- Real Estate - Atlantic City and Beach Comber - UC Berkeley, Live, 4-12-14, 1st row, Cal Day ‘14, Memorial Glade. Alex Bleeker: "You know what happens in Berkeley when you hop fences dude... incite a riot" :P
Other Tidbits:
The area surrounding the steps to the Doe Library were in fact fenced off before everybody jumped the barricades before the second to the last song. However, because we were now so close to the band, Martin Courtney's forward facing speaker was now behind us, which is why his vocals are so hard to hear. 'Beach Comber' actually works quite well as an instrumental, though, especially with that extended jam session in the middle of it..
This was a free show put on by the student union program 'Superb' as a part of Cal Day, an official open house to show current and prospective students what UC Berkeley has to offer.
Despite being warm and sunny most of the day, by 4pm the weather turned cloudy and cool, which is why the band elected for jackets. They weren't wearing them during their sound check.
And once again, bassist Alex Bleeker expressed his fondness for the Bay Area and how they like playing here. He said the same thing a month earlier at the Noise Pop Festival in San Francisco when they played a back-to-back show at the Independent. So I guess he's not joking! lol

The drummer lays down such a nice, soft touch groove.
Dude... my son moves in as a freshman at Cal mañana... we had to miss Cal Day due to Science Olympiad competition... had I known Real Estate was going to play the library steps... man... I'd have BEEN THERE!
If this video ever gets removed I will be devastated
Me too. I listen to this version more than the studio version.
Always love matt's delay/reverb
Hahaaa! At the beggining they were like going to play Crazy Train!! Very funny for a band like them.
GOAT Admiral, did you record any other songs from this set? Either way, thank you so much for this. Shame Matt isn't on the band anymore, love his guitar work.
I can't tell if the weather is cold or warm in this video. :O
hctr brv I see what you’re laying down there...
Mark Twain once said of the San Francisco Bay Area: "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco."
Berkeley has a coastal Mediterranean climate so the weather doesn't really change all that much with the seasons; it's basically cool, 60-70 degrees all year round.
It’s the best weather ever, light jacket weather for sure
Just some dudes jamminn
matts guitar playing sounds more ambient these days than the beachy ish sound from before! its probably the melody maker instead of the jazzmaster....
+winstor adams hey! do you know other cool music like this that is similar?
Austin Duran Martin Courtneys new solo album. Also, Ducktails is great. I dont know any other band that sound like real estate, really. Theres a band called "light heat" and they have an album here on youtube. give it a listen! its really good.
+Austin Duran Beach Fossils sounds very similar to real estate, check them out!
im familiar with that band
got anything else?
Austin Duran light heat
Does anybody know how Matt gets that type of sound on his guitar? Is it a type of pedal? Or perhaps his guitar and amp settings? I'm new to guitar gear and I've always wanted to get a reverby/delay type of sound like that.
I still would like to know too!
Sounds like a combination of spring reverb and a slap-back delay..
When the swirling sound starts around 6:35, he engaged a phaser. He's known to use a Moog 12 stage phaser, DOD phasor 201 reissue, and an MXR phase 90.
Your guess is as good as mine as to which one he's using here, but hopefully this helps. ✌
@@Wassab_4u Thanks for the feedback! Yeah back at that time when I wrote this I didn't know it was the phaser making the sound I was trying to describe. It's a nice touch.
the girl dancing off to the right, dances like an NPC
Lol is that LinusTechTips on the right side? XD
Bfsy
Rachet at far right.
My daily jam. I love how instrumental 'Beach Comber' sounds.
Bassist is seriously happy to have that Ampeg Fridge pumping loud volume behind him .
Id lay down my groove LOUD if i had that rig!
@@notahamster333 no doubt :D
