Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.
The musical opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles, and there have been dozens of productions worldwide since then. Now in its 35th record-breaking year, The Phantom of the Opera continues to captivate audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End, after more than 11,000 performances.

*me watching this*
*brother walks by*
Brother: Only in operas will someone sing while they are being strangled....
I love how the Phantom is pretty much choking her boyfriends and Christine's standing there just like 'Nope... Not getting wet'
I love how the Phantom is getting more rope to kill Raoul and Christine is just singing away :P
"..and turn to tears of HATE" gives me chills. Every. Stinking. Time.
Next time I have two gorgeous men willing to fight to the death over me, I'll definitely start singing!
This is so heart breaking for everyone in this scene. I love how raoul sings "I tried so hard to free you" and Christine sings "angel of music you decieved me". So much emotion.
When he refers to "freeing her", I think he means "freeing her" more as in he's freed her from the pain and loneliness she felt after he father died because she's loved by him now.
Basically, Phantom tells Christine if she doesn't marry him then he will kill Raoul and Raoul tells her not to pick the Phantom and throw her life away with someone she doesn't truly love. And Christine is begging Phantom not to kill him or make her do this.
Excuse me? That's the beauty of it. If Christine took one more step, Rauol would be dead. Just enjoy the marvelous tragedy, and stop pointing out stupid remarks. Its beautiful.
The harmony in this scene is beautiful!! It is so perfectly written and the singers are fantastic!! Especially Gerard Butler!! Love him :-)
I love the way she sings "the tears I might have shed for your dark fate, grow cold and turn to tears of HATE!!!" I love POTO
on 0:40 if Raoul and Eric start to sing together it sounds so amazing!
This scene is so sad :(
i feel sorry for each of them,
Raoul: he loves christine and wants to save her
Eric: He s just so poor, and it seems nothing good ever happens to him
Christine: She likes the phantom, but she just loves Raoul more :'(
this is one of the very few things wich make me cry, but i love it so much i've known poto for more than 15 years now :)
I love all 3 of them singing at the same time. It's beautiful.
I love how Phantom remains pretty much nameless in this movie. Despite how much he seems like some magical being in the beginning, and how he doesn't have a name, he still seems so human at the end.
HAHAHA in real life everyone would be like. "WHY ARE WE SINGING!!?"
This is... SPARTA!!!
Oooooo Patrick Wilson as Raoul - so perfect. I get tears in my eyes from all the emotion in his voice and expression.
I love Emmy's Anger face when she sings TEARS OF HAAAATTEEE!! She's was an amazing Christine on screen!!
This wedding gown was gorgeous, best seamter unknown.
i actually like raoul in this scene
I could watch this over and over just for when Raoul sings at 1:06
"I fought so hard to free you...". Really Raoul? You walked down a couple of passages and then forgot the ONLY piece of advice you were given because you were distracted by a gate.
When Raoul says "I fought so hard to free you" I just flipping DIE!
I actually do like Raoul but that's just because the phantom KILLS PEOPLE!
I did it all for you and all for nothing!
Too late for turning back, too late for prayers and useless pity!!
Either way you choose, you cannot win!!!
Sends chills up my spine.
i will laugh at the emotions and melodrama in any tear-jerker romance. but i will NEVER.LAUGH.AT.PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.
I swear this part tears out my heart and tramples all over it.
Seeing them beside each other like that, and the broken passion...ug.
Then I remember that Phantom/Erik is played Gerard Butler..and everything he does becomes okay...
HAAATTE *shiver* such strong feelings in this sooongg!!! I love it
i love emmy she is so beautiful and she has such a beautiful voice
He fell asleep trying to guard her
3-part arguing in song; could there be anything more romantic?
I think Christine has the best opening line ever in this song.
Raoul: I fought so hard to free you.
OMG! so touching!
You know its gonna be okay when Raoul starts singing. And continues to sing for a while.
It's so amazing how those three songs go together perfectly -3
This is my favorite scene out of the whole movie! I get tears in my eyes every time i watch it :')
"I fought so hard to free you" and yet my sister and I count the seconds as he falls down the stair trap after only a minute from parting with that one lady.
I am a guy and this is certainly my favorite movie and it forever will be. It is absolutely brilliant and gets me every time.
Definitely! Way more emotion, but I feel like this gave it an eerily beautiful sense.
...Am I the only one who watched the 25th but still prefers this?
I can't help thinking that this would have been over a lot quicker if Christine had just decked the Phantom before he got to Raoul. Boom, Phantom is unconscious and gets the message that you don't love him and you get to escape with Raoul. Instead of just standing there like an idiot... though, then there wouldn't be this beautiful song.
Love this scene....so much passion and energy
The Phantom's name is Erik!!!
i think im the only guy here.
I like all of them! Why hate one character?!?!
She knows her voice can pacify him...which it did for the moment. By the way...did you notice there is no Erik in ALW's version of POTO...it's always "the masked madman' or "that vile creature" or "angel of music".
Definitely the best part of the movie musically.
Goose bumps. Enough said.
when i first watch this scene, i was crying. but after i read your comment, i was laughing like hell. lol!
Great scene
"May your Angel of Music watch over you now..."
Raoul is the most counter productive hero ever.
I think Roaul disliked this becuz the phantom was wearing the same shirt as him and he was tied up Hahahaha :) XD
I love the "TEARS OF HATE" line Christine sings. Especially because she that's one of the moments she can really express her anger. She is saying to the Phantom "Go to hell! Fuck off!! Get out of my life! You've treated me in ways I did not want to be! I'M DONE WITH YOU! You're an Angel of Hell!!"
25th anniversary cast for the win!!!!
I dont know how sastifying it would really be for the Phantom if she lied and married him... He would know she never loved him.
They should do another theatrical film with Ramin and Sierra :)
THANK YOU!!!! I thought I was the only one...
1:12 looks like that hurts JUST a little...
Yes, that is the Phantoms name.
is there a lyrics video for this?
Because every girl wants a psychotic murderer for a husband. -_-
"The Confrontation" in Les Miz. Classic.
AMEN!
yep.....I'm crying. If she doesn't want the Phantom than give me the ring! I'll take him.
Does anyone else think these all sound higher than normal? I played this at the same time as the recording from the soundtrack and this sounded markably higher.
You are so right! Where is the desperation, passion and anger here? After seeing Ramin, Sierra and Hadley perform this scene, the film is a pale imitation of what it should be!
Why is Christine afraid of going into the water?
I had love-to-hate/hate-to-love relationship with Phanthom... he so attractive yet so psycho
Raoul is better looking when his hair is wet.
When you finish this look up the phantom of the opera ytp
i so would take the Phantom
His name is Erik
that's what I do.
¡¡¡ Épico!!!
yep yep, chimed into it too or along with ya, I wouldn't mind it either!
in the book, but 90% of the characters in this are completely different from the book, in the book Buquet isn't even seen alive and he isn't a letch. They wanted him to remain nameless in the movie.
classic song I'm gonna be honest though this scene seemed a lot more intense in the play rather than in the movie....
THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I'VE BEEN THINKING!!!
my favorite scene in the movie *u*
"Why do you curse mercy?" I believe (:
Farewell my fallen idol and false friend...
Actually, Christine is at least in her late teens (we never actually know her age in the book), so technically that would make him a hebephile.
I still honestly get confused at this part, anyone like to explain it to me?
Does anyone know what this actual style of music is called where multiple people sing different lyrics at the same time like this? Or have another example of it?
Eric??
The 25th anniversary was SO much better. I can't believe I liked this movie at one point!!!! WHHHHY!!!!!!?
Heelium!
Pause @ 0:13
What does she say after "angel of music, who deserves this"..... ?????
same here :P
wherefore or how come though sayest it or this? I don't get it...
and that is why he's the real villain and christine SHOULD HAVE CHOSE THE PHANTOM!!
I don't understand why they didn't make his face more deformed in the movie! This face is not in any compare to the musicalversion!
Being chocked to death, yet you still hit every note. Crying and you also hit the notes. And than trying to win her over by using her boyfriend hostage... Logical huh? :P
I believe it's called "counterpoint" style. =)
This one's smart. What other see a phantom you see the king of Sparta huh?
Love hate and a face not even a mother could love
I love raoul
