I just wish i could see this music being played live, I live in the UK and alas at 69 year of age. I am unable due to health to fly so who ever put these vids on here I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I never heard Cajun Music until I was in Louisiana in the military. Fell in love with it the first time I heard it.
Sitting on The Bank of Cane River Bowing my Fiddle to this tune Under A Magnificent Full Moon . You are Missed Nathan Abshire and Dewey Balfa but the Heart and Music from both of you remains beating .
I have just realized why I love these series so much, it's not just the music which is awesome but the scenes that remind me so much of my time in Africa where similar images are still there today.
i was Lucky enought to see them all in my little town in France during a tour .probably one of the best concert of all my life . at the end of the concert they standed at the door to shake hands of every body...!
I was also born in Kaplan, and lived my first eleven years of life there. In November 1963, our family moved north to Pineville, then later, further north, and an hour west of Shreveport, into Texas. I still have some fond memories of my early years in Kaplan, and the school classmates I left behind.
This is my favorite of all the videos you have put together, sad to think that all these folks have now passed on. Balfa Brothers and Nathan Abshire were the best ever.
+JRCinKY This is my favourite Nathan Abshire/Balfa Brothers song too, I had an earlier version, but I seem to have lost the record, it was better than even this. Sorry late reply, I come here not very often. My next project here, will be putting together a Kitty Wells live, at her prime vid, including all her songs showing her actuially perform back in the day, not modern, God rest her soul, before I go back to the good old Cajun.... and that is when I find time......
They don’t make em like that anymore. Aren’t we lucky we can call upon these amazing videos to reminisce. Something to be said for modern technology!! 😉😁❤️
Kaplan is a small town in southern Louisiana, it is named for Abrom Kaplan who bought the property in the early 1900's. Nathan worked and lived in nearby Gueydan. The song lyrics changed a lot through the decades but mostly refer to a girl (the love of the singer) going away and if she goes too long he worries that he will not want her to return. It's very heartwrenching and sad.
Check out the Dave Robicheaux novels set in Cajun Southern Louisiana.. written by James Lee Burke... very evocative and sympathetic account of life on the bayou... Great stories too!
1:16 to 1:23 That's the second Crowley courthouse; I recognized it immediately. Who knows what the gathering was about, but I'm reminded of the Children's Prohibition gathering. Several of these clips, actually, are of Crowley.

Hurricanes are tragedies wherever they strike but for poor New Orleans to be facing yet another devastation is a really dreadful thought. New Orleans always feels like one of the great cultural cities of the World. This song and its film are so poignant.

A(Vocal)AA(Vocal)ABB(Vocal)A(Vocal)ABB(Vocal)ABB. Raymond Francois (1990) The song predates blues, it is Acadian in origin.
Hi Dave, it is lovely! Well, I believe that it does, the Blues is late 19th c at the very earliest and most likely manifested in the 1920's. This song is Acadian and predates that by half a century, at least in this form, I don't believe that French Canadians lived without music or did not take it to Louisiana. I never said it was a blues tune, I know my waltzes. I do believe Cajun music, existing in a well preserved form, is one of many examples of how music actually progressed into the modern era through many sources. From my experience only, I'd guess that it is possible, in this case, that this beautiful song is derived from a Creole tune, but I often show parallels to support the fact that modern music, rock and roll etc., has holartic origin. xx
Strange...I always thought two-steps and waltzes are two different types of music, given that there are a number of Cajun two-steps which are definitely NOT waltzes. Silly me. LOL
It most certainly does, I forget the origin and will post it here when I remember or find it again. For the toon derives from an much earlier Cajun song. Sorry, you are wrong, Cajun music derives from Acadian and predates the blues by many decades in it's style..
+Wade Falcon What an interesting, well informed and wonderful Cajun site you have Wade. Just spent a couple of hours there! A must see for anyone that enjoys these remarkable sounds from the past.

because it's from the heart
I don't know; but I'm with you.
If they taught in school the history of cajun people you would understand.
Have always loved how you put music to those old films. Used to go to Kaplan in the early 70's and have danced to this great song. Thanks for sharing.

A) this does not per-date blues.
B) it isn't even blues... it's a simple two-step waltz.
And very good it is too.
