People in Florida can't even afford insurance for their house, how they gonna afford MLB tickets? LOL The Marlins and Rays are near the bottom of attendance in MLB because people in that state don't have expendable money to go to the games.
You are so correct, and it has been that way for some time. Between the low paying tourist related jobs, the large numbers of retired individuals on fixed incomes, and the competition for entertainment (beaches, theme parks, year-round golf courses) there just isn't enough money in enough hands to support the attendance like so many other cities around the country. I do believe, however, if they moved to Orlando (if the city or county will welcome them and help build a stadium - a lot more tourist related taxes are collected in and around Orlando) - the attendance would be far greater. If nothing else, Orlando gets more summertime tourists from all over the country, and many of them would time their visits in order to attend a game for their favorite team 'on the road'. Many Orlando Locals are also sick of Disney and their ever-increasing prices to go there, I think they would welcome Baseball as a diversion. The Magic does pretty good on attendance, so somebody around here has some money for attendance at a professional sporting event.
Because the owner is a cheap Ahole wanting Tax Payers to pay for it all, which only St Pete City is dumb enough to do it seems. Over a billion for a stadium noone will go too! Complete wate! OUR HOMES ARE DESTROYED, OUR HOTELS, OUR RESTURANTS OUR BEACHES! We those loans for fixing our beaches. Tampa is more fiscally responsible it seems, maybe this will force their hand. Sadly we didn't get enough NO Votes in the city. County wise yes. Kepp them by the Bucs or ship them back north with the Snowbirds!
Neither TB nor Miami can draw. 28th and 29th in attendance out of 30 teams. Only the lowly A's draw worse and they're leaving Oakland. Northerners like to come down here in Feb. and Mar.; drop some bucks to get some sun and watch a little Grapefruit League ball, but a lot of us locals have no desire to plop down the kind of money they want to watch a baseball game played by no-hustle millionaires, let alone do it all summer long. The experiment has failed...move on.
Miami can’t draw because of the front office, if they put a team that’s competitive the fans will come. As for Tampa Bay, baseball would be better in Orlando with a better attendance.
These newly elected county commissioners ( Chris Latvala, Vince Nowicki) were never on board with the new stadium. Latvala's father received a $10,000 donation from the Phillies when Latvala was running for county commissioner. 3 weeks after the donation Chris is throwing out the first pitch at a Phillies spring training game!!! I mean c'mon! The Phillies are trying to modernize this clearwater minor league stadium and build a new baseball park that would cost around half a billion. I suspect that Chris Latvala would prefer that than Rays deal, and the Phillies modernize their stadium. Source: Tampa bay times, Jack and Chris Latvala: a money trail and continued influence in Pinellas politics
If the Rays want to stay in that area, they need to go to actual Tampa. I had a friend who was in Tampa for a business trip and wanted to catch a Ray's game. He said it sucked getting to & from St. Pete; he didn't realize it was that far away.
Some of you are saying "Good, let the Rays pay for everything," the trouble is sports owners do not think like the rest of the working world. They will move to another city to get the money they want, if you do not believe me, ask the city of Oakland. They lost the Warriors they play in San Francisco ticket prices are so much higher, and let's not forget the Raiders who play in Las Vegas and the A's will start playing also in Vegas in a few years. It is about a team getting the biggest deal available. Look for the Rays to move to either Nashville, Portland or Salt Lake City in a few years, so to those who say let the team pay for everything, I understand that, but be prepared for the consequences.
Good let the rays pound Sand if the owner wants a new stadium let him pay for it he worth a billion dollars we have people trying to rebuild their life and some baseball owner wants a new stadium
Good next plans if I was part of the rays would be too look into a spot at the Florida state fairgrounds 301 and MLK would be a great spot for it or even build it on the hard rock casino side
While that would be a better location than St. Pete, it would then become a question of whether Hillsborough County would approve funds for a stadium. With the situation possibly looming for a replacement or renovation of Raymond James Stadium as well, the answer is likely not.
Let's try something out there. There was a deal for a stadium to be built in Howard Terminal. The numbers weren't far off. Would the Rays be open to moving to Oakland if they could get a new stadium built at Howard Terminal? I know it's crazy, but what other options do the Rays have?
@@cityhawk The Athletics belong in Oakland, just as their brother team the Rays belong in Tampa this is the natural order of the universe and Manfred in in violation
That’s a huge misconception. The only reason why Florida is struggling attendance wise is because of multiple factors. Miami Marlins situation is really their front office doing fire sales consistently and losing fans because of it, if they can keep a team together that will grow, then the attendance will improve. As for Tampa Bay they should’ve never had an MLB team, Orlando should’ve had the Devil Rays in 1998 right in downtown next to TD warehouse Centre.
It's not dead. The commissioners have till March of 2025 to approve the bonds per the agreement. The Rays are just doing what they have done for 15 years and are playing games. Clearly the Rays have another plan in the works and want out of the St. Pete deal. The excuses they cite such as delay in ground breaking, inflation and storm related delays should have been factored into their planning and project timelines. Time will tell how St.Pete and the Rays plan to conclude the existing lease agreement. However, I'm pretty sure maintenance and repair is supposed to be on the tenant per the 94 agreement... Of course the city probably now bears some responsibility for screwing up the insurance coverage to save a dime. Honestly, the Rays and the City Council both have made some really poor decisions this year. They need to all get together with the county and see how they can get back on track. I'd also like to see MLB step in and force Stu to sell the team... he's been a disingenuous owner and based on demanding money for a stadium above all else after the storms this year shows his lack of understanding and compassion for the region and impacted residents of Pinellas County.
So did the owner not have insurance for the stadium to help cover the charge if a hurricane came? They have commercial insurance for places like this did he just never buy it. It’s crazy that he profits off this team yet he can’t even afford to pay for repairs.
@@americasteam2112 yup that's what I heard as well and the original insurance would've covered the repairs but the county thought it was a smart idea to reduce the insurance, knowing fully well that Florida gets hit by hurricanes.
Didn't they want to play a bunch of games in canada a few years back? So go to it, the stadium sucked here tear it down, move on, no loyal fans in florida its a red state.

Bread and circuses
Finally. They can move to a city with a real stadium in a city that actually loves baseball. Not just spring training for retirees
Wow. Looks like the Rays are going to Montreal or Nashville.
Cheapskate owners are the Bane of all Pro Sports. Cities are stupid to finance stadiums.
Except in bigger markets where they have boatloads of cash to spend freely.
I disagree. The county owns the stadium fix it or else
@@MikeX3000 bigger markets are fighting back from financing them too. The only people who win from a new stadium is the owners of a team.
