- In Episode 08 of the Quest for Perfection on the 1997 BMW E36 M3 sedan, we tackle the interior courtesy and map lights and give them a LED upgrade to brighten things up and give the car a more modern nighttime appearance. There are about a dozen bulbs in the interior, depending on your specific E36 and configuration, with two bulb types -- festoon and bayonet style. We replace each bulb one by one as I make a few mistakes along the way and run into a mini fustercluck about 90% of the way to completion. Fortunately, I was able to track the problem down to a bad fuse. Replacing the fuse fixed my inoperable LED interior lights and also correct a OBC taillight failure message for the driver's taillight bulb.
LED bulbs with CANBUS support will not throw errors to the BMW OBC and are safe to use if you purchase the proper bulbs for your installation. LED bulbs are much brighter, give off a modern white light as opposed to the older amber light, and run much cooler than OEM bulbs and should never overheat. They also last much longer and may never need replacing as long as you own your BMW.

When you spend 20 minutes getting the c-pillar light assembly out, how about showing us the clips? Maybe explain what you are doing occasionally - it might help others.
Love how you keep it real.
The LEDs make a big difference. I really like them.
Wow. Just stumbled over this. Love your videos. Also own a E36 M3 Evo. Thank you
I used the same bulbs and replaced all the interior lights to LED after reupholstering headliner.
The long bulb in the dome light will eventually pop out even after I made the tension tight as possible. I thought about soldering it in but it need to swivel to enter the slit in the housing. My lowered car is bumpy and the bulb has popped out once. Fingers crossed it stays in this time.
Update or tips to keep them in?
I eventually used a rubber band to squeeze the two ends together
keep up the good work man!
Oh man the same exact thing happened to me while watching you and replacing my bulbs. I should’ve watched it in its entirety first before I started. 😬 now I have a blown fuse.
Classy
Thanks Chris// I agree with below .. thanks for keeping it real! W.
Anyone know what size led's these are? is it 2 x 36mm Festoon, 2 x 42mm Festoon, and 6 x 1156?? or are they 1157....
You really captured the amazingly annoying sound of the BMW chime. I guess every car is annoying but maybe it's just so familiar... Can you list the various types of bulbs used? Specifically looking for the map lights.
i have an e36 318i and i want to do a conversion of the C-Pillar housing to the ones that you have but im guessing that there has to be additional wiring done to make it happen?
Hm. I switched the C pillar door activity lights but the same bulbs didnt work on the dome map lights or the secondary C pillar lights. Anyone know if they are different?
I'm having the same issue with a '98 328is, did you ever solve this?
What is the size of that centre bulb?
I’m having an issue trying to find the best white led lights for my license plate without having the in dash CPU give me an error code
Have you tried these: bimmian.com/led-license-plate-illumination-upgrade-for-e36/
I have the same problem when I did my trunk one I thought it was just me being stupid. My trunk lights been on forever I just don't feel like checking the fuses right now. And I had the dash sayingbthe trunk was open all my lights went out as well
