Bro, this may be an old video but you saved me. Heading to Italy and two weeks and this morning I get the dreaded ERR message. This is a super quick and simple fix!
I was actually googling "Where to take my Nikon D610 for repair?" and your video came up. I was trying to shoot stars when an unexpected gust of wind blew my (light weight tripod) over. My Nikon D610 hit relatively soft dirt. However, when I started to shoot more pictures it was the smaller mirror that flips up that was only partially flipping up. I could see where it was barely catching along the wall. That's why the half image. I basically did the same thing you suggested except on the flip up mirror. It solved the issue. All is well. Thanks for the vdeo. You save me some money. Now I can get back to shooting tonight's last supermoon of the year.
Thanks so much!!!!! I was about to sell all my gear because my D610 was "broken". I've just followed your advice and a miracle just happened :D. This only happened to me after long periods of no usage, but now it was permanent. THANKS SO MUCH!
Thank you so much. You helped me fix my D750 and saved me the frustration of sending it to Nikon service center. I wonder why the mirror gets stuck to the casing for so many people.
Thanks for taking the time to talk through this issue. My d750 experienced this after about 4 hours shooting - issue free. Then it gave an ERR message and seemingly locked up. At first I pulled the battery, lens and SD cards, the put it all back together and it worked - for about 5 shots... then ERR again. I have just done the PRY method you described and it has been firing perfectly... I will see how it does next shoot I do were its over a long time (may be heat related for me)... Thanks again. D
You just got me a 200$ d610 with 50mm. Had stuck (not working shutter) i saw this, tried it, and whalla. Thank you, the guy selling it wasnt so happy when i checked it, knew the issue, payed him, then fixed in under 10 seconds. He said, Damn! How did you know that. I said i watched a youtube about it, saw you have one with same issue for sale cheap. I got lucky. He didnt know i pushed it over while looking at camera, realized it was fixable. Than paid, it was that easy. He really only needed to tap it some. Hehe, thank you. I look for d610 shutter sticking issues for sale.
wow. i cant believe a 2017 video saved me lots of money and stress today in 2021.I use a D600 and D90, but i use more the D90 as i still need better lens for my D600. I am busy packing my gear for camping weekend and i decided to test the D90 before packing, and for some reason, it just didnt sound right, so took did what you did aswell, checked the photo and for me, it was complete black. Tested without lens and thats when i saw that mirror wasnt moving at all. Quick search on youtube, and this video was #1 on the list. Now my D600 is working fine. Thank you James.
Thank you so much, it worked! The mirror in my Nikon D610 was not going up for some reason but it wasn't really stuck, I could lift it up with ease. So I used the screwdriver to keep it up while I pressed the release button multiple times and it worked! Saved me a trip to the repair shop. Much appreciated!
legend! ive been having this issue on and off for a year or so with my nikon d610, it would often just do this then start working eventually after multiple frustrated atempts at just hitting the shutter button hoping it would fix itself, but after it happened again and my belligerent fix didnt work i found this video and it worked perfectly, exactly what i needed, and i was also about to contact a repair store and possibly not have my only decent camera for my daughters end of year performance tonight. life saver. may good things come your way and keep up the great work mate
You're the man! You saved me a lot of time and probably lots of money, when the fixing was so simple ! I'm excited, I'm in vacation in Paris and after 4 days I will be able to take pictures for the last few . Thanks again
like many others have said! thank you so much!! I had already printed my nikon repair label and was planning on taking it to fedex tuesday to ship for repair when thankfully it was raining today and I was killing time and happened across this video...in my case I was an hour in to a milkyway time lapse when suddenly the images were all cut off other than the top 3rd....took me all of 6 minutes to fix...5:21 was watching your entire video before attacking the DIY repair...plastic screwdriver carefully placed to nudge the right side of the camera body and 1 press of the button and bam! fully working camera again! ... on a downside I was hoping nikon would say the fix was big $$ at which point thats all the excuse I needed to get a new 850 ;)
I have a D810 and dropped my camera from about 3 feet onto a concrete floor. Banged the top corner by the play button. Had the same issue, but it was on the opposite side you had shown. I thought is was the lens. I did the same as you described and heard a snap and the mirror must have popped back into place. I will check the focus when back in the studio to compare to my other 810. Thanks a ton! Saved my some money.
Hey man, you saved my life. I've been waiting to have an FX for so long, and as soon as I bought it I had this same problem, but thanks to your video I was able to solve it! Bravo!!
thank you!!!!! This saved me! nikon wanted $650 upfront just to look at it. Camera shops are all closed. And nikon would have said my d600 is too old to fix anyway. Saved me!!!!! Thank you!!!!
Hello! Thank you so much for this! I dropped my camera at the end of my photo job tonight. Turns out, it was an easy fix thanks to your video. THANK YOU!!!
This worked! I was getting the dreaded ERR code. My local camera shop quoted me few hundred bucks to fix my power aperture drive unit and do a sensory cleaning because it wasn't my lense.. DIDN'T NEED EITHER. Boom! Thank You!
you absolute freaking legend!!!!! Super gentle pry and my shutter worked a treat. Totally the same as you, the moment it stuck I knew... that frightful noise of it not being a "clean" snap. Thanks again :)
I also left my D610 in my bag but I left it for 3 months. I tried taking a shot and it made a funny whirring sound, almost sounding like a film camera. It gave me a blinking ERR code on top. Ill give this a fix a try...
And........IT WORKED! Thanks for the video. I was already going to send it in and I was already expecting hundreds of $$, but luckily I found this video. Thanks again.
Wow! Someone asked me to photograph his D600 and I started fiddling with it. I'm a Canon guy, so I was getting used to the Nikon menus and what not, and I thought I had messed up something, until I realized the mirror wasn't moving when taking photos, and the live preview was 90% black. I thought I was in trouble because it would have been easy for my friend to assume that I had ruined his camera. Your video helped me fix it, so my arse is saved, thanks to you!
Dude, I should have listened to you the first time!! I had this problem, thought it was different because it didn't seemed jammed when I lifted up the mirror, and so I sent it in, and paid $600 for repairs (well actually $800 because my flash was broken too which Nikon forced me to fix, grrr). Then, conveniently right after the Nikon warranty of the repair expired, it happened AGAIN. Exact same "ERR" message, exact same thing with the mirror not going up. I was so furious I revisited this video and pried it like you said and voila it works. I am so thankful to you, and absolutely DESPISE Nikon now. It was such an easy fix - took me 30 seconds - but, no, Nikon told me I had to send my camera across Canada to pay them $600 for it. A big finger flip to Nikon and a big hug to James Black for this video.
Awesome video. I had the same happen to my D750 after a small drop. I was on a sailboat at anchor with no access to any repair techs. This video saved my mini vacation!!! Thank you so much for sharing this info!!!
Thanks so much! I had this happen 6 weeks ago and have been asking all my photog friends for help with a fix with no luck. The eyeglass screwdriver and a slight pry did the trick!!
Thanks. Just now had a similar problem with my D600. Checked on the net and got your video. Removed the lens and clicked few times. My camera Started working after few clicks..Thank you for your advice.
WOW. Thank you it worked. My Nikon D80 has sat for a few years and I finally bought a new battery. The mirror worked a few times then stopped. I did slightly pry in the area with much caution. and it released the mirror.
THANK YOUUUU!! Saved my life! Lol and money/hassle of bringing it in! I’ve been waiting because I didn’t have extra money to fix it.. and when I googled I couldn’t figure out the correct term to Google! So found your vid & it was spot on!! THANKS SO MUCH
thank you soooo much. you saved my life. was in the middle of assignment, and my camera was unable to shoot anything. was so stressful of thinking the so much hassle i will have, but this quick fix really worked like magic. you're really an angel 🥰🥰🥰
Thanks so much for your post. Totally fixed our problem. We improvised with a rounded plastic chopstick as we are at the beginning of a week long vacation. You helped save the day!
Awesome! So glad the video helped! Nothing worse than having a camera down, but nothing better than an easy fix to get it up and running again! Happy shooting!
fantastic. was facing same issue with my d610. camera was un used for a month. i pushed side wall with my thumb... and it works. i was planing to send it for shutter replacement but this video saved about $150
James Black after few hours i.notice that every 1st click after 5 to 10 mins, mirror got stuck in upword position and it came back to normal when i click again. and after this it works fine until d610 take rest for more than 5mins. any clue ?
Hmmm. I'm not sure what that would be. I would maybe try going back in and separating the wall from the mirror just a little bit more. If you do just be very careful and don't apply too much pressure, don't want to damage the mirror.
You are the best. Thank you for sharing this valuable information. I was about to send in the camera to get fixed. You saved me a lot of money and time. Thanks again!
William Hall Thank you very much for the video, fixed the problem in 5 seconds, on my D750. Once I removed the lens a saw the problem, mirror in the up position. Thanks again.
I'm having similar issues with my D700. I know it isn't a new camera by nowaday standards but still does the job. However, it started to show its age recently when I took it out to have a few snaps with it. It was sitting for about 5 months in the safe and I do recall it working in February. Out of so many shots it failed to open the shutter but it was like 2 out of a 100 shots. After those months it was sitting it started to struggle to open the shutter at all. It took me over 100 attemps to get it back to swing. I tried and tried to force it to open the shutter with the release button and the aperture preview button until it gave and started to work again. I'm gonna test it today for an hour or so to see if it fails again. I wanted to give it to my brother as a gift but I'm unsure if it is actually worth to be gifted.
Update - as of today I have fired up the D700 and it worked for some unknown reason. Then it started to do it's error again. I figured that it has to be related to the mirror box as it won't open the shutter not flip the mirror up when the error happens. Still not 100% sure what is causing the issue.
Huge shoutout to you James!!! I've had the exact same problem happening to my d610 ony my trip to Corfu, Greece! It worked fine the day I packed and on arrival it showed the err code and made weird noises. It has around 120k actuations and thought yup, broken send it to service but you helped me and my d610 works like a charme again!! Vacation is over without digital pictures bud luckily I took my analog with me to shoot some film! Thanks mate and greetings from Germany!!! :-))
Worked on my D600. The key is to recognize this situation. Put the camera in manual mode, take the lens off, and shoot. You should see the shutter move. If you don't see anything move/cover the sensor, then this fix might be what you need.
Hi I have a Nikon D610. It was working perfectly till today evening. I rented a Nikon 2X tele converter & when I tried with my lenses, I started to see lower part black...I can send you the photo if required...can You tell me what’s the problem and how to fix? Thanks in advance - Imran
Thanks so much !!! This worked for me in seconds. I had exactly the same problem, just put a very thin prying tool down the left hand side of the shutter and gave a very very gentle push and hey presto !!! Great video ! My Nikon D610 lives another day 😁👍
My shutter mirror glass (mirror box) fell out of the body. It would get locked up, when I try to take photo. I can see the inner box move but it get jam. I did not inspect the lever. I was looking to replace the Camera with something better but it's cheaper on sending my Nikon D3200 for repair through Nikon. Should I also have them inspect the sensor? Since the D3200 fell onto the floor from the counter top.
See I have a problem with my d5600, it’s not stuck, it acts like it’s taking a picture but still tells me error shutter release, so do I just lift the mirror a little and try taking a picture to see if it works or?
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!! Oh my god I tried everything to fix this issue, resetting the camera with the two button method, cleaning off the contacts on the lens and changing batteries/lenses with no help!! But this made it work!!! Thank you!
YES.....my mirror was stuck too. I didn't have to pry it down because it came down by itself a few minutes later. HOWEVER.....it got stuck again the next day. Any idea why and what to do about it? ( so it won't keep happening ). Thank You !!!!
i get the press shutter release button again error once i use the quiet shutter mode...the shutter goes up but wont come back down until i press shutter release button again as the error message says...any tips on fixing this??
It happened to my d90 as well.. But instead of doing that diy repair thing as you demonstrated.. I immediately went to Nikon store for repair. I rather spend extra money for the repair... It is risky to do that diy repair because it will cause more damage to the camera, especially other mechanical parts... And nikon repaired the mirror of my camera without changing any mechanical parts plus they also cleaned the sensor.
For my nikon d3300 that mirror is locked but it is locked to upward direction not coming down if I pull down it's going up again? What is the problem can you tell me ? And how can I fix this
Hi! Do you have any idea about how expensive it is to fix a "stuck" focus motor (the screwdriver)? :( The one of my D750 stays out all the time, even if I change the focus to manual, it's still out instead of inside the body :c
Thank you very much Sir......Thanks of your generousity in sharing this information I could repair my D3100 I have dropped.....Thank you and all the best...Andrea from Italy
i really hoped this would help. i’m 13 and i love photography i have since i was 8. it’s been a big part of my life with my grandfather being a professional photographer.. i got a camera about a year ago.. (Nikon D40) and it will work for one or two shots then say “Error. Press shutter release button again.” it’s super heartbreaking since the only other camera i currently have is a Canon Powershot, which is a great camera.. i just love shooting with the D40! i really can’t afford to get it fixed professionally and my grandfather currently lives hours away and i don’t get to see him. i miss taking pictures of wildlife and plants and i just moved to a gorgeous state that’s blooming with exactly that. i don’t know what to do! if anyone can help please do! i feel so sad!
you decided 13 year old camera would be a ideal starter camera? getting it fixed would cost more than buying a entirely new camera. bruh it's like $120. get a get a newer camera in the 3000 series, all of them have 4 times the megapixel count, features, and actually don't cost that much lol.
Hentai my bad.. i didn’t buy any of my cameras personally and really don’t know much about the cameras themselves.. i know i really should learn and i’m trying i just have a lot going on. i’m most likely going to buy a new camera, it was just a little sad.
Thank you!!! Woke up this morning to a stuck mirror and I have a shoot on Saturday. I only had to stress for about 20 minutes thanks to you.
Skip to 3:00 for the actual reason you came here.
some heroes don't wear capes
No need to be a hater, this guy just saved many people.
Havaseet2 thank you so much
Till Raguin no they just talk so much instead of getting to the point
Thank youuuuu

Yup, I can believe it.

You saved my vacation shooting in a unique location where repair was impossible. THANK YOU!!!
You're the man! You saved me a lot of time and probably lots of money, when the fixing was so simple ! I'm excited, I'm in vacation in Paris and after 4 days I will be able to take pictures for the last few . Thanks again

Sweet! Happy to help!
Same here! I hadn’t used it for a while and had this issue. Luckily fixed it. Seems like a common issue with this camera?
Wow! Someone asked me to photograph his D600 and I started fiddling with it. Thanks so much! I had this happen 6 weeks ago and have been asking all my photog friends for help with a fix with no luck. The eyeglass screwdriver and a slight pry did the trick!!

Did you get an 'ERR' code on the top display when the mirror was stuck?
WOW. Thank you it worked. My Nikon D80 has sat for a few years and I finally bought a new battery. The mirror worked a few times then stopped. I did slightly pry in the area with much caution. and it released the mirror.

Worked on my D600. The key is to recognize this situation. Put the camera in manual mode, take the lens off, and shoot. You should see the shutter move. If you don't see anything move/cover the sensor, then this fix might be what you need.
I know this video is old but You freakin rock !!!! Saving me grief and money!!!
thanks... its done... 😍❤️ love from bangladesh🇧🇩 ❤️
Thanks for sharing this tip. I got the camera secondhand and thought I’d been sold a lemon. At least it was during a test not real shoot.
Hi I have a Nikon D610. It was working perfectly till today evening. I rented a Nikon 2X tele converter & when I tried with my lenses, I started to see lower part black...I can send you the photo if required...can You tell me what’s the problem and how to fix? Thanks in advance - Imran
Did the problem reappear after several times of use?
Hello! thanks for showing this fix. How to fix it when the mirror goes up but doesnt come down?
Thank you thank you thank you ! You saved me so much stress and money by making this video ! So grateful!

See I have a problem with my d5600, it’s not stuck, it acts like it’s taking a picture but still tells me error shutter release, so do I just lift the mirror a little and try taking a picture to see if it works or?
Worked on my D610. Thank you.
Worked for my D600. Thanks!
Mine is stuck halfway and I'm afraid to do it myself because I might break something but I'll try this one and hope this works.
will this work on my d90? same problem, please help tnx
Hello! My aperture lever is not moving up and down ! How to fix it sir?
Please, what if the aperture thingy is not moving like it should?
I mean the little metal by the left side
i get the press shutter release button again error once i use the quiet shutter mode...the shutter goes up but wont come back down until i press shutter release button again as the error message says...any tips on fixing this??
same problem me too
What if the left part of the shutter is the problem? It doesn't go up and down.
And how can I fix this
Hi. I have d750. Its there any way to change easely the mirror on it?
Awesome. Just what the doctor ordered. Kudos and thanks!
this just happened to me and tried your hack and it fixed the issue thanks for your video
this was a massive help thank u so much!
Thank you so much for this!! Fixed my error message!!
Worked for me like a treat tnx saved the day!
Hi! Do you have any idea about how expensive it is to fix a "stuck" focus motor (the screwdriver)? :( The one of my D750 stays out all the time, even if I change the focus to manual, it's still out instead of inside the body :c
Esse vídeo salvou minha câmera! Pensei que tivesse que trocar o obturador. Uma manobra tão simples, que me salvou aqui! Muito obrigada!
This worked on my D610! Thank you so much!
Hi, do you know if the GPS from Nikon P900 can be removed from camera or not?
Thank you so much!!! I'm back in business!
You are a hero! Thanks a lot for your help
I did it and that fix the same problem on my D610, thank you! :)
My aperture lever doesn't move up and down but my mirror moves fine. Please help
