I've had these paints for a while, but hadn't used them yet. I decided to experiment a bit to see what they are capable of. I've seen @RinskeDouna use them in Dutch Pours with very interesting and beautiful results. So I know they work best on darker backgrounds. And I know they work well at a thin consistency. So let's do a swipe experiment!
Here are my Keys to Success for an thin consistency Swipe:
1. The consistency of my paints is thin enough that it does not leave a trace or a mound when drizzled off of the stir stick.
2. For this piece, I decided to lay down a full base coat, and use that same color to swipe over the other colors.
3. I cut 4 pieces of paper towel into strips. I prefer to swipe with the side that has the perforated edge because I like the texture it creates. If you want a cleaner look, use the edge that you've cut so that it's smooth.
4. Dampen the paper towel edge that you will be swiping with. I use a spray bottle filled with distilled water. Just damp - not dripping wet!
5. I swiped two different ways in this video: the first is by dipping my damp paper towel directly into the base coat and swiping over the poured colors. The second is dipping my damp paper towel into the cup of base color on the side, and using that to swipe over the poured colors. Both are great, but I find the second way produces a few more cells, if that's what you want.
6. Keep the paper towel as vertical as possible while you're swiping. You want to swipe one color over the others. You do not want to swipe all of the colors at once.
7. MOST IMPORTANT - SLOW DOWN! If you think you are swiping slowly enough - slow down even more. Haha! Swiping too fast can leave gaps or skips and odd distortions, and can create large air bubbles that may ruin your composition.
8. Also very important - make sure it is 100% level wherever you place it. These are very fluid paints and can shift while drying.
Colors Used:
Amsterdam Prussian Blue Phthalo
Amsterdam Pearl Green
Amsterdam Pearl Blue
Amsterdam Pearl Violet
My pouring medium is equal parts Floetrol and GAC800.
My paints are mixed 3 parts pouring medium to 1 part paint, and then I add small amounts of distilled water until I reach the desired consistency.
Thanks again for stopping by - I hope to see you here again soon!

This really looks like the aurora borealis!. Nice job. Another one I'll have to try
I love swiping. It’s very thoughtful and meditative. You have to be methodical and slow. A nice change of pace 😎
Fantastic!! You opened up a few doors for me now as I just rec'd my pearls from Amsterdam! I LOVED what you did here! The shiftiness of the colours on that beautiful prussian blue background simply rocks!!
Beautiful colors... Whites are my favorite
thanks Leslie!
Great idea, looks like snow covered mountains with northern lights
YES! That's exactly what I see LZ! Thanks again
That’s gorgeous! 😃
I love it Nate, Thank you for sharing..
So pretty
Love this. Definitely a mountain. Or a frozen bubble wall. Dried results are fantastic, it dies glow. I think an intentional shift would be cool as well.
Thanks Bobbie! Yes, next time I won't swipe in such straight lines. I like the wobble or wavy lines from the shifting too. But when I'm experimenting, I usually stick to a fairly simple design so the results are predictable and measurable.
Love this one Nate! Love from NB Canada!
Great swipe and I love the title. Those pearl paints are just fantastic. I like that the swipe is not just straight across the middle. Thanks so much.
Thanks Claudia!
Beautiful piece. Your swipes are so steady and straight.
Thanks SJ! Swiping smooth and suuuuuuper slow is the key for me
This is so, so pretty! Really stunning!! The colors look wonderful and I love your composition. So simple and yet so striking. Truly a statement piece. Thanks for sharing. Be well.❤️
Thanks Linda! I'll be posting my next experiment in this series on Tuesday I believe - I hope you like it too!
Hi Nate, these colours are lush! It reminds me of a centipede crawling over decking, but very posh decking. I love it. Thanks again for your time, I learn something more with every video. I can imagine what it would be like with a coat of resin. Love to you and hubby xx
Hi Linny! Yes, I can definitely see the centipede now too. Interesting idea about the resin...
Beautiful! 💙😍 I just received my DecoArt order - Enchanted series, blue, turquoise, green, magenta & gold. Also bought their special Ultra Black Basecoat. I'm ecstatic with all the possibilities! 🤯
Thanks for sharing your time and talent.🤗 🙌 ✌🤟 😁
Thanks Willa! I haven’t tried the Enchanted paints yet but I think they will react similarly. Have fun!
Simple but beautiful 😍
Thank you Becky! 😊 I like simple sometimes
Very beautiful Nate...I love it!!!
Thanks Evie!
This one is so beautiful Nate! I love the technique you used. I can hardly wait to see what you have in your head for the next one!!! 🤗🥰💜
Hahaha! thanks Gayle! Just about to do the next test... should be posted next week!
Stunning!
thanks Judy!
Very cool loved the colours and the explanation plus the music was groovy
Thanks so much Navor! I have fun picking the music for my videos too
Beautiful work Nate....I love it 💙💙💙💙
thanks Camile! Let's try to connect at the end of May when I'm in Toronto! Meet for lunch or something at least
Intriguing! And what a fabulous title!!
Thanks! Do you name your pieces Holly? I like to find the right title... part of the art for me. But not everyone does
Very beautiful
Thank you Kelly!
So pretty Nate 😍😍
Thanks Kay!
I really love this, the colors are awesome
Thanks Tina!
Simple and beautiful. The wet result is amazing 💜💙💚
thanks Janja! Have you tried the Amsterdam Pearl colors yet? I'm interested in hearing what others have done with them.
@@NateBrightArt I have already done two paintings with pearl white Amsterdam. I was doing dutch pour. Once angel wings for my friend and once on a dark blue background. The order, however, I pour just by feeling.
Beautiful swipe Nate! I love the richness of the green and blues! 🤩💕
thanks Lance! You should give these paints a try too. I know you don't normally work with darker backgrounds, but I find this fascinating.
I really like this! ❤️
Thanks Christy!
Very pretty, Nate. Love that you didn't put your paint in a straight line across the middle. xoxo
Thanks Stephanie! I love a good wavy line. Haha
Wonderful
Thanks Christine!
The swipe is beautiful and I loved the colors. And they show their colors changes really well. But I liked the design of the painting most of all. Great design Nate. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks Jane!
Very cool!
Thanks so much!
So pretty! I almost bought some of those last night. Now I wish I had. Thanks Nate!
Thanks Paula! Awww that's a shame! hopefully next time you hit up the art supply store, you remember to pick some up! Would love to see what you do with them
Yeeeeeeeesss🥰😍😍😍
Thanks Rinske! I'll be posting the open cup I did with these pearl paints soon... and it's AMAZING! Thanks for the inspiration
Very cool! Thanks for sharing
Thanks Amy!
Loved this swipe great colors Nate
Thanks Deidre! Have you tried these Amsterdam Pearl paints yet?
Not yet but they look amazing I am going to try them
Trees and Northern Lights too
Hi Nikki! Yes, I totally see that too!
Love it Nate. I do have and have used the Amsterdam pearl paints and they are beautiful.
Thank you so much! That's great that you've used these paints before... what technique did you use? I was wondering if they could be used in a thin consistency straight pour... my feel is that they will work best for fluid art in a thin consistency, but I suppose I'll need to test that theory too. But interested to hear your experience!
Hi Nate. This was such a great test. You are the master of swiping. 🥰 beautiful
Haha! Thanks Lori! I find swiping meditative. You have to be slow and precise and let the paint do its thing. The perfect mix of planning, preparation and release. Works both sides of my brain, which I love.
@@NateBrightArt Ya know funny thing when I swipe I move very fast on most because I am trying to create a chaos background for my flowers, so I need to try this form as well -thanks for being so welcoming - I feel so honored to be on this train
Hi Nate. Love watching you create. I am looking forward to your helping me do a painting for "our forever home" once Thomas and I are moved in.
I would love to do that with you Carol!
Hi Nate beautiful thx 😊
Thanks Angela!
Love the concept and result. Has inspired me to do similar with an idea I now have in my mind
thanks Kerrie! What an amazing compliment! Nothing is better than being told you have inspired someone to try something new. Would love to know how it works out for you!
@@NateBrightArt will be sure to show you when the time comes. Getting ready for a much needed holiday at the moment so not much painting getting done but am sure as soon as I get back I will be back at it, experimenting and drawing on the inspiration I get from time away in tropical Queensland paradise.
Very COOL and gorgeous. I was thinking of a swipe with those paints but not exactly how you did it. This is so cool.
Joanne! You should totally do a bloom with these paints! OMG!! A dark background with these as a cell activator... BOOM! You'll blow minds
@@NateBrightArt Rinske has done large blooms but I don’t think anyone has done small.
@@joanneralstinart5735 yes, but she did dutch pour blooms, not Shellee Art style Blooms!
Nate, that is so cool. Amazing how something so simplistic can be so awesome. I think it would be cool to use something like this as a background wth embellishments of some kind after it has dried. I am thinking a full moon with night flowers and fireflies. Ohhh I want to try this idea now. What do you think Nate? 💜🤗💜
Hi Joalla! that's a fantastic idea! You should definitely do that and show me! I have some commission pieces to work on next, but I think next time I can experiment further, I think I'll do a city-scape swipe on one side with white and silver and blues, and a ghostly reflection with the Amsterdam Pearls on the other. Does that make sense? Not sure if I explained that well.
@@NateBrightArt that sounds awesome Nate. I can fully see it. Looking forward to watching you put it together.
Very impressive and stunning work! Enjoyed watching the whole process great technique and beautiful colour palette 🎨! Wish you all great success and best wishes!
This turned out great!! I love how soft it is. 💙💜💙
thanks Kim! Yes, definitely a soft glow. Very interesting!
Just beautiful! I just got my Amsterdam pearls so this is on my to-do list today! I do have a question...did you use any silicone?
Thanks so much! Nope - no silicone at all
I think the painting only benefits from your unleveled table 😊
I have some pearl paints, so definitely want to try this! Are those frogs in the background in lovely Costa Rica?
Hi Kathryn! Yes - you're likely to hear tree frogs, toads, crickets, cicadas, geckos and all kinds of creatures in my videos... I usually paint and film at night, and the jungle is ALWAYS noisy! Haha
I meant swipes LOL
I'm glad you corrected that... sounded a little racist. HAHAHA. Thanks again Leslie!
Very cool!
Thanks so much Linda!
