I find Nick Cave to be such a sincere and beautiful person. To be honest, I'm a little envious of his thoughtfulness and intellect, something that obviously didn't just come to him but rather something he has obviously been thinking about for probably all his life

It's so incredible to see these two brilliant artists together. I value both their works and thoughts about the world so much. It's wonderful to hear the direct answers to questions, in a semi-discussion format-- I think the answers are more open with less one-on-one interview pressure. Man, what I would give to share bottle of wine or three with these fucking beautiful men; and talk about the world, life, anything!... Thanks for sharing this wonderful video. Fuels lots of great thought.

Cave succinctly clarifies his feelings about Australia here ... he lives in England because on some Ancestral level, it is genuinely the natural home - Genetic memory is a very real thing. In England where his ancestors and the majority of Australian peoples ancestors come from - Britain is their place of origin - their homeland. Nick feels acutely foreign in Australia and is therefore intimidated by the prospect of being there ... he doesn't dislike or hate Australia - it simply alienates him on some deep level - and he's not alone.

Why aren't all Australians except Aboriginals alienated?
And why stop at England as your home, why not Normandy or Denmark or maybe further back; all our ancestors came from some shithole in Africa, why not there

It’s amazing how much Wim Wenders’ voice sounds like a gentle version of Werner Herzog.

Modern society has completely lost its ability to have a civilized conversation like this. No one clamouring to be the most outrageous. No one being provoking other than speaking their minds....which is hugely provocative in today’s post-covid world of censorship and hurt feelings.

Violence that delivers justice is quite appealing in my opinion. A movie in which the bad guys are obliterated is very satisfying. Of course their has to be acts of unjust violence to establish who the bad guys are, to strip them of their humanity and show them as monsters worthy of distruction.

Interesting interview, however violence is everywhere, unfortunate. Wars are the essence of violence as we all know that's been around forever. Germany elected a Nazi overwhelmingly knew what he stood for and then denied at the end.I have German relatives who voted for Hitler, they have passed, but they did.Had family in both the German and American armies in WWII. Nick Cave's mind is scary playground, still is and there's nothing wrong with that. During WWII my german grandmother who lived in Monterey, CA was heard merely speaking German over the phone in 1943. Someone heard her called the FBI two days later a long black car showed up to her shop on Cannery Row picked her up questioned her for two days if she had any affiliation to Adolph Hitler. Hit her with a phone book, she never broke. She wasn't but violence was and is everywhere. She never spoke German again until the war was over.

i feel like i need to correct you on a factual point there. a majority of germans never voted for hitler. about a third did, and - as with, say, trump - most of them did not realize what violence that would involve. his party was part of a larger coalition of conservative forces that were eager to make use of his relative popularity to consolidate power. he assumed absolute power not by some popular vote victory, but by a coup/misuse of a state of emergency after the burning of the reichstag.

@The Chicago Goblin you're not being a very faithful reader of my comment. the deplorable state of US foreign policy (both during and after the Trump presidency) wasn't really the point I was making - although i agree with you that it is deplorable. The point i was making was a purely historical one: most germans never voted for Hitler. As goes also for trump.
If i may give you my two cents as an outsider to US politics, you seem like you're rather intent on only recognizing violence as such when it's perpetrated by people you don't like, which i find typical, but quite weird. As if the deplorable policies of the democrats somehow cancel out the pursuit of white supremacy that Trump proudly championed, which, surely, also perpetuates horrific violence.

The movie about peace is a really good one "war movie".
By showing the utter and senseless violence of war, what better movie to promote peace?

12 Comments ?? WTF?? This makes me want to go out and break someone’s kneecaps!
All fooling aside I’m quite surprised this interview only has 13 comments considering the important subject matter and the Really Qualified interviewees. If this would’ve aired in the US on say the Oprah show or one of the others it would have 2-3000 comments, and probably fairly Heated I’d bet. Makes me realize how much violence we are accustomed to in the States compared to the UK or Europe.
I live in Oakland and have been Jumped on the street, Attacked at knifepoint at the frontdoor of my work, Robbed at gunpoint outside of a cornerstore while going to get a drink, Pulled out of my Car and Mob-Rushed by (4) 17-18 year olds before ending up in the Emergency Ward besides the Dozens of Times I was able to de-fuse a conflict before it developed into a fight. AND I’M A 6FT 240 LB MAN. Around here we are just inured to this lifestyle. I’m not proud of this. It’s definitely the Main Downside to life in this otherwise beautiful place... Well, that and the Very High Cost of Living.

I am an admirer of both these men, but I think I disagree with both of them when it comes to violence and art. I would submit that a film like "Saving Private Ryan" does the diametric opposite of what they say violent art does - especially if like me you studied the First World War and read Paul Fussell's books. That film like no other, because of the director's profound attention to the truth, has to compel any and all thoughtful human beings far away from any notion of violence. My grandfather was in the US 20th Armored Division who freed the Jewish prisoners at Dachau on 29 April 1945, and his stories informed me in such a way that I am unable to be "excited" by violence in the the way that Cave describes. Sorry Nick.

I believe the Nick Cave today (2023) agrees with your feeing re: violence, verses the Nick Cave at the time of this interview. He addresses this same issue in his Red Hand files letters; a change brought about by the death of his son. I also am aligned with your feeling.
