  • In this video we're listening to The Kinks. We've really been enjoying this band's music, and we're always eager to continue this journey with them. And we figured the autumn theme was suitable. Let's take a listen. Enjoy!

The Kinks opened for the Beatles on there first major UK tour so the Beatles definitely knew the Kinks and the Kinks definitely knew the Beatles. In X-Ray Ray Davies autobiography he discusses them opening for the Beatles. John Lennon was giving Ray Davies a hard time before the show. The Kinks hadn't yet released You Really Got Me . As the Kinks stepped out on the stage John Lennon said to Ray Davies "iIfyou run out of songs we can lend you some". Ray turned back to him and said "We've got this one and played You Really Got Me which was usually their closing song. It was the first time most of the crowd had heard the song and they went crazy. The Kinks were kicked off the tour immediately.

Great song from one of my favourite bands. Ray Davies is one of the best songwriters in music. The Kinks are a treasure.

You have to hear their song “ Celluloid Heroes”. It’s about all the Hollywood actors and actresses that have passed on. I think it’s their best song.

Their album Arthur (or the Rise and Fall of the British Empire) is fantastic & was the soundtrack to a British teleplay. There are some great rockers on there such as “Victoria,” “Brainwashed,” “Shanghai-La,” “Mr. Churchill Says,” & “Arthur.”

This is from the year of Flower Power 1967. At that time we listened a lot to the English offshore stations such as Radio London, Radio Caroline and of course to our own offshore station Radio Veronica off the Dutch coast. Great time and in England and the Netherlands there were many many beat groups. The Kinks were one of my favorites.

A highly unusual structure for this song: apart from the two "la-la-la .... " choruses, they don't use the same tune twice anywhere. (In other words, it's a rhapsody, in the correct musical meaning of the term - look it up and you'll see what I mean.)
Note too the curiously flat tone to Ray's vocals, no hint of echo at all. It helps add to the harking-back-to-a-previous -era mood of the piece, as though it actually is a thirty year old recording.

Also just want to say watching you guys react to these incredible Kinks songs is really enjoyable. Also it's a very knowledgeable group of Kinks fans here. These recommendations have been the really good Kinks songs rather than the most well known ones. A suggestion for the next Kinks song whenever that is 20th Century Man. It's a wonderful song

Ray Davies is a genius. Here's another single that wasn't on an album, in the era of Kinks' singles such as Deadend Street, Big Black Smoke, Mr. Pleasant, Days, etc. I followed the Kinks from the very beginning to the bitter end. God Save The Kinks!

This is one of my favorite songs. I heard something about the phrase “autumn almanac” being derived from another phrase in the song that was played backwards. This entire album is pure delight, with great great songs

Thank you for doing this. 🙂
Their music is so diverse they had songs like this and 'Dedicated Follower of Fashion', and 'All of The Day and All of The Night'. The great Ray and Dave Davies, they influenced so many bands at the time and later, bands such as 'The Jam' and 'The Stranglers' their music is timeless.

Yah! Fantastic song about Cherry Tree Woods (stiil there) in East Finchley, about a 10 minutes walk from where Ray Davies grew up and 5 minutes from the Clissold Arms where the Kinks first played which has loads of memorabilia from their early days and is a "Kinks' pub today. (The Who were influenced by The Kinks for their first hit single I Can't Explain). Incidentally Fairport Convention (Richard Thompson) were formed about a 10 minute walk away (but in posh Muswell Hill) from where the Kinks were formed. Autumn Almanac is a grower, keep playing it, I think Something Else is their best album too... I used to live in the area and my son loved playing in Cherry Tree Woods. It's a very safe and easy-going old London park full of trees, tennis courts, kids play areas, so they sound of the song reflects the character of the woods in Autumn. You would travel to Blackpool - the most famous seaside resort in Britain in the Autumn because they have the "Illuminations" an old fashion light show on every street introduced in 1879 to demonstrate what electric street lights look like (really) and each year built around a theme with many of the trams of the seafront lit up to look like gondolas or pirate ships or rockets. In the 60s that was a major childhood treat as only Blackpool had Illuminations. So a nostalgic look back at the pleasures of a damp Autumn, watching the Arsenal, whose football ground is nearby, Sunday roast lunch is more warming after the summer has cooled away. Great (North) London song. Love your reaction to those wonderful Muswell Hillbillies The Kinks! And do check out Ray's live version of Shangri-La at the (nearby) Roundhouse that you mention, it is a treat ua-cam.com/video/bI0QHXTM7Fo/v-deo.html

Chris is right. Not only did the Beatles listen to the Kinks Paul McCartney really liked their “Dead End Street” and arguably “Girl you really got me” is the most influential rock song of all time and influenced every rock band at the time including the Beatles. As for Ray Davies he liked the Beatles but was less impressed when they started to experiment with studio recordings like “Revolver” and “Sergeant Peppers Hearts Band” and in fact the album “Village Green Preservation Society” was very much a deliberate distancing by Davies from the growing psychedelia of the British musical scene.
Davies was every bit as talented songwriter as Lennon and McCartney and the main two reasons the Beatles were more successful was down them having two extraordinary songwriters and ironically the increasingly sophisticated study experimentation that Davies had refused to embrace in 1966. There is a UA-cam video about Davies lukewarm review of the Beatles’s album “Revolver” in the music magazine “Disc and Music Echo”which so incensed George Harrison that he responded in the following week’s edition!

    Love the Kinks
Fortunately saw them Live in Concert at the Spectrum in Philly with Ian Hunter & Mick Ronson opening in 1979-80. The Kinks sounded Absolutely Amazing. Hunter/Ronson worked the crowd into a Frenzy. The Kinks were touring on the Low Budget album & Hunter/Ronson touring on the “You’re Never Alone With a Schizophrenic. Maybe react to the Kinks song from that album

In case you don't know, The Kinks were part of the so called British musical invasion of America in the 60s. However, they wouldn't sign US music Union forms and couldn't play there and neither side would back down. They went back to England and from then on decided to do English life tales. What they knew.

@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering - Reminds me of my very first 'pseudo' stereo when I was 9 (in '79), passed on to me from my Big Brother and which had only 1 speaker. I got obsessed with the very spooky-sounding 'Blue Jay Way' single by the Beatles ...and got a fright 25 years or so later when I listened to that song for the first time on YT, because it suddenly had very loud and clearly audible vocals! At first I was confused, but then I realised that they must've been on the missing channel of my old stereo, hence I'd only heard spooky whispering back then 👻😄

@@mightyV444 I think partly the limitation in recording equipment but also, a lot of studios/Producers would use the track for more than one artist, making it far cheaper and faster to produce.
