Capon’s favorite is police positive, official police is Not a police positive, the entire frame is significantly larger. The official police was once called Army Special

Sir, the Army Special is the predecessor to the Official Police. Name change from Army Special to Official Police happened in 1928. Same gun just different name. The Police Positive and Police Positive Special are small frame revolvers whereas the larger Army Special & Official Police are medium frame size. Different animals in other words. Police Positive shot a .32 and .38 S&W not .38 Special The Police Positive Special was chambered in .38 Special and .32-20 calibers. Thanks for your video on a "classic" six-gun. The Border Patrol issue was marked on the barrel (left-side) and was the same gun as the Official Police save the name. Check out the Colt Forum to enhance your knowledge on the Colt Official Police and other fine Colt arms.

I don't know. The barrel looks too small to be a U.S.B.P. issue Colt. When I EOD'd (entered on duty) in the Patrol in 1969 we were either issued a Smith & Wesson Heavy Barrel Military and Police (later became the model 10 heavy barrel) or a Colt Official Police heavy barrel. The initials U.S.B.P. were stamped into the back strap of the Colt. Perhaps the one shown was issued prior.

Yeah, as someone else pointed out, the Border Patrol editions were modified with a heavier non-tapered barrel which yours doesn't appear to have.

Yes, my observation as well. One half of each class received the Colt and one half a Smith &Wesson heavy barrel M&P.

I think the Border Patrol guns had heavy barrels and serial numbers were up in the 800,000s.

Also, according to one of my references, yours was manufactured in 1944 and I think the BP models were made in 1952.

The detective specials had much shorter barrels. It looks like a Official Police. I just got one yesterday

Where to start? That revolver looks refinished .Look at how the markings have been washed out.The wood grips you speak of are plastic. The gun that you said was AI Capone's isn't even the same one as the one you're holding. Two totally different frame sizes and models. The Colt Official Police revolvers had to compete with Smith and Wesson Military and Police models, who were direct competition for them in civilian and police circles. The Smith and Wesson revolvers were much more popular and issued in much greater numbers than any of these Colts by the US Armed 4:45 Forces.

I think the Border Patrol guns had heavy barrels and serial numbers higher than yours. You still have a nice gun.
