It's a propriatary mobo so any replacement will have to be another Alienware motherboard. The R6 and R7 mobos might fit in here if you're looking to upgrade but I'm not 100% sure of that. These Alienwares use a special connector for the front power button which won't work with other branded motherboards.

haha yeah it gets a bit ridiculous. These Alienwares weren't the best for upgrades to modern graphics cards unfortunately. I still love the style of this R5.
I have this exact model that I have and I made some minor upgrades to already. Question: everywhere I look online suggests I'm stuck with the motherboard and 6700k CPU, BUT they've also said the best one can do with the GPU is a 2070 super and you proved that wrong. Do you think there is some way to upgrade the CPU or am I stuck?
The CPU is spec'd to a certain socket and I don't believe that any generation other than 6th gen i3, i5, i7 will fit that socket. So, unfortunately, you are most likely limited CPU wise. As for GPU, as long as you take wattage and size into account, you can use anything you want. In the video here I took wattage into account with the 850w PSU but I clearly didn't take size into account, hence the riser cable.
@@TaylorBrauer After leaving my comment, I did another info search and saw that the socket is LPA 1151. I looked up what the best processors are at this size and found that there is an Intel Core i9-9900K sized this way. Do you think it would work or will it crash and burn?
@@Pudsports tbh, I don’t know. You might have to do some digging to find someone who’s successfully done it before, if you’re on the fence about attempting it yourself.
If you don't already have an SSD or NVME drive installed I'd start there. That's going to give you the most performance upgrade. There's also RAM, CPU and Graphics Card upgrades. Those might or might not require upgrading the PSU though. Dell has great documentation for these Alienwares which should give you a lot more info on what's possible with upgrades. Good luck!
Hi please answer my question I'm late to this but do you think it's safe to leave gpu outside case?I want to upgrade my gpu but it's too big I don't mind being outside the case at since I don't care about no rgb light or any of that stuff I can just sit the gpu on top of a box like you did in the video? Is it safe some say no but realistically speaking is it???
It's as safe as a GPU being on the outside of your case. Which is to say, having this as a long term solution is risky especially if you can have things that can spill or fall on the GPU. If it was me, I'd keep to GPUs that fit inside the case.
Supposedly you can install Win11 if you just do a clean install (no upgrade from Win10. Your key should transfer over, but honestly just get a pro key and bake the drivers in with microwin

Luckily, Dell has some great documentation that should give you exact dimensions of card that will fit in the R9. Docs are on the support page and just enter your service tag. I'd recommend getting a card that fits to those specs, and perhaps more importantly, a card that is within the limits of your power supply. I wouldn't recommend getting an extender for using a card outside the case.
Luckily, the R5 through like R9 have compatibility between themselves because they have similar chassis. Search for what you have along with what you're looking for and I'm sure you'll find compatible options.
@@dazios6874 I'm not sure. I only looked for the Dell/Alienware PSUs as they have the right cable lengths and some cables are proprietary. I def think you run into issues with a regular PSU that isn't for that exact Alienware generation.

Yo I really need somone like u (who daily drives an Aurora r5 and smart) idk if I have a r5 r6 r7 or r8 can u tell me the diffrence please ? also how do u get the cpu gpu temps and usage percent on the top left ?
There should be a service tag on the back that you can enter on Dell's website and view the specs for the system. If you don't find it on the back it's also listed in the BIOS. That stats display is coming from MSI Afterburner. It's a GPU tweaking program but it has a on screen display for stats in the settings.

@@TaylorBrauer It would require custom water blocks for the GPU and CPU. Which a company that's well know makes. The water pump can be placed anywhere.. I would use soft tubes for flexibility and have custom metal brackets for the pump. Not sure but it's pretty easy to crack open to check.
It's crazy no one is talking about upgrading their r6. It whether r5 or r7. There must be something with the r6....
with what are u doing that overlay while gaming to check the system workload?
It's called CapFrameX which leverages RivaTuner. It's got tons of customizations for on screen display.
Friend, my motherboard was damaged. I have an Aurora R5. I want to know what motherboard do you recommend to put in that tower? I'm thinking of buying the MSI Gaming Intel B250 LGA 1151, I'm not sure I'll buy it because I think it won't have enough space to put it.
It's a propriatary mobo so any replacement will have to be another Alienware motherboard. The R6 and R7 mobos might fit in here if you're looking to upgrade but I'm not 100% sure of that. These Alienwares use a special connector for the front power button which won't work with other branded motherboards.
@@TaylorBrauer thanks for the information friend
4060TI fits as well I test it out double performance compared to my 1080
That’s good to know. The 4060ti is a powerful little card.
A 650W power supply will also work.
havent finished yet but you mentioned if I want to play modern warfare or how about the latest COD I need 1904? Mine does say 1904 in the version number, still an A%. Do you think I should upgrade to this 4070 or just go for a new PC? thanks great info...Oh wow now I'm at the part where you are changing the power supply, 850 sheesh that seems high...Upgrading the ram, then the fan doesnt fit! Ya nevermind lol I'll buy a new PC
haha yeah it gets a bit ridiculous.
You might have to do some digging to find someone who’s successfully done it before, if you’re on the fence about attempting it yourself.
hey youre really smart, any ideas what upgrades i can make to my aurora r6
i have no idea where to start. i wanna make it the best i can
If you don't already have an SSD or NVME drive installed I'd start there.
It's a bios limitation which is much tricker. Dell didn't add the fTPM workaround to these motherboards.
@@TaylorBrauer I see… how irresponsible of them 😂 I wonder what other mods are possible, like adding Thunderbolt. There is what appears to be a TBT header but the pins aren’t soldered on… if that is a standard 5pin, perhaps a maple ridge card could be installed
I have an R9 with a 2080super want to install a 4070tisuper what do you suggest? im not sure if it will fit where did you get the extender. Pls i need help
I have an alienware aurora r7 as my pc what upgrades would work in it to get a stable 240 fps in fortnite
How do I know what psu to get. I’m trying to find a 550 watt but I don’t know what will fit
Luckily, the R5 through like R9 have compatibility between themselves because they have similar chassis. Search for what you have along with what you're looking for and I'm sure you'll find compatible options.
@@TaylorBrauer does it use a standard atx psu?
@@dazios6874 I'm not sure. I only looked for the Dell/Alienware PSUs as they have the right cable lengths and some cables are proprietary. I def think you run into issues with a regular PSU that isn't for that exact Alienware generation.
Does the cpu makes the system bottleneck? the gpu is overkill for the cpu
Yes, the cpu bottlenecks. I knew it was going to be a bottleneck going in but I was curious hehe.
@@TaylorBrauer Anyway thanks for your video. I also have Aurora r5. Despite the bottleneck issue, you proof that GPU upgrade will improve the performance.
@@Chrisdian7 Yw! Have a good one.
It's a GPU tweaking program but it has a on screen display for stats in the settings.
instead of a gpu upgrade why not platform upgrade? pretty sure for tha money spent on the 4070 TI u could've gotten a newer Intel platform or even amd. EDIT..... after checking ur channel out i see it was mainly a test, as u have a 7800x3d and 13600k on aswell. SRRY bout that
No worries. I appreciate the feedback. You're right, if I wasn't doing an experiment the better choice would be looking to upgrade the mobo, processor, and ram.
A crazy idea would to be watercool and Aurora R8 I've searched all the cross UA-cam and no one has ever even attempted it.
That's a good idea. It's tricky given that the inside is so compact.
@@TaylorBrauer It would require custom water blocks for the GPU and CPU. Which a company that's well know makes. The water pump can be placed anywhere..
I would use soft tubes for flexibility and have custom metal brackets for the pump. Also would cut out the top of the case out so I could at least put a two fan radiator in there(if possible)
The size of the GPU would be greatly reduced since you only need the chip cooled and you won't need fans for it.
I have and aurora R8 myself and always wanted to custom water cool it. Went looking on UA-cam see if anyone has attempted it but found nothing..
So I think I'll try it myself when it get time.
But could be a great idea for a UA-cam video though my help your channel grow..
@@vlossgaming533 Oh dang you've thought about this. You should give it a go if it's a project you really care about. If I had the skillset I'd try it. That's a bit advanced for my desktop customizing skills. I would like to try a custom loop in a larger case to get my feet wet.
What is the overlay you are using to see the output measurements?
I'm using a tool called CapFrameX.
what's the best gpu i can upgrade to without getting a new power supply?
The power supply I pulled from this Alienware is 460w so any combination of hardware that falls below that. Check how much wattage your power supply can support.
@@TaylorBrauer thanks for the reply, I'm a noob. What's the thing that you used that showed all the data like the fps and other stuff?
@@jeffyou7594 Yw! It's called CapFrameX. You'll have to install RTSS (the Rivatuner stats app) to get the overlay to show up. It's a pretty nice software that can also record graphs for a bunch of stuff.
@@TaylorBrauer ok ty!
Im quite confused, ive ran pcs with 4th gen and no gou and theve updated later than than build and ive had windows 11 running fine and updating
In the case of the R5, like I have here, Alienware never released a fTPM bios update to the system so it's not compatible with Windows 11. I couldn't even get the latest version of Windows 10 working on it because one (or more) of drivers is incompatible with later versions of Windows 10.
Bro thank you for upgrade the gpu and power supply and that was good. But can you play game on your. Pc😊

Yes, that’s correct. Not sure what’s not fair as there isn’t any rules lol.
Wait you can install a 4060ti with 460w psu? Interesting

Exactly.
It’s crazy because I think you are cpu bottle knecked now. Could get more with a new cpu I would inagjne
Oh definitely. That 6700 can't keep up. It's more of an upgrade to step up the CPU because of the mobo replacement required. I believe this series of Alienware went up to 9th gen Intels.

Do u think this processor can handle a rx 6600? I’m stuck with this pc for now and I could get a rx 6600 for 100$ from my friend. Currently have a gtx 1070
I don't know anything about the rx6600 to give you a solid answer but as long as it's got the right PCIe port, power delivery within PSUs spec, and it will fit the dimensions of the case then it should be fine.
