    Great vid as always, Ben! Being a recent Tornado of Souls solo student, who worked on improving my playing of if for two or more years, I tried all kinds of things to get that fast two-string arpeggio and stretch segment down. Right-hand technique wise. the pick slanting method was a massive help for getting up to speed. Left-hand wise, I learned to avoid the palm parallel with the neck and fingers fanned approach for the massive 10th to 17th fret stretch, because when the pinkie finger stretched from G to A on the high-E, it would cause my middle finger to stretch beyond the B note of the B string. Instead, I plant my index finger right over the D note of the high E, where the first digit of my finger is hooked to the neck, and the top of that finger extends as far up to the D note's fret-wire as possible while still maintaining a clear ringing note. I also plant my thumb in such a way that there is a very stable hold between my thumb and index finger. The thumb and index serve as two posts that never move position during the whole of that starting B arpeggio sequence. Gear-wise I learned some things that may help for smaller handed folks. Many shred guitars are 25.5 scale length, but the more Gibson centric scale length is 24.75. Having a shorter scale length does mean for less of a stretch. Epiphone's Prophecy 24 fret guitars use that shorter scale length. PRS 24-fret guitars also use a 25 inch length. Lastly, I notice when playing a string gauge lighter than 10, say 9, I notice it's easier to fast pick between strings. I believe both Epiphone Prophecy and PRS SE guitars are standard with 9's. I learned on the PRS but now can do it on a 25.5 just fine. Though be warned with most PRS guitars the fretboard radius is more rounded than most modern shred guitars.

    Hey Uncle Ben! I’ve been on a Nuno kick recently and was wondering if you could do a video on the solo for Pornograffitti by Extreme. That song has so much interesting stuff in it! If you have the time for it, that would be awesome!

    Interesting that you talk about the flipper hand technique being bad for right hand muting. In his Beato interview he said he developed that because he likes the noise and doesn’t like muting.

    I have a question about right hand- are everyone's hands so different? If i try to hold a hand like you (not touching a body or pickguard with fingers) i find it impossible to play normally - i can kinda play 2 highest string and descending to low E i find it absolutely impossible to play down slant picking style. So i have to rest my fingers on the body/pickguard. Other thing that i noticed it's that if i'm playing medium to fast only single high e string i have to use whole wrist movements. On all other string is mostly index+thumb + wrist.

      Oh yeah man there’s so many different approaches. I’ve got a GREAT video on that topic coming next week, stay tuned and GET INTO IT!

    Michael Angelo uses the same aggressive picking to overcome noise. He doesn't mute at all.

    Sounds great good tips. So I'm having trouble with something that kind of pertains to parts of this video.. but I'm not sure if you touch on this genera... but there are parts of Rainbows " Man on the silver mountain ". The part where Roni is singing.. " Come down with fire, lift my spirit higer... someone's screaming my name... come and make me Holy again."
    Anyways the part that Richie is playing over it... is tough.. all the tabs I've seen sound right... I can hear it... but I can get the turn around like he does, unless I sweep it but then I'm off time... so I don't know if it's a picking technique or if his turn around are that tough... and he's not playing that fast... but to get my fingers on my left hand to do what the tabs say is tough... just curious if you could run through just that little corus part... it's a cool tune.

    I always wondered how he muted strings with that ham-fisted aproach (: One thing that will make you pick faster is less wrist movement (lock your wrist) and move from your elbow (it sounds back ass-ward) but it actually works.

    • @C_mao
      @C_mao 6 місяців тому +1

      ...if you're locking your wrist too hard tho, you won't be relaxed , so just work with it till it comes naturally

    Is Marty not happy unless he makes it extra hard for himself? I wasn't that familiar with him so when I got into his playing recently I was shocked at his position and just couldn't understand how he muted the strings. But this is fascinating. Of course you can make the noise quiter but with a louder signal you still get good signal to noise ratio. Maybe that's part of his tone but I'm not learning his "muting" technique. I've been trying to clean up my picking and it's a huge mess, but now I know why I keep tripping up, I don't alternate pick properly and sometimes don't use economy when I should like this example. It's so hard to get rid of bad habits after 20 years. I did the "Englishman drinking tea pinky thing" but I finally managed to tame that abd suddenly my pinky is more useful and I don't cramp up constantly. But thumb position and paying attention to my picking is really hard to relearn. I finally got up to shredding speed (thanks Uncle Ben!) but now I keep tripping up because of my aweful alternate picking technique, which didn't matter at lower speed. But at high speed suddenly all those little bad habits add up and my speed is gone again until I religiously focus on exactly what I'm doing. These tips are invaluable, I feel like it's kinda similar to that arpeggio part in Rising Force, I'd like to try that. Can you give it a try or is Yngwie still copyrighting every video that even mentions him?...

    My understanding is that Marty holds his hand like that so that it *doesn’t* bump into the lower strings and cause noise. That being said I wouldn’t advise doing it his way either lol.
