Some of the earliest coins are made from electrum (gold / silver alloy) and have great designs, let's take a closer look.
Note: everytime I say "el hecte", pretend I am just saying "hecte"
hecte, hectae, hectai, hekte....it's spelled many different ways.
Here are some more image examples from NGC: www.ngccoin.com/news/article/...

Thanks! I collect ancients and love seeing good content on UA-cam about them. I have a couple of 1/24ths from Lydia. Love those coins!

Very nice compilation of ancient Greek Electrum coins ! But: if you like to collect those, you are entering a minefield, because there are tons of counterfeits in the international markets. So I hope that NGC gives not only a grading but also the guarantee that they are genuine. Greets from GER, U.

Authentication is part of the grading process for PCGS and NGC. So yes, they are making sure it is real and not some high quality fake. That being said, fakes can get through even with experts.

@@ClassicalNumismatics That is why I said even with experts fakes get through. But they do look for fakes in the grading process. Many a gold coin has come back in a body bag from the grading services.

About the Lesbos Hecte coin: the Cabeiri were possibly originally Phrygian deities and protectors of sailors, who were imported into Greek ritual. In Greek mythology, Persephone also called Kora is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter. She became the queen of the underworld after her abduction by Hades, the god of the underworld, with the approval of her father, Zeus. (wikipedia)
Another explanation: THE KABEIROI (Cabeiri) were twin gods (daimones) who presided over the orgiastic dances of the mysteries of Samothrake (Samothrace) which were held in honour of the goddesses Demeter, Persephone, and Hekate. They were famed metal-workers, dwarfish sons of the god Hephaistos (Hephaestus), who served their father at his Lemnian forge. Like their mother Kabeiro (Cabeiro) the pair were also sea-divinities who came to the aid of sailors in distress. Because they were twin gods, that could explain the 2 stars.

Just curious, how much did you pay? If a hecate is around 300, 1200 for a stater would be expected (unless they are way more common of course).

CROESIS GOLD is a book which examines the wealth of the king of Lydia ( a part of Mesopotamia.) Flush with alluvial gold found in 3 rivers which ran through Lydia, No doubt he was one of the wealthiest leaders of the era.
Following the use of electrum gold was separated from the silver by hammering it flat, and heating it and covering it with salt. The salt caused a chemical reaction forming oxides with the non gold elements (silver, lead and others.) this was done many times, each time the resulting hammered gold was more pure until purity of 98-99% gold was achieved.

I bough a coin in an NGC holder that had a price sticker that was mostly pealed off. i took soap and water to clean it off and got most of it then I used windex which made the plactic have a fog then I used goo gone made it way worse then I read tooth paste and a tooth brush worked but it didnt I ended up using a head light repair kit recommended by my LCS. It came out super nice!! Just wondering what you guys used to clean slabs if anything!!??

Never heard of Electrum. Amazing to imagine what the history of these exact coins were thousands of years ago. If only we knew the hands that exchanged them, clipped them, what was bought and traded with them. If only coins could tell stories. Like those classy ancient labels NGC uses too.
