Around where I live Airgas came in and bought everybody. And yes, they are a screw job. A smaller regional company called Maine Oxy came in, I switched and can't say enough good about them. Great to deal with and prices are reasonable.

Airgas is absolutely awful, I'd drive 30 minutes out of my way to go to the praxair place over them. Not that they were better on price, but definitely better on service.
Nowadays I don't weld much, so I eat the cost of tank swaps at the farm store. Less hassle and I usually run out of gas at 7pm on a saturday anyways, and both of the welding shops within an hour of me close at 4pm.

For those of us without a solder pump you can put a little of that liquid flux on the solder wick before you try to desolder. Helps the wick to draw in the old solder.

And clean the tip Wes! I personally prefer the dollar store pot scrubber but the sponge works fine.

    • @sparcnut
      @sparcnut Рік тому +3

To clear solder from plated through-holes that refuse to give up easily: Dip the corner of your wick end into the offending hole, then lay the side of your iron tip on top of the wick and gently squash the wick down against the board. The idea is to get at least a couple strands of wick down far enough to actually touch the offending solder. Cut a fresh end on your wick & dip the last 1/4" or so in liquid flux before each attempt for best results.
If a through-hole still refuses to clear even with this method, the problem is almost always insufficient heat transfer from the iron tip to the wick and solder. Raising the iron's temperature generally does NOT improve things at this point; it will mostly just nuke the flux faster (very counterproductive). What you want instead is more thermal mass and a larger effective contact patch transferring heat from the iron into the wick. In other words, switch to the biggest chisel tip you've got that you can fit into the available space on the board.

    • @stagggerlee

For anybody else reading this that struggles with soldering, clean what you're working on really well with alcohol, use flux on the joints you're soldering/desoldering, and keep your tip clean! For the last one, get a brass sponge and some tip tinner. Guaranteed good results.

Max is really “hounding you” LOL. Of course I did NOT get the notification! What do we expect? This is UA-cam! (Not sure what their issue is) Looking forward to seeing what you have time to come up with and a second channel, Wes!

Ahhhh yes. Because your channel is so well known for being provocative and fringe....
UA-cam algorithm at its best. 😂
On the plus side maybe that means we'll get some more electronics troubleshooting vids. You did a few of those way back on your channel and I've always very much enjoyed them

Very nice to see you get them all going. Not sure if you have a Matheson TriGas near you but they are awesome to deal with for welding gas. They don’t care whose name is on the bottle or when it was certified, they will sell you whatever size you want and their prices were reasonable. Last year acetylene was $60 and oxygen was $20 for the large bottles (not sure what proper size name is) and they just swap bottles with you, they don’t fill yours..

I have around 25 bottles total between the truck, garage, farm, and my parents place and I can confirm that Matheson is the best I've deal with. They won't take everything, but they will take anything under a certain size and anything with a slick neck. They have a list of companies that have been bought up or are out of business that they accept bigger bottles from too. Last time I saw them bring it out it was about 4 pages long

Hey Wes, next time you do any desoldering do not forget to use flux, use more than you think you need because the original solder joints are already in there and they're flux is gone. So you need to add flux and it will help the solder desolder a lot easier. When you were using the desoldering braid if you had squirted some flux on there it would have sucked those holes clean. And afterwards you can clean it up with a q-tip and some 90 plus percent isopropyl alcohol. And also when heating a joint and pulling on a component be very careful and only move it a little bit at a time, that's why you pulled that through hole via. Also with that desoldering pump, which I hate, adding some flux and then working it around in a circular motion while lightly pulling on the component is the way to remove them. But I prefer to just throw some solder on the joint, drop some flux and then hold my iron on it and lightly pull it out and work the component back and forth and then use braid. ripped so many via's out learning how to do it correctly.

Wes, I have done a lot of alternator and starter repair and have found canned air computer duster to work really well for removing melted solder.

I think you should use flux on the desoldering side as well. Flux while desoldering might have saved your plated thru hole. Alcohol for flux cleanup. Always nice to see old equipment brought back on line.

About 55 years ago my parents bought a very early (for the UK) colour TV and shortly after it arrived, an engineer appeared to carry out some safety mods. Some caps wired to the base of the display were subject to failure if the tube flashed over (25kv) and unfortunately tended to explode. The fix was to fit modified caps which had a plastic wrap to contain the resulting damage ! Must admit that I had heard of the reputation of your problem caps - maybe some shrink-wrap would have been enough of a fix :)

Hey Wes! Just a suggestion on removing components from the board. Use a de-soldering wick to remove the solder from the board. That way, you won't put too much heat on the board & lift the tabs.

You are absolutely correct with refrigerant and gas being a cartel. Ever since they started replacing R12 and equating it to the "hole in the ozone" layer I've felt our government was up to no good! As the years have passed by I have no doubt "cartel" is the right word! Good luck with the new channel!

Im lucky enough to have a gas supplier local who is privately owned, I can turn in a bottle for equal trade with or without another company name on it. Re-certifying a bottle is $50. After many years of getting bent over from big name companies its nice to have a good supplier, I can only hope they never get bought out.

Wes, you are so right about getting oxygen and acetylene tanks filled. I have bill of sale and ownership docs for tanks that got traded out a couple decades ago. It's like you offended them by coming into their business and trying to buy something.

Wes you are exactly right about the tanks. I leased my tanks for 45 years and the lease became so high I decided to turn them in and buy the smaller tanks and that way my son could inherit them. No dice . Now they keep telling me there is a shortage of tanks and will not sell me any. I used a local supplier for 40 of those 45 years and Airgas bought them out. What a game changer. I just call it Un-Social Socialism.

I had so many issues with gas suppliers I won't mig, tig, or gas weld unless I have to. Just stick or flux core for almost all my projects. Back then they would make you buy their new bottle. Then refuse to fill it, only swap it out. Give you back the oldest bottle they had. Then when it needs filled it would be out of date and would not swap it out. Wanted you to buy a new bottle or pay for pressure testing. They would even try those scams on a large company I worked with. For someone only doing a little work it is way too costly to play those games.
