  • Is Merida, Mexico too expensive? I see so many people saying that this city is no longer the great place to retire to for expats? I disagree, and this video explains why!

    What's your opinion on the on the increase in cost in Merida, and Yucatan overall?

    • @luiscarlosgcanton7651
      @luiscarlosgcanton7651 Рік тому

      Yes prices have increased with the influx of international immigrants and also nationals moving into Merida. If you stick to consume in the businessess owned by foreginers or their rentals, you will find it way more expensive that if you deal with locals ( well there are exceptions with locals also, but mostly is the foreigners set prices similar to US, Canada, Europe, etc). Certain things are imports and will be more expensive, no matter if you purchase from locals or foreigners.

      Been to Merida once only and a short time we usually go to Playa del Carmen and thing getting more expensive but like you said I’m in Phoenix Az. So whatever is expensive in Playa Tulum and Merida relevant to were I live it’s not expensive.
      And the expensive item alcohol we don’t drink for us is not expensive going out to eat

    Glad we bought our first property in 2016 and bought another and moved as permanent residents in 2018 when it was more affordable. Prices have gone up worldwide but we live well in Merida. No more high taxes, mortgages or debt. What a liberation from tyranny of debt in the US.

    • @AlexanderFromKC

      Definitely more affordable, but like you said, I think that could be said from almost everywhere in our world. That's awesome that you've freed yourself from all of that - can't wait to join you in that!!

    In the 3 years we've been coming to Merida prices have gone up, but not nearly like in US. I bought a dozen medium eggs for 1.80 USD this week while in Vancouver WA they're about 7.00 USD if you can even find them. We still find groceries 66 percent cheaper. And the large restored house we just bought cost a fraction of the small house we have in Vancouver now We can live on my social security with a lot left to travel.

      Exactly! This is what I'm talking about. I know that prices have increased, but at this point it's global. Thank you so much for you comment!

    Great Video. I think many do not realize inflation is Global. Its easier just to play the blame game than to watch the news....
    I like the fact that you confront Facebook groups that discuss and complain on cost of living often. I find people think the rules do not apply to Merida that apply to the rest of the world. There will be expensive and then affordable parts of the city. Inflation will affect Merida just like the rest of the world.
    And the options to spend more money in Merida is expanding. Merida use to be so much cheaper because of the lack of high-end restaurants, boutique stores, luxury items, etc.... Luxury is arriving to Merida. Does not mean you can't find cheap tacos, local produce etc... That affordability is still here and it is not going away any time soon!

      I completely agree with every point, and also it's so awesome to see you comment on one of my videos! I always tell people that Elizabeth was our main point of contact (agent), but that you were one the other side and I recommend you 100%. Hope everything is well down there, and I'd love to get together at some point for a video.
      Thanks Nicholas, and all the best.

      Agree. Before the inflation we made a trip and I remember eating at a Brazilian Steakhouse all you can eat in Merida and it was 16 usd per person. Later trip it jumped to 20 per. BUT, in Atlanta suburbs same period it jumped from 49 to 62 per. Inflation is everywhere. But relatively Merida is way less cost than USA. In case of my B Steakhouse example, 1/3 the cost. Things for services are way less. I had a pool built in my place by the beach at a fraction of the cost it would be anywhere in USA. Just had a great barber come to my house and he does a great haircut for 200 pesos like 10 usd and in USA I pay 24 now after tip at chain hair place and I have to drive there, wait turn, etc. Other expats pay 5, but this guy comes to my house. Just put solar panels in for at least half of what states would be and maybe 1/3 cost. I know I pay for more electronics, but not that much more and tax is included. I was pricing a mesh wifi system and amazon MX was 263 and US Amazon with tax of 6% it was 244. So a $19 difference I can live with. I find stuff like appliances just a little more. My property tax for the year was < 21.00 usd for 3 br 3 bath 14 minute walk from beach place. Since I am not a MX citizen but only resident, I have to pay a 550 annual trust fee to own property, but that 571 compared to what my prop tax in USA for a place by the beach OR anywhere would be is an example of why living here has and probably will for a while have advantages relatively speaking. I just hope the US Dollar stays closer to 20 per MX.

    We live in Merida, and moved here in September 2022. Prices have continued to climb since we moved here, but food prices haven't gone up nearly as much as they have in the US. The last condo in our privida is going for about 100K pesos more than ours did. What's really hurt though is the exchange rate. That's a bigger chunk out of our income than inflation. When we moved here it was usually right around 19/20+ pesos to the dollar, but now it's dipping into the high 17's. That really hurt a lot of people that hadn't converted to pesos before their house sale. We lost about 5 grand just from playing roulette with the exchange rate. That said, we love it here. All in every month our expenses are about 1200 US versus about 5K US in Colorado. We're never going back, I like being able to go shopping without getting shot.

      I've heard about this, but you put it better than I could have, Joseph. We dealt with our prices going up thanks to the exchange rate during our build. It's a rough lesson to learn! I'm glad you're enjoying it down there, I can't wait to be there full-time as well!

    Great video! How are the schools and how walkable is the city? I'd love to ditch the car?

    • @AlexanderFromKC
      @AlexanderFromKC  Рік тому +1

      The city is incredibly walkable, depending on the area where you live. The historic center is almost ludicrously walkable. Our house is right next to markets, grocery stores, restaurants, bars, and only about a 15-20 minute walk to Plaza Grande or Paseo de Montejo. There are areas that are closer, but we found the right place for us was just a bit further out. Up north, not as walkable, but an Uber costs VERY little so ditching the car would be easy.
      With regard to the schools, I have to say I don't know. There is one north of the city call the Madison School that I've heard great things about, but I could never get them to contact me so I'm not sure. Other expat groups have mentioned a few others that are good, and then of course many expats homeschool their children. Which is something I appreciate, but could not do lol!

    I must say, living as a local, it is obviously cheaper. But having a US lifestyle in Merida is not dramatically cheaper. You can live cheaply if you adapt to local ways of life, live in the east, south or west...give up a car...but comforts from the US are similar in price.

    • @AlexanderFromKC
      @AlexanderFromKC  Рік тому

      I agree. It's easy to spend a lot of money, but it's all relative. Going to Crabster at Paseo 60 is expensive, but similar meals even in Kansas City would be significantly more expensive. That being said, if you eat there every night you're not saving money compared to just your regular eat at home and at less expensive places in the US.

      Yes and no, in my opinion. I think the higher-end prices and going crazy, but if you're looking for long-term rent you kind find very reasonable prices.

    We are on our way to Merida this year to check it out, if we can cope with the heat and if we feel at home we will stay, we are escaping Socialist Europe, but it seems Merida is going through a Real Estate bubble, just like the rest of the world 🌎

    • @AlexanderFromKC
      @AlexanderFromKC  Рік тому +1

      You'll have fun, I'm sure. The heat is crazy, but it's easy to live with, in my opinion. Merida's definitely seeing some increased prices with regard to real estate, but overall you'll definitely see a decrease in costs - especially coming from Europe.
