NEWPORT: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #20 of 172

Welcome to the Wallingfen Way, otherwise known as the B1230. Yeah, I’m the same as you, I think the first name is a bit more catchy, somehow. The B1230 is the road that links this village to Gilberdyke to the West and to North Cave to the East, and all three villages work together to ensure that the road is not seen as a scar on the landscape.
As a result, this village looks very nice! Why shouldn’t it though anyway considering it has a plethora of listed buildings on the sides of the Market Weighton Canal, an 18th century waterway which splits this village in half into the West Side and the East Side - and no, it ain’t exactly the Mississippi (Bonus points if you get that film reference!)
The West has some of the oldest buildings including St Stephens Church which was built purposely on the border between this village and Gilberdyke so that neither village could claim it! There’s also the village hall and the school, whilst the East side has more of the shops and commercial buildings, and a whole lot more residential areas as well.
The canal is by far the focal point of this parish though, as it flows through the village unhindered by roads. The M62 glides effortlessly over it to the North, and alongside the canal you’ll find the old brickworks which has a “Motorway Pond”, a place that keen fishermen can cast their lines. Look out too, for the parish logo - a windmill which no longer exists.
Regardless of whether I’m on the West Side, or the East Side…either way today I’m in NEWPORT.

My grandfather lived down Southfields @15.50 where the Yaris is, till he passed in 1993, look forward to seeing Market Weighton Lock, as it is a popular haunt for a few of us on our bikes, see if you can find the friendly black lab 😀

When I begin NE Lincs. Thatll be when Ive completed Bolsover/Chesterfield/Mansfield. Best guess, a couple maybe three months. I'll purposely make Laceby the first one in NEL! 😁
