Hey! It looks like this has kicked off once again in the algorithm! This was a budget trip from nearly a year ago now. I have other content related to Utah and US stuff as well on their way! Old Text: Wow this kicked off in the past 24 hours! So hello there 👋 I do railfanning for a hobby, and have been doing more vlogging recently. I recently discovered that my phone case reduced the quality of the video quite a bit. So for the next trip I do with Amtrak, it will probably be much better!
Yours is precisely the reason I ride the train, and from the same station in salt lake city. Been doing it every year for more than 10 years. I've considered taking it from SLC to grand Junction, hang out there watching trains, and then take the other home again on the same day.
Nice ride thru my favorite area of Utah, thanks for taking us along. Thistle was at the junction of the D&RG, which terminated South at Marysvale, where l lived for 35 yrs. I remember that day in 1983 when Thistle was buried in a massive landslide. So tragic.
@@eyezak_m lt was a busy Line during the 2 World Wars, Alunite was used for ammunition, it was mined in the mountains near Marysvale. When the line ceased, they tore up the tracks. The Marysvale Depot was leveled in the 1980s.
Totally awesome ride. When I wore a younger man's clothes I came through Green River, Ut on the way to Island in the Sky for Astronomy. Brings back sweet memories of times and friends gone by. Peace and safety on your travels.
The Thistle landslide in Utah in April 1983 is the most expensive landslide in US history, causing an estimated $200-$400 million in damage in 1983 dollars.
Green River, Utah appears to be physically the closest Amtrak station to Arches National Park and Moab, Utah, but it looks like it might be difficult to get a rental car there.
If you're from Europe, this is a bad idea. As was said, some towns are too small to even have rental car centers out in the west, like Elko Nevada or Green River Utah. Just Fly in as close as you can get and rent a car to drive the rest of the way when it comes to national parks in southern Utah
Cool shots throughout! When I can't get all the way to Chicago from MSP I take the Empire Builder into Wisconsin & back in a day. The new Borealis train helps get my trips accomplished, too.
I do searches for driving to Green River and taking Amtrak to Denver. The next day this fun video is recommended. Well done Google. Maybe I should take the train instead of driving.
For your next trip you might consider getting off in Helper. There is a great museum there, when I was there they had a huge model railroad setup. That was 25 or so years ago, so the railroad may be gone. I did google the museum and it is still there.
This was GREAT! Found you thanks to @buildingsaltlake convo about Utah Department of Transportation’s (UDOT) lack of understanding of passenger rail regarding a disparaging comment made by UDOT executive director Carlos Braceras following the UTA event. During the question and answer session following the panel discussion, local transit and intercity passenger rail photographer Isaac Madsen mentioned his recent UA-cam video titled “Taking Amtrak to Green River, Utah and back for no reason.” Apparently, hearing about someone riding Amtrak purely for fun prompted Carlos Braceras to state that Isaac “Must not have much going on in his life.” 🙄😑 What a jerk. Anyway! Glad I found you! Happy rails 🛤️🚂
If you like trains go to Europe. I suggest Switzerland. Trains to the right of you trains to the left every few minutes. Trains right to the Zurich and Geneva airport. Full gauge narrow gauge cog 🚂.😊
I want to go from Sacramento to grand junction. Get a rental car and go on the dragon Silverton train. I've done Sacramento to Granby, rental car to west rocky mountain National Park 6 times
@@jameswest8280 I do think that’s weird! I was pretty desperate too! I wonder why anyone would tell me that? I hope it wasn’t because I was wearing a mask
Lucky you didn’t get stranded there in G River. Amtrak not too dependable on that route. Tried similar turn-around from Ogden to Rawlings WY & back in early 8Os when 5&6 ran through WY. It went bad! Got to Rawlings only to learn #5 wasn’t coming through due to bridge washout somewhere (?). Train #6 conductor said to take return ticket to Greyhound and exchange for bus. Walked short ways to bus stop and wouldn’t you know-there sat a west/bound bus ready to leave. Driver took ticket and off we went back by bus to SLC then long wait for bus north to Ogden. Thanks Amtrak for the adventure.
I planned for significant delays like that. Had a backup bus route to Salt Lake if I had to. But yeah, sometimes things like that happen. Thankfully, not as often as it can feel.
In 5 hours of sitting in green river, did any other trains go through? Or is the mainline pretty much only used by Amtrak and an odd BNSF periodically?
I m going to LA on the Coast Starlight this Saturday returning Thursday also on the CSvand hopefully if the wetter is good Southwest Chief ABQ to LA and CS to San. Jose. The Diridon Station is cool and I am connected with Rid Diridon Sr.who the station is named after.
Why BNSF trains? Well the Rio Grande merged with the southern Pacific. Then the SP merged with the UP. As a condition of that the BNSF got trackage rights on the old Rio Grande line. For the Union Pacific this route is inferior to their mainline across Wyoming. But for BNSF it gives a chance to offer an alternative solution for Denver to Utah traffic.
Kind of exactly the reason why many just view Amtrak as a money pit in trying to subsidize the service for a handful of people it costs millions of dollars.

I have family history tied to that railroad branch. I'm sad I'll never get to see it

You had a reason, you like trains. Looks like you were lucky; no dirty windows. Nice video

Green River, Utah appears to be physically the closest Amtrak station to Arches National Park and Moab, Utah, but it looks like it might be difficult to get a rental car there.
It's a very small town. You probably wouldn't take Amtrak to get to Moab unless you're meeting other people at the station

We stopped for the night in Green River in November 2005, when driving from Iowa to California for Thanksgiving. Amazing scenery.
Not a gas station for miles in some sections of i70
@@Mcfunface yes, the last part of i70 before turning south towards las Vegas is quite desolated. Beautiful drive.
i considered doing this exact trip a year ago lol, for the same reasons.

Very nice video, and the sort of trip which I might try, since we live in Grand Junction. Video probably should have been edited down to 8-10 minutes
This was a longer form video experiment. I have a previous video that is on the complete opposite end. Will see what is the best in the middle

The one reason why Amtrak needs to come during the day the nature is beautiful
In 5 hours of sitting in green river, did any other trains go through? Or is the mainline pretty much only used by Amtrak and an odd BNSF periodically?
No other trains while I was in Green River. Route is owned by Union Pacific
