John, I know you did this video a year or more ago. But, thank you. I have been beating my head against the wall looking for a reasonably priced yet "dependable" torque screwdriver. You helped narrow my search.
The Vortex one is made by a company called FIRSTINFO. They make a identical model with a 10-90 inch pound scale that comes with the T-handle. It’s my go to.
Wow, right now on Amazon if you add the FIRSTINFO one, and then there is a promotion to add a contour gauge for free. Go to your cart and there is a coupon you can clip. The total price for the torque wrench AND the contour gauge WITH tax was only 77. I'm not sure how that worked, but it did.
@@allthecommonsense Well like your name it’s should be common sense and knowing it’s adjustments on what torque setting you want it on in inch pounds. Normal torque wrenches are usually in Foot pounds.
After searching and watching NUMEROUS videos, this is the ONLY one that described how to set a very specific setting. The Vortex is basically the exact same as the Nightforce brand which I have. I have never needed a torque screwdriver therefore never knew how to set the correct setting/limiter. Nightforce did not include directions on how to adjust it or what the numbers on the handle represent. For a price tag of $275 for their kit, they should have included instructions. This sort of information should NOT be this difficult to find so THANK YOU for your time and instructions! Great video.
The Vortex unit looks very similar to the one Lyman sell. It’s worth noting the Vortex comes with a very good no questions asked lifetime warranty as do most of their products.
Thank you. I could probably do that although just like last time it's pretty anecdotal since I'm testing against another unknown torque wrench and its calibration.
@@FClassJohn I think the repeatability is more important than accuracy to the real torque value. The repeatability of the fix it sticks was a big surprise and advantage. I thought your last test did a good job looking at the repeatability. Thanks again, I’m loving the videos!
I know the Real Avid doesn't have a certification but I've seen it put to the test and even after 1,000 cycles it was one of the most accurate when tested on a calibrator. P.S. on that same video, many of the certified torque wrenches were no where near as accurate as the Real Avid.
Thank you. The problem with store bought torque wrenches is that they typically don't go low enough (in/lb or NM) and are larger which isn't great for range bags or traveling.
I have always been a big fan of Proto. The Proto J6104A 1/4" Drive Torque Screwdriver is what I use for my guns and it is superb for what we do. Proto is USA made and it is not a cheap tool. I think I paid ~$350 for it but considering what some of us blow on reloading presses, scales, and annealers, it is comparatively inexpensive. It is the only one I ever need because it is well built, awesome warranty, and is easily calibrated. No space shuttles, no space stations, and no lander on mars, just a positive click that you can trust. It wouldn't surprise me if JPL doesn't have its share of Proto torque systems though😁.
I looked it up and seems nice but it doesn't look like it goes high enough for my needs. I need something that can go up to at least 60in/lbs but as low at 10 in/lbs. But I'm glad you're happy with yours and thank you for sharing.
One of my rifle lights finger pad has a torque setting of 8 so the CDI seems like the better option. The other settings range in the 20's. I can probably get an individual fix it stick torque limiter for over 40 in/lb
The scar needs a 65inlb torque wrench. The barrel is 62inlb. Nm is the amount of force it takes to throw a given number of fig newton's. 10 nm is the amount of force it takes to throw a bag with 10 fig newton's a meter.
Great review! I was going to purchase the wheeler fat stick until I seen online reviews about the Real Avid and even gun smith’s say they like it much better the the Wheeler. This just confirmed my purchase! TU..
Just said that. As a guy who built class 6 at west point and restaurants from Texas 44 top brands. I know this stuff the fat with the 28 piece kit is a plus minus 2 straight driver . T it and 45 it for serious leverage for 65 bucks on Amazon. Done. Nuff said
I bought the FIRSTINFO torque wrench after watching your excellent review. It's maybe where the Vortex comes from. From Amazon: FIRSTINFO Precision Certified Torque Limiting Limited Screwdriver Set, 1/4 Inch Universal Hex Bit Holder, 10-50 in-lbs with Screwdriver Bits & Bits Extension Bar & Extra T-Handle Anyways thank you John. Like you I don't really care for my Wheeler Fat wrench. But the Wheeler was popular when I first searched for a torque limiter. And that's what I ended up with.
Never used one and it's just not a design I'm interested in. I know there's people who like it so maybe if I ever do another torque test I'll get one just for fun.
Just my opinion. But I would trust the torque wrenches from auto industry tool makers over all of these. Most of those that are high quality are certified and are serviceable to recertification. These are definitely a "you get what you pay for tool."
You didn't include the best...Borka! I have Fat Wrench and Fix it Sticks but they're both a POS compared to Borka. I despise the fact that Fix it Sticks are not audible also and ordered the very best in Borka. Wish I had known about Borka from the start; could have saved some money!
I bought a Real Avid, but after getting it and trying it out, I can't trust it. It's lowest setting is supposed to be 10, but the lowest setting on the handle goes down to 6. Is 6 the real zero at 10 in lbs or do you have to turn the handle to the actual 0 number to represent 10 in lbs? Instructions do not say and I can't get an answer back from Real Avid. I don't trust it and I won't take the chance of over-torquing my scope rings. I returned it. Instead, I bought a digital FAT wrench. Highly accurate. I love it.
Seriously?? That’s just what I bought and that doesn’t sound good.. was going to get the wheeler but even gunsmiths reviews liked the real avid over the fat stick. 🤔
I went with my gut since I got zero response back from Real Avid customer service. I couldn't find anything online about what the actual 0 was. Maybe the one I got was off in its calibration, but I had no way of testing it myself. Keeping it was not worth ruining a $700 scope and the Fat Wrench I did use, worked just fine. Don't get me wrong, I also went with the majority vote by getting the Real Avid 1st, but a torque wrench is never supposed to bottom out lower than its lowest value, and the Real Avid I got, did.

Thanks for this. Found it cheaper by 40$ here in Canada compared to the Vortex one.
And it comes with the T-handle. Thanks man!!!

Hey John
What tools do you use to change your barrels???
Currently using Short Action Customs modular action wrench and their barrel vise.
why didnt you do the Capri Tools CP21075 ?
It’s the exact same as the Vortex I reviewed so you can use that as a comparison.
