Totally fascinating footage - the contrast of eras at Washington Union Station is marked by the autos in front of it. I went through there in August, 1974, ironically, it was the day before President Nixon resigned. Toured the Capital that day. The station looked tidy. Not a lot of people there. The Metroliners were against the bumpers. The Amtrak train I rode to Washington, out of Richmond, VA. Broad Street Station, went through a long, long tunnel, at a high rate of speed, before emerging into Washington Union Station. It was a rag-tag Amtrak train, powered by a pair of sooty Seaboard Coast Line and Penn Central E units. The trolleys and electric buses were great. They had the electrified buses in my hometown of Atlanta, but they were a little before my time. I think the last line came down in 1960/1961.
My grandma lived in the area. She said that when she was little the city was like this. She said a steam train used to come by with a bunch of smoke. And when she heard it she used to run into her room and hide.
Wow! This is great!!!!
Thanks for sharing this footage!

At 11:40 we begin to see Penn Central GG1s and Amtrak Metro Liners. Very complete histrical timeline.
Another amazing video thank you
To anyone on here who got to live during the 50s and 60s, and see these machines in action, and this area not be so overcrowded. im so jealous.
Fantastic stuff, you've done a great job on the sound and I am guessing done plenty to the picture quality too?
The first half didn't need much correction but the later stuff was pretty badly color shifted.
Film begins at Brunswick, Maryland.
Did you actually take this footage cuz it looks really cool
No. Film credits are in the description.
That was great.
Before the days of MARC, AMTRAK and metro...
Were the PCCs a subway of sorts or was the viaduct simply traversing under the streets for a minute?
Not a subway, just short dips under cross streets to reduce conflicts with traffic.
13:42 Nathan H5!!!!!!!!
Ah, the good old days at Union Station. B&O, C&O, PRR, RF&P, SOU, and Capital Transit's street cars. Today's action is kind of bland.
