  • We will look at the Indian lawyer, economist, politician, and tireless advocate for social justice Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, his career and influence, and in particular his development of a new Buddhist path in so-called "Navayāna" Buddhism or "the New Vehicle". We will see how it differs from traditional early Buddhist belief and practice, and how it is aimed at improving the situation of the most impoverished in India and around the world.

"In the Hindu religion, one can[not] have freedom of speech. A Hindu must surrender his freedom of speech. He must act according to the Vedas. If the Vedas do not support the actions, instructions must be sought from the Smritis, and if the Smritis fail to provide any such instructions, he must follow in the footsteps of the great men. He is not supposed to reason. Hence, so long as you are in the Hindu religion, you cannot expect to have freedom of thought."
"It must be borne in mind that although there are castes among Non-Hindus, as there are among Hindus, caste has not the same social significance for Non-Hindus as it has for Hindus. Ask a Mohammedan or a Sikh who he is. He tells you that he is a Mohammedan or a Sikh, as the case may be. He does not tell you his caste, although he has one; and you are satisfied with his answer. When he tells you that he is a Muslim, you do not proceed to ask him whether he is a Shiya or a Suni; Sheikh or Saiyad; Khatik or Pinjari. When he tells you he is a Sikh, you do not ask him whether he is Jat or Roda, Mazbi or Ramdasi. But you are not satisfied, if a person tells you that he is a Hindu. You feel bound to inquire into his caste. Why? Because so essential is caste in the case of a Hindu, that without knowing it you do not feel sure what sort of a being he is."

      Dr. B.R. Ambedkar quotes
      On Hinduism and caste
"The first and foremost thing that must be recognised is that Hindu Society is a myth. The name Hindu is itself a foreign name. It was given by the Mohammedans to the natives for the purpose of distinguishing themselves [from them]. It does not occur in any Sanskrit work prior to the Mohammedan invasion. They did not feel the necessity of a common name, because they had no conception of their having constituted a community. Hindu Society as such does not exist. It is only a collection of castes. Each caste is conscious of its existence. Its survival is the be-all and end-all of its existence. Castes do not even form a federation. A caste has no feeling that it is affiliated to other castes, except when there is a Hindu-Muslim riot. On all other occasions each caste endeavours to segregate itself and to distinguish itself from other castes."
"The world owes much to rebels who would dare to argue in the face of the pontiff and insist that he is not infallible. I do not care about the credit which every progressive society must give to its rebels. I shall be satisfied if I make the Hindus realise that they are the sick men of India, and that their sickness is causing danger to the health and happiness of other Indians."
"Each caste not only dines among itself and marries among itself, but each caste prescribes its own distinctive dress. What other explanation can there be of the innumerable styles of dress worn by the men and women of India, which so amuse the tourists? Indeed the ideal Hindu must be like a rat living in his own hole, refusing to have any contact with others. There is an utter lack among the Hindus of what the sociologists call "consciousness of kind." There is no Hindu consciousness of kind. In every Hindu the consciousness that exists is the consciousness of his caste. That is the reason why the Hindus cannot be said to form a society or a nation."
"Anyone who relies on an attempt to turn the members of the caste Hindus into better men by improving their personal character is in my judgment wasting his energy and bugging an illusion."
"The Hindus criticise the Mohammedans for having spread their religion by the use of the sword. They also ridicule Christianity on the score of the Inquisition. But really speaking, who is better and more worthy of our respect--the Mohammedans and Christians who attempted to thrust down the throats of unwilling persons what they regarded as necessary for their salvation, or the Hindu who would not spread the light, who would endeavour to keep others in darkness, who would not consent to share his intellectual and social inheritance with those who are ready and willing to make it a part of their own make-up? I have no hesitation in saying that if the Mohammedan has been cruel, the Hindu has been mean; and meanness is worse than cruelty."
"To put the matter in general terms, Hinduism and social union are incompatible. By its very genius Hinduism believes in social separation, which is another name for social disunity and even creates social separation. If Hindus wish to be one, they will have to discard Hinduism. They cannot be one without violating Hinduism. Hinduism is the greatest obstacle to Hindu Unity. Hinduism cannot create that longing to belong which is the basis of all social unity. On the contrary Hinduism creates an eagerness to separate.

Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumoured by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.

On 13th October 1956 before the day of Buddhist Conversion Ceremony, Dr. Ambedkar was interviewed by an English newspaper called “Hitawada”.
Hitawada representive :- “Will the Neo-Buddhists follow traditional Buddhism or follow a religion that is in harmony with modern conditions?”
Dr. Ambedkar :- They will follow the religion that the Buddha taught himself. They will not engage themselves in the differences of Buddhism. Because that led to the creation of the Mahayana and Vajrayana or other similar sects. This is a type of a Navayana (New Vehicle) only.
Again after the day of Buddhist Conversion Ceremony, he was interviewed by well known Maharashtrian Novelist Gajanan Tryambak Madkholkar at Sham Hotel, Nagpur.
Madkholkar said, “I think what you said yesterday will not be liked by the traditional Buddhist Scholar’s.”
Ambedkar replied, “I never say anything to be liked or unliked by anybody. I speak only what I think is right. That is why I made it very clear in the press conference that my Buddhism is different from both the Hinayana and Mahayana sects. If you like, call it Navayana.
Madkholkar asked, “Then why not call this sect Bhimayana?”
Ambedkar laughed and said, “If you want to call it that, you are free to call, but I won't say it. I'm a small man. I have not given the world any new ideas. All I know is that His Dharmachakra had been suspended in this country for the last thousand years, I had the luck of restarting it. You Hindus, because of your suicidal attitude, allowed Christianity and Islam to come to this country and grow. So much so that time to tear the country apart came. On the contrary, Buddhism, which is the most rational superior religion, emerged in this land, you have driven this Indian religion into exile. I brought that religion back to its home and I'm proud of that. You Hindus thought that, by declaring conversion, I have placed an axe on your religion, on culture and on the country. But now you know that my conversion is pure Indian and that's going to be the reason for the glory of Indian culture. On October of 1935, I announced the conversion. During that time you people abused me. But twenty years from now, you may have come to realize that, in regards of loyalty over India, I am nothing less than you people. Maybe I am more loyal than you. Because this country has given the philosophical gift to the whole world in the form of Buddhism, that you Hindus foolishly rejected. I donated it back to this country, I'm happy and proud of it.
In the introduction of the book “Buddha and His Dhamma” he wrote-
“The urge to write this book has a different origin. In 1951, the Editor of the Mahabodhi Society’s Journal of Calcutta asked me to write an article for the Vaishak Number. In that article I argued that the Buddha’s Religion was the only religion which a society awakened by science could accept, and without which it would perish. I also pointed out that for the modern world Buddhism makes a slow advance is due to the fact that its literature is so vast that no one can read the whole of it. That it has no such thing as a Bible, as the Christians have, is its greatest handicap. On the publication of this article, I recieved many calls, written and oral, to write such a book. It is in response to these calls that I have undertaken the task.”
He wrote the book so that the new Buddhist people can easily understand Buddhism.
The holy book “Buddha And His Dhamma” was written using Pali (Theravada) Buddhist literature, Sanskrit and Chinese (Mahayana) Buddhist literature.
I am giving names of the list of books Dr. Ambedkar used to write “Buddha And His Dhamma”.
    Anguttara Nikaya. (Pali Theravada text)
Majjhima Nikaya. ( Pali Theravada text)
Samyutta Nikaya. ( Pali Theravada text)
    Lalita Vistara. (Sanskrit Mahayana Text)
    Nidana Katha. (Pali Theravada text)
    Jataka Atthakatha. (Pali Theravada text)
    Buddhacharita. (Sanskrit Mahayana Text)
    Vinaya Pitaka. (Pali Theravada text)
    Mahavastu. (Sanskrit Mahayana Text)
    Dashabhumika Sutra. (Sanskrit Mahayana Text)
    Digha Nikaya. (Pali Theravada text)
Dhammapada. [Khuddaka Nikaya] (Pali Theravada text)
    Theragatha. (Pali Theravada text)
    Chinese Agamas. (Early Buddhist text)
Yogachara Bhumi Shastra. (Sanskrit Mahayana Text)
    Sutta Nipata. (Pali Theravada text)
    Manoratha Purani. (Pali Theravada text)
    Vimana Vatthu. (Pali Theravada text)
    Theri Gatha. (Pali Theravada text)
    Vatthugatha. (Pali Theravada text)
    Avatamsaka Sutra. (Sanskrit Mahayana Text)
Sukhavati Vyuha Bhashya. (Sanskrit Mahayana Text)
Hence, he combined all the important teachings of both Hinayana (Theravada) and Mahayana.
His version of Buddhism is a combination of both Theravada and Mahayana. Apart from that the so called “Navayana” Buddhism has a socially engaged aspect to it. The believers are neither completely focused on Arhatship nor on Buddhahood, they are focused on how to eradicate the Dukkha that exists in the world. Nibbana to them is “enough control over passion to establish a kingdom of righteousness”.
People should be aware of the false information that is present on Wikipedia regarding Navayana Buddhism. Never expect completely authentic information on Wikipedia. It appears on Wikipedia page of Navayana Buddhism that it rejects doctrines of Renunciation and Monastic life, Karma, Rebirth, Meditation, Nibbana, Realms of Existence, Four Noble Truths - ideas found in the major traditions of Buddhism. These things are totally wrong. Dr. Ambedkar explained teachings of Karma, Rebirth, Meditation, Nibbana, Four Noble Truths, etc in the Buddhist Bible. He did not reject Renunciation of Buddha, he gave a different explanation about Buddha’s Mahabhinishkramana, he also explained Monastic Order (both of Bhikkhus and Bhikkhunis) and the 227 Vinaya rules they follow. There is an All India level Buddhist Bhikkhu Sangha organisation of the monks of Navayana. They are ordained according to Theravadin manner. Dr. Ambedkar did not explain the Buddhist cosmology of 31 Realms of Existence, but he did explain how Buddha was approached by the Sahampati Brahma from the Brahma loka who appeared before Buddha after He achieved Enlightenment and the dialogue between them. Dr. Ambedkar also explained some discourses which Buddha gave to the Deva’s , Naga kings such as Nagaraja Kala, Nagaraja Muchalinda, and Yakkha Alavaka, etc
These facts are enough to prove that Ambedkar’s interpreted Buddhism is not different from Traditional Buddhism. It is a Socially Engaged Buddhism with all the important teachings of Hinayana (Theravada) and Mahayana.

@Back to Black I see no reason for them to tiptoe traditional buddhism and its myriad interpretations, what they follow has emancipated them and have liberated them from sufferings of caste system en masse...anyways Buddha always asked his disciples to be skeptic so good that all the miracles are out of the way...the reason meditation is de-emphasized is simple. Even in Buddha's story, did him being enlightened stop the killing of his people by other kings ? Dr. Ambedkar's movement did that and emancipated them, finally reducing the suffering. Meditation will follow only under safe shelter. Buddha being born in a rich household had all the time to think from an inside-out perspective, whereas Ambedkar did that outside in due to his circumstances. Only if someone like Ambedkar was a contemporary of Buddha, then the teachings would have been two way.

True significance of Ambedkar and his contribution for Buddhadharma in India can be appreciated only by those who have ever studied the history of Indian Buddhism which is written in blood and tears.See for instance the work done by Giovanni Verardi, the Italian scholar, whose seminal work "The Gods and The Heretics:The Crisis and Ruin of Indian Buddhism, sheds significant light on the issues raised by Ambedkar and the backdrop of some of his radical interpretations of Dhamma.

@Raven reforms usually involve reinterpretations of rebirth (for some the entire concept of rebirth), supernatural powers, devas/asuras and some of the mythological stories like the 29 buddhas and jataka tales being taken literally. Not everyone wants to take the spirituality out of buddhism but some of the external cosmological parts vary so much from country to country that reformers remove or de-emphasize those parts.

Dr Ambedkar thought that if Buddhism have danger with any religion than there is no religion but Marxism, that's why he put his thoughts on Marx and compared Buddha with Marx, he wanted Buddhist to read three books which were 1) Buddha and His Dhamma 2) Buddha and Karl Marx 3) Revolution and Counter revolution in ancient Indian
As he was revivalist of Buddhism in India so it was all his duty to sort out every problem, he wanted a modern kind of Buddhism, to embrace the teaching of Buddha in a modern way, so that today's world can accept it easily as you can see in other religious clothing they are focusing to modernize their veil

Ambedkar deserves so much respect for reviving Buddhism after it vanished from the sub continent. Though a great person named Angarika Dharmapala from my country, Sri Lanka did a great deal of activities to claim Buddhist pilgrimage sites to Buddhists, it was Ambedkar who re-introduced Buddhism to Indians with the world's biggest conversion event happened in Nagpur. All thanks to his efforts, Buddhism is the third most practiced religion in Mumbai right after Hinduism and Islam with more Marati people following Buddhism. Much respect to Ambedkar 🙏🏽 If you can, make a video on Sri Anagarika Dharmapala of Sri Lanka. I think Mother of Tiger Woods is an ardent follower of him. Namo Buddhaya 🙏🏽

Its unfortunate but during the time Buddhism was wiped out by Hindu Brahmins in India they also appropriated all the Buddhist Temples and removed statues to create their dieties or claimed Mahayana Buddha statues and Stupas as Vishnu or Shiva. Almost all of Mahayana , Tantra Tantra and Vajrayana Buddhist sites have been converted to Hindu temples by destroying , removing, painting or creating stories around the idols of buddha. All of Vishnu temples in south India are just Buddha from mahayana buddhism or and its variants. There was a systematic effort by brahmins to appropriate cultural sites of buddhism. And still we find only Buddhist temples ain all archeological dig sites and not a single Hindu site or temple or inscription. But truth cannot be hidden for ever there is a systematic effort from the other side to reclaim our ancient buddhist sites appropriated by Brahmins.

Buddhism's intrinsic beauty lies in its exceptional adaptability to diverse socio-political frameworks, rooted in its teachings of fluidity and interconnectedness. Instead of rigid dogma, Buddhism embraces a profound wisdom of emptiness, encouraging individuals not to act based on rigid doctrines but to act with a deep understanding of the intricate web of interdependence that binds all existence.
Consider the Buddhism of B.R. Ambedkar called Navayana, a striking example of this adaptability. While his interpretation may not even feature fundamental Buddhist concepts like the Four Noble Truths or the Noble Eightfold Path therefore some might not even consider it Buddhism at all, but he subtly takes wisdom from those teachings and accordingly postulates his own innovative solutions to complex socio-political challenges of his time. This approach, often referred to as engaged Buddhism or evolved/adapted Buddhism, transcends traditional boundaries, extending its influence far beyond just solitary meditation and spirituality. A major point I want to make here is this is how religions and spiritualities should influence and impact people.
Engaged Buddhism transforms into a dynamic and catalytic force when applied comprehensively to all facets of life-material, political, social, cultural, and beyond. It emerges as a potent extension of religious and spiritual principles, equipped to address the multifaceted dimensions of the human lives with profound wisdom and boundless compassion. This highlights Buddhism's perpetual evolution, continually evolving to meet the ever-changing needs of our complex world.

Ambedkar's version of Buddhism - Navayana can be understood only by the pain and suffering endured by 80%+ Indians at the hands of Brahmins (highest in the caste hierarchy, highly oppressive). Its a bit like what would have happened if blacks had separated themselves to form a new rational religion (Martin Luther King), far away from the orthodox (you can see whites as Brahmin Kshatriya and blacks as the others, called Bahujans). I said 'a bit like' because Christianity didn't oppose blacks in the Bible, whereas the scriptures of Hindu religion clearly wish the worst and deny basic rights to Bahujans. Which means you can't reform the same religion like Christianity was reformed, here you need to completely disown Hindu religion because the discrimination is coming right from their scriptures. And that is why Ambedkar decided to convert. But almost every religion has been affected seriously by caste in India and you'll be surprised to know that even Muslims and Christians have caste hierarchy in India! Therefore to rid the Bahujans of their oppressive clutches, Ambedkar finding none existing religions suitable/rational enough to endure the influence of caste in the future, reformed Buddhism (the sanest one at the time, and indigenous so that his followers don't get alienated by Brahmins). His choice was Buddhism, because there's nothing divisive in their scriptures, hence whatever weaknesses we see in that religion today are merely a mistake/bigotry of its followers, which means attempts at reformation will be successful. The supernatural elements of Budhha, all have been brought by Brahmin converts to Buddhism or other Brahminized people. Appropriation is their game, that the world must be careful about.
Wherever Hindus go, they carry divisive notions about professions and concepts of purity/impurity. That's why in the west people don't shy away from working as sweepers, cleaners, etc because they see them as part of economy (its just work, it doesn't decide my nature). But in India, Brahmins look down over these jobs and discriminate like black n-word. Come to India, and ask any sweeper their their caste, they can never ever be Brahmins! People need to reject these rubbish notions in their countries, anything that comes right with birth (caste, color, gender) is not a thing to be proud of, not a previlege to discriminate. Navayana will strongly stand against them, this is our Dhamma.
PS : Color-racism is around 500 yrs old, casteism is 3000 years old! Second only to the struggle of genders.

Fascinating! I'd never heard of Ambedkar before so thanks for such an educational video, Doug! It's interesting how some - maybe most, in fact - early Buddhist traditions shy away from issues of social justice, direct action etc. There seems to be, like you say, Doug, more of a focus on transforming the mind, maybe creating a kind of Mexican wave effect where the will to do 'evil' or cause harm diminishes within us one by one through practising and living the dhamma. Which definitely makes sense to me, even though I would also consider myself invested or at lease interested in issues of social justice. Another great video, Doug, thanks again!

Today Buddhism is alive in india, because of babasaheb Ambedkar.
In rashtrapati bhavan there is a standing statue of buddha behind the chair of president. Which says many things..
Ashoka chakra that is dhamma chakra placed on tricolour flag by babasaheb Ambedkar.
Four faced lion as national emblem which is symbol of buddha dhamma.
Lotus as national flower, It's significant in buddhism.

Btw let me also tell you most of todays navayana follower, like me 3rd gen buddhists does call themselve buddhist but their action indicates similar of Atheism. Poor people can use their experience to develope compassion, goodwill and patience and improve their karma by generosity and rejoice (mudita). You do not need any thing to practice rejoice, you can have Joy on your own good qualities, those of others, your own happiness and their happiness of others. And you can practice it while you are lying on the beach, your bed, your sofa or travelling in a bus or a train.

Dr B R Ambedkar was a great person and it is very relived to see an Indian venerating the Buddha genuinely and sincerely given that Buddhism has been extinct from tis place of origin and birth and that it has been absorbed into Hinduism. He has contributed to the independence of India and encouraged its modernisation (in contrast to Gandhi a Caste Hindu) He probably converted to Buddhism as a form of resistance against the caste system and upper caste dominance. However care must be taken to assess his view on Buddhism which may have departed and deviated from the actual teachings of the Buddha. Always remember Buddhist means of the Buddha not Dr Ambedkar, not Ajahn Brahm, not Ajahn Chah, not Bhikkhu Bodhi. Always find out what the Buddha taught and test it for yourself.

So as long as we follow Buddha's teaching and not opinions of others, we are then following the true Dhamma. That is the only way to reach Nirvana!
