Yes. And public outcry. It's so important to speak out. On Friday I'm going to a training to learning how to register voters and then doing canvasing. It's a great way to meet local people and help get out the vote!
MountainMan23 great, can they get the other polling places Republicans closed in NC, Florida, Texas, Arizona and many other states over the years to open up?
It's the complete lack of shame of GOP politicians and operatives as they dismantle democracy that really gets at me. What degree of cognitive dissonance does someone need to have to keep voting for these lowlives? Please, please US, get out in droves in November and VOTE THEM OUT!
onlyfacts How dare the dnc not declare Bernie the winner just because he lost by over 3 million votes. Bernie with his parroting of Trump and his Putin connect senior adviser carried white states that did not vote but ruled by caucuses of white people. Now I know that you Bernie potheads wanted a Republican controlled parrot and Putin puppet but real dems did not. As a long time socialist I would NEVER vote for a fake Dem or fake socialist like Bernie. Now like Trump you Bernie bots are claiming that Bernie was cheated. You just can't drop the Trump act.
+ Amelia It isn't cognitive dissonance. It is party loyalty. No matter how poorly your team is doing, whether it is sports or politics, few want to abandon their team.
AmeliaAlastairMoon GOP voters are enemies of the country. We need to increase minority turnout and shut the GOP out of power. No more cooperation, pack the courts, prosecute them for any crimes we can dig up, harass them 24/7 whenever they do take a seat.
One of the issues is HOW? If there are only 2 polls within your county, how can you fit driving, waiting in insanely long voting lines, and drive back to work within the hour you're allowed to in and vote and not risk losing your job?
Fun Fact: The job approval of US Congress has always been about 10% to 20% ( it's 17% in a recent poll. ) yet every time about 90% of them will get re-elected.
Savannah Simpson I think that's the disconnect. People tend to like their person but hate the dysfunction of Congress not realizing that their person perpetuates the dysfunction. If people want Congress to work across the aisle to solve big problems, then they should elect people who are willing to do so.
An Old Knight of the Dented Order I think paying them less would cause more corruption and paying based on their performance (which is subjective) would incentivize their votes. However, we could mandate people in Congress have town halls to answer for their actions. Or change term limits and term length. The founders created a solid blueprint, but maybe it's time for some fine tuning.
Elephants are also matriarchal which is majorly at odds with the massive tranche of middle aged men who currently occupy the gop and who are blatantly attempting (and in many cases succeeding) to curtail the rights of women.
We have the rule of law and guaranteed civil rights; stop engaging in a tired apologetic for unscrupulous Republicans subverting representative government.
Mohammed Ismail Look like you're speaking from experience. How many times you've dropped that soap, boy? You probably grown to like it as well, you little perv.
America is certainly not democratic. Every one of my votes for president over the last 20 years has been converted to a Republican vote by the Electoral Congress. In a democracy, my vote would actually count.
well it's totally our fault for thinking we don't need to go vote and believing the other side would play fair. we deserve it for taking our right to vote for granted and thinking nothing will affect us.
The point of the video is that because of judicial rigging and gerrymandering a single Republican's vote is worth more than a single Democrat's vote. If you listened carefully Democrats beat republicans last midterm election by over 1 million votes and still managed to lose 30 seats.
No, the Russian interference was all about sowing disinformation and getting voters to become apathetic. And that apathy was partially fueled by a lack of enthusiasm for Clinton and, most importantly, figuring that there was *no way* she could lose to someone like Trump.
I know what you're referring to - the hacking wasn't successful against the electoral systems, but their hacking of the DNC led to a GOP victory, in part because they got analytics from the Clinton campaign that gave the Trump campaign inside-info about where she was *not* targeting. There's a subtle-but-substantial difference between that and hacking electoral systems.
But I Pokemon went to the polls in 2016 and Pokemon Go’d. I think we’re gonna need to look a few more places for some more voters. Pokemon take a friend who didn’t vote in 2016 to go vote with you?
That is excellent advice to your fellow citizens. Sadly I'm just a sympathetic (and fearful, to be honest) onlooker. And even I've known about gerrymandering and voter suppression for years now.
Don't forget all the peaches, pecans, and peanuts. I love eating peach cobbler for dessert, pecan pie is a must have at Thanksgiving dinner in my family, and I enjoy eating toast covered in peanut butter for breakfast. Plus, I enjoy eating peanut butter cookies with my coffee.
My Republican rep was outvoted over 2 to 1 in my city (Columbus), but I looked at the gerrymandered map of my district: Columbus is split in half (north-south) and I'm voting against Republican majority votes in 5 other counties. How is a democrat supposed to win that seat? It's basically impossible.
The Carolina's are that heavily gerrymandered and they're about to get hit by a hurricane that looks to be a record breaker? Does that qualify as divine providence?
At 2:37, "…placed Buffy villain, Neil Gorsuch, on the Supreme Court…" Sam, I've fallen in love with you all over again. My knees tremble and my heart flutters at your Buffy references, as that is the way to my heart… and into my pants. Hit me up if you ever find yourself divorced or poly, girl. 😉
Killing it. My app crashed twice - you are making a real difference - working great now! There should be a flood and I hope all my students and friends use this model for years!
A shortened version of a longer comment I posted months ago: I predict 60 to 70 Republicans in the House and 2 to 4 Republicans in the Senate will be losing their seats come the mid-terms in November! Here's the thing, it doesn't matter how much money Republican politicians raise or how much they gerrymander/disenfranchise the voters in their districts, because if they lack any real policies that motivate at least 40% of the people to vote for them, they can't win their elections!
You are right, up to a point. What matters is WHO COUNTS THE VOTES. (And of course, how the voting or scoring machine recorded your vote) Our BEST bet for a (relatively) honest election, without the roving bands of white boys in muscle shirts and Tiki torches, and the State Troopers standing threateningly near particularly important key polling places - as is routinely done in Red States to minimize the minority vote - is to ask for UN observers in those key states. (I wonder if Southern Poverty Law Center can request them...)
I like where you are going with this, Jesse, but it's so much more complicated (and unjust) than that. I live in Georgia where a black lady (gasp!) is running for governor against a Republican. While the numbers show she could win, we vote using electronic machines with absolutely no record of your vote, other than easily-manipulated computer tallies. This makes me nervous for the election's outcome.
Because of American political gridlock. And no one wants to change a system that benefits them. When a party gets enough power to change the redistricting system they also have the power to instead abuse the redistricting system for more power themselves. Unless it becomes a huge election issue sometime soon. ;)
A good constitutional reform would be proportional representation. Proportional representation for the House and state legislatures, using the d'Hondt system. And abolish the Senate.
I’m in Texas and I am terrified the gerrymandering that was done here is going to make Beto lose. I hope he wins. Any Texans reading this, please vote! It’s a close race, but not close enough.
In democratic countries, you have Electoral Commissions that set up boundaries based on a public, transparent, consultative process that is carefully designed to avoid political bias. We also have voting systems where the makeup of Parliament reflects the proportion of voters that supported each party. This inevitably leads to coalition Governments, but it does wonders for diversity of representatives.
Even though she seems to suggest otherwise, this piece gives me the impression that the issue of Gerrymandering and minority rule has already been permanently decided and the Republicans have just already won.
Maybe we should stop letting elected officials draw their own maps. Seems a bit disqualifying. How about regular people doing it? No elected peeps allowed. No gov't peeps allowed. No big money donors allowed. Also TERM LIMITS and GET MONEY OUT OF POL.
Don't forget your +1 . . Take a friend and vote together , take a neighbor or a stranger Just Vote and ask for a receipt , as your voting ...don't know if they will give you one but it's worth a try

MountainMan23 great, can they get the other polling places Republicans closed in NC, Florida, Texas, Arizona and many other states over the years to open up?
No wonder the US is so low on the democracy index.
It's a wonder it *is* on that index.
according to the wikipedia list, it isn't surprising to see that they are under the category "flawed democracy".

I really wish we'd stop counting the chickens before they hatch. That's how we got the 2016 results we did.

I love everything about the show's update
So glad to see Sammy again!
I like the "...take back a shopping cart." comment.
this video didn't show up in my notifications, but the act 2 and 3 did.
Hillary joke slayed.
What 'slayed' was the Buffy the Vampire SLAYER reference xD
Henrik, you don't lose what was never in contention. In America, the president doesn't win or lose the popular vote.
This is predominantly depressing but I miss you Ms. Bee.
Why is Gerrymandering still a thing?
Because of American political gridlock. And no one wants to change a system that benefits them. When a party gets enough power to change the redistricting system they also have the power to instead abuse the redistricting system for more power themselves. Unless it becomes a huge election issue sometime soon. ;)
It just seems like something that would have been deemed very unconstitutional.

This elaborate new set is even bigger than the last!
I love how the writers are Buffy fans :D
1:07 that governor map is off, NM, VT, MA, ME, IL, and NV all have republican Governors

love the new set
I can’t believe people call our country just! How was that redistricting NOT found to be illegal?!
How is gerrymandering not illegal in the US? It is in Canada. In fact, as far as I know, it's been illegal since the 1960's.
You look great Samantha!
i hate when people talk on the media about Guaranteed victories, its makes the people on that side think its pointless to vote since you already think you won and decreases voter turnout on that side
Excellent coverage, the USA can barely be called a democracy.
States that are gerrymandered by Republicans are North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, South Carolina, Indiana, Utah, and Nebraska. RIP Pennsylvania. Democrats really only gerrymandered like 4 states in 2010 Arkansas, Maryland, West Virginia, and Illinois.
Old video, I know, but pointing out there's a mistake in the governors map as MA also has a Republican governor.
I am now terrified.
some good news not covered here: pennsylvania'a cong. map was declared unconstitutional so we have a fair map now.
Shouldn't the governor's map also have Massachussetts also be coloured in red?
The new set is interesting. It looks kind of like it’s a construction site in the future of Blade Runner.
Great thumbnail graph, 49% much higher than 51%. It makes sense if you don't think about it.
Not to mention the nature of the electoral college, which predates all this, further weights smaller less urban states votes even further which also corresponds largely to conservative votes.
Well that’s a good take away, he doesn’t regret making voting unrepresentative of what the population actually supports
1:06 Illinois also has a Republican governor but they don't show it on the map.
TheDutchViewer Those are
states where Republicans control both state legislatures and the governorship.
Saaaaaaaaaaaamanthaaaaaaaaaaaa, we love you! But this is scary as heck!
This is why we have to take it back now. A few more sessions and they will have gerrymandered and suppressed so much it's impossible
I get it now all the purge movies take place in Florida. Perfect
Epic new set. :] :]
The district on the lower left is Maryland district 3 which was gerrymandered by Democrats
I was wanting her to make a joke about Seven of Nine...
I missed this woman in my life!
1:06
These are only the 26 Republican trifectas
They also currently have governors of Nevada, New Mexico, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Vermont and Maine but with Democrats controling at least one chamber in state legislature.
it makes me sick to my stomach to see just how corrupt the system has become and that its all about greed and power
Not sure how you missed IL on the map of Republican Governors. Bruce Rauner's been stonewalling a budget for years because he only wants tax cuts paid for by huge slashes in programs like health, mental health, childcare, etc.
The real shame is in the world we are leaving our children, all in the name of greed.
sammy b!!! hottie with knowledge
O my god, he IS one of the Gentlemen!
I just got an ad promoting the border wall before this video lol
They missed my state of Maryland. We’ve had a republican governor for a while now
