Fun fact: the 'book date' intro started as a 5 second joke that just snowballed out of control.
I ended up spending hours practicing a french accent, filming a longer, sillier montage, and even composing and recording the music for that segment. 🤣 The whole video got delayed two full days just for the intro skit! (the original montage was going to have a wedding...then some very 'suggestive' page turning...🤭)
Still the most fun I've had on this channel!

I have a confession to make… I am addicted to reading. Sometimes I have to remember to slowdown and savor the book. That said, I appreciate being told it’s ok to reread. Earlier this year I re read one of my favorite books and fell in love with it all over again❤

I visit my local library every week, and every time I become anxious about how many books there are that I do not have time to read. I have to save time for writing too. Every time in the library, my TBR grows but lifetimes shortens.
But I am inclined to agree with a professor who is quite famous in my home country. He said on a lecture that having too many good books is a good thing, because it would be much more depressing to finish a book and say: 'So, that was the last book that was worth reading.'
(Unfortunately, said professor, Jaakko Hämeen-Anttila, passed away last year, and I heard he left behind unfinished book projects. I am sure they would have been worth writing and reading.)

So glad you mentioned reading not to impress others. I’m so sick of seeing massive book hauls, I always think there’s no way anyone can read all those books and get full enjoyment out of them. Buying massive amount of books to cram into bookshelves and not really reading them properly. Go to the library and borrow them, booktok is becoming the fast fashion of books. So many resources go into creating books and I just feel sad about all the books going to waste. I also don’t like the special editions and painted edges trend etc, it’s ridiculous to me 👍🙏

Got back into reading a few months ago from a movie. Dune part 2, enjoyed it so much I bought the first three and am half way through the second. Want to stick with it as I am addicted to gaming which tends to push reading to the side.

I recently dated a guy who read to impress. He could get through a lengthy book in a week, which was impressive. I don’t read that way. When I find a book I can invest myself in, I want to savor it and take my time. Anyway, work got crazy and I wasn’t able to read for several weeks. He kept asking me (daily) how much I’d read, to which I had to reply ‘nothing.’ It made reading feel like a homework assignment I hadn’t completed and I was clearly lagging behind the class. When I finally found some time to get in a few chapters, he laughed as if he didn’t believe it. Needless to say, we didn’t last long. Don’t let other people use you to prop up their self esteem.

...do you want to DM me this guys address? 😉
That really sucks, and I'm sorry you put up with that. Everyone reads differently and there's never a good reason to 'weaponise' reading against someone. I hope you read at your own rate now.
For what it's worth, I'm ''The Book Guy' yet I have reading highs and lows. It's not a race, and certainly not a competition.

The relationship between guilt around reading habits and FOMOOB is hitting me hard lately 😅
Some thoughts on not reading to impress people : it's such a hard habit to get out of, and it can be really hard to recognize you're doing it in the first place if you've grown up with a lot of judgment around "good/worthwhile books". I'm constantly questioning whether my desire to read a bunch of classics is actually my desire, and so far my strategy to avoid getting too in my head over it is just to dnf if I'm not enjoying it by like a quarter of the way through

Great video! I needed this video this week. I just finished a long book and found myself in a reading lull. Now I feel motivated to just pick up a book I want to read and not worry about how many books I still need to read this year and all that jazz. Thanks, man!

Man, you make my day just by watching your videos! I don't usually have the time or the energy to comment on them, but boy do you deserve it!
Your attitude is amazing and your enthousiasm over things - not always only books - is over the top. And it's catching! It's also very relieving when we get to hear you saying things we sometimes already know, but you fit them all so well together, they make a bunch that makes sense and we're feeling like... "wait a moment, it doesn't take magic to do that... he's right!" Your videos always feel cohesive and well thought throught.
In any way, all I'm trying to say is, you're truly inspiring, you cheer us up and you motivate us! To read and not only!
    Thank you sir!

I've recently struggled with reading and critically assessing the work as I go, which sucks the joy out of the experience. My friend recommended and lent me her copy of the Fourth Wing. Now I wasn't sure it would be my stuff as she usually reads romance and I tend to read anything but. I really wasn't into it at the beginning but I found your video on the book and decided to stick with it. I really ended up enjoying it and just having fun reading for the first time in months, especially with the second book Iron Flame (read the whole thing in two days!). Your videos have helped not take everything too seriously. Lots of love!

As much as I try to read, even then my maximum goal is no more than 2 a month and getting any further beyond that, I can't even imagine. Big books already look intimidating and the risk of burnout already feels omnipresent.

This was excellent and I agree with it all! I had a reading disorder that wasn’t discovered until 4th grade and it was basically I could read, and read fast, but I was comprehending absolutely none of it. I remember this, I would go to answer the questions after reading a paragraph and be like, ummmm, huh? 😂 My Dad was my principal (I know I know 😒) and he got me into this intensive summer reading thing with a specialized teacher and by the time I started 5th grade the problem was not only gone but I was reading books at an alarming rate. My little local library in my small Oklahoma, USA town couldn’t keep up and was ordering books in for me. But I have never forgotten that feeling of helplessness I felt after reading a paragraph and knowing absolutely nothing. It is what fuels my reading passion to this day. So a negative turned positive caught and corrected by some very remarkable teachers! T ✌🏻

Sometimes it feels so right to spend hours on just couple of pages. The world itself is not there and one - completely immersed in the bright flames of imagination, fueled by mere ink stains ❤❤❤
Only one thing i slightly disagree - it is not "fun" that is what fuels this flames - it is "amusement" - sometimes it is amazing and fulfilling to read painful books that brought a hailstorm of sorrow upon my shaky soul.
But so so liked the tip - read some childrens books🙏a minor fetish of mine is finding brilliant, unusual "fairy tales" - while lacking on plot intricacies and sublime prose - quite often such stories may blow one's imagination without any warning (and more often than not lead one to explore culture far from one's "bubble")
Anyway great channel and keep on mate - one would be fool to think you didn't make the world a bit better:)

I have over 500 books on my TBR!!!! Sometimes when I’m in a crazed mood I want to read everything at once. I fell into the trap of how many books I could read in a year. But I have realized that my priority is to enjoy what I am reading currently. I picked up Fourth Wing last year because a family member recommended it. I read the bad reviews that were trending. It seems a popular thing to do to jump on the bandwagon of Fourth Wing haters. Anyhow I went into the book feeling like I wouldn’t like it and that according to popular opinion I shouldn’t like it either. I loved it and couldn’t read it fast enough! I don’t care if others liked it because I was completely immersed in the story. That is why I read! To be taken away to a different world. I enjoy sharing my passion for reading with other avid readers. I don’t care if you like the same books but that you love reading.

Awesome video! Can’t agree more, reading should be fun, not stress. For me setting goals work but I set very realistic goals, some people can read so fast or 100+ books a year. I know I don’t (maybe one day), I read slow (which is fine) and set my goals accordingly, also I’m fine if I can’t make my goals 😊.
Anyway you read or want to read is valid 😊.

My advice is don't try to read fast because you think you need to. I speed read Nana by Émile Zola in about 5 hours for a class once, and I have nooooooo clue what that novel is about, other than it being about a woman named Nana...
If it takes you a whole year to finish one book, then be proud of that; you read a book.

JK. I enjoyed it! Your videos are not just filled with valuable content but you also make them hilarious and, as a spectator, I am always eager to keep watching.
I relate to most of the topics you discussed. Not too long ago, I started to develop the love for reading... but work, school, and adult life in general make it harder to enjoy. My first language is Spanish, so to keep learning English and expanding my vocabulary I started to read for pleasure. It's hard not to compare myself to a few friends who can finish a book in like a day or two lol, that's my personal guilt you were talking about! But I do not want to put myself under pressure, I want to keep enjoying reading.
