My father was a 3rd degree master mason and I have always been proud of that fact. He was a very generous man and helped anyone in need all his life, his father was also a mason. My dad was buried with full masonic rites.

I've noticed that the "Grande Orient de France" used four letters in their square and compass. Considering that operative masonry started in France, speculative masonry likely started there also, despite the fact ex-pats from Scotland were living in France at the time. My guess is that when speculative masonry took off in England, they simply dropped all letters but the G. It has taken on many meanings since then and its true origins would somehow lend more credibility to France than England so we can't have that now can we? Here here.

Grande Orient is not recognised by the United Grand Lodge of England, as the principal requirement for Regularity is not adhered to, a belief in a supreme being. Therefore, it cannot be considered as practicing Freemasonry. This is what caused the schism between itself and the UGLE back in the 19th century. There is no evidence to suggest that speculative Masonry started in France. Nobody knows for sure where, or when, Freemasonry started. The letter G is not used inside the familiar Masonic sign of the square and compasses. It is, however always displayed inside the Lodge room. There is no definitive meaning of the letter G. It is open to the interpretation of the individual Mason. It might stand for God, Gnosis, Geometry or even Gobstopper! You are aware that not everyone believes in the Christian God, yes? We are perfectly free to worship as we see fit. I am Christian but I have friends of different faiths. I am more interested that we have freedom of religion than government officials mouthing religious platitudes whilst acting anything but Christian. I love living in a country where I may believe as I see fit. I don't need an established state church/religion.
And for the record, the right of people not to recite the pledge was guaranteed by the Supreme Court of the United States in the 1940s. Saying the Pledge does not indicate whether or not a person is loyal to our country or not--though those of some religions do not recite it because their religion does not permit them to pledge allegiance to any entity besides God.

Actually, the very first lodge was formed in 965 in York, thus you have the name of York Rite Masonry. All others lodges grew from that point onward. The first Scottish lodge was established in 1585 under the Shaw Statutes. All of this can be found with a little research. I have been involved in Masonry for many years and was actually the education chairman of the district in which I live. I can tell you that, in all of the years I have been a Mason, I can tell you that I have never encountered anything nefarious or questionable under the law. Is everyone in masonry perfect? The short answer is no. But, that is more because man, as a species, is less than perfect and manages to infiltrate the worst of behaviours into anything, particularly government. You're MOSTLY right- but there is a part that is often left out. IN medieval times- travel was very restricted unless accompanied by knights.. and various others. Travel from one area to anther was controlled by the various countries and it made it difficult for getting skilled masons to the appropriate areas as they did not possess "royal" papers and acknowledgement for travel. Strange Society. I was told as a European migrant child that there were some Masons in our family but when I tried to find out who or what it was all about I was told we do not associate with that part of the family because they are evil and our faith (Catholic Christian) forbids masonry. I never knew much about it and often wondered what these people did, what they believed in etc that was so secret etc and so evil that Catholic Christians were deemed to be sinners if they engaged in Free Masonry. I did once have a neighbour, an old man, very high ranking. I knew he was involved in all their rituals and ceremonies but could never find out what or why etc. Thank you for explaining it. Most U.S. Lodges, training is learning the etiquette and memorizing a story (which combines history and one’s own experience) and being able to recite that. There is much philosophical meaning behind it which is different for each person.
The length of time for one to pass from one degree to the next varies by locale and governing Grand Lodge. At my lodge, each member is given one year to advance to the next degree (COVID did result in exceptions), however, I understand that in Australia it totals 7 years from first day to being made a Master Mason.
Ancient Masonry: long period of training
This is the time when Masonry was that of craftsmen, so yeah, it takes years to decades to perfect a craft and move upward in that craft. In any skill-craft, math is a huge part, stone masons especially had to understand architecture as they were contracted to build the great buildings of much of the world until about the 1600’s, I think.

In the original lodges (referred at the time as guilds (word varies by language)), as was common in much of the world at the time, crafts (wood, metal, stone, clergy, et cetera) were only done by men with some but few exceptions. Women, regardless of were in the world, were managers of the home. Thus, by natural evolution of those craft guilds, which were essentially unions for a skill set, men were a predominate factor and as such remain in the greater body of freemasonry.
England Freemasonry (today time) has seemed to embrace women’s Lodges in much the same way the greater U.S. Lodges reconciled and accepted Prince Hall Lodges. Honestly, I expect the U.S. Lodges to start recognizing and accepting women’s lodges eventually.
There are, in the U.S., appendant bodies which are for: all persons regardless of age and gender, women, men, male children, or female children. The U.S. Freemason regular lodge is male only in 99.9999999999992% of all lodges.
The appendant organizations are not Freemason groups, yes there is an affiliation to some degree, in some cases very minor (e.g., motor cycle clubs). Just because you are in Order of the Eastern Star does not mean you are a Freemason. Just because you are in Jobs Daughters, or DeMolay does not mean you are a Freemason.
If you are a Shriner, a Royal Arch, a Scottish Rite, then you are a Freemason.

Knights of Columbus vs Freemasonry are the same; ritual, purpose, structure, lessons, fellowship, charity…., I could go on forever. The primary difference is the script followed and belief requirements. Knights of Columbus accept ONLY Catholics, Freemasonry accepts all regardless of in whom you place your trust in times of imminent of perilous danger (some exceptions apply i.e., the devil; Devil worshipers are not permitted) but Freemasons will accept Catholics…yeah, there are Catholic Freemasons…the Catholic church likely I not aware.

I've noticed that the "Grande Orient de France" used four letters in their square and compass. Considering that operative masonry started in France, speculative masonry likely started there also, despite the fact ex-pats from Scotland were living in France at the time. My guess is that when speculative masonry took off in England, they simply dropped all letters but the G. It has taken on many meanings since then and its true origins would somehow lend more credibility to France than England so we can't have that now can we? Here here.

Grande Orient is not recognised by the United Grand Lodge of England, as the principal requirement for Regularity is not adhered to, a belief in a supreme being. Therefore, it cannot be considered as practicing Freemasonry. This is what caused the schism between itself and the UGLE back in the 19th century.
There is no evidence to suggest that speculative Masonry started in France. Nobody knows for sure where, or when, Freemasonry started.
The letter G is not used inside the familiar Masonic sign of the square and compasses. It is, however always displayed inside the Lodge room. There is no definitive meaning of the letter G. It is open to the interpretation of the individual Mason. It might stand for God, Gnosis, Geometry or even Gobstopper!

There is no speculation about the “G,” If you understand numerology you would notice that “G” is the 7th letter of the English alphabet. And for the record, the right of people not to recite the pledge was guaranteed by the Supreme Court of the United States in the 1940s. Saying the Pledge does not indicate whether or not a person is loyal to our country or not--though those of some religions do not recite it because their religion does not permit them to pledge allegiance to any entity besides God.

Actually, the very first lodge was formed in 965 in York, thus you have the name of York Rite Masonry. All others lodges grew from that point onward. The first Scottish lodge was established in 1585 under the Shaw Statutes. All of this can be found with a little research.
I have been involved in Masonry for many years and was actually the education chairman of the district in which I live. I can tell you that, in all of the years I have been a Mason, I can tell you that I have never encountered anything nefarious or questionable under the law. Is everyone in masonry perfect? Women are not masons. The order of the eastern star for example is not Masonic. They have their own rites and everything separate from masons. Only thing that connects them is for a woman to join she must be related to a Mason or married to a Mason. Women “masonry” in Europe is still considered irregular and therefore not true masons. So one group can’t go to another’s meeting. Will this change in the future? Maybe. But for now they are not masons.

You're MOSTLY right- but there is a part that is often left out. IN medieval times- travel was very restricted unless accompanied by knights.. and various others. Travel from one area to anther was controlled by the various countries and it made it difficult for getting skilled masons to the appropriate areas as they did not possess "royal" papers and acknowledgement for travel. (before passports ever thought about). The masons were give a status for FREE travel as long as they were traveling for WORK-- on assigned projects...and the handshake saved time on inspecting each section of travelers and proving they wERE indeed masons of various levels.. Strange Society. I was told as a European migrant child that there were some Masons in our family but when I tried to find out who or what it was all about I was told we do not associate with that part of the family because they are evil and our faith (Catholic Christian) forbids masonry. I never knew much about it and often wondered what these people did, what they believed in etc that was so secret etc and so evil that Catholic Christians were deemed to be sinners if they engaged in Free Masonry. I did once have a neighbour, an old man, very high ranking. I knew he was involved in all their rituals and ceremonies but could never find out what or why etc. Thank you for explaining it. Sounds like just people who like dressing in strange robes and performing mysterious rituals and eating and drinking together and being jolly good mates. I didn't know they even have female Masons and that this is not a recent feminist thing. But they seem to be mostly old women. They must enjoy all the dressing up, rituals, eating drinking and fellowship it provides. I can now see why the Catholic Church disapproves of Masonry. It seems almost as ritualistic as Catholicism and like a quasi religion, though the old man I knew who was a senior Mason told me members can be of any religion, but they must believe in some sort of Creator. They cannot be atheists. Which is interesting. Because some religions that worship some sort of Creator can also be pretty dark, sinister beliefs. I wonder if they would allow a person from such a very evil eg Satanic type cult join. Study of different cults, religions and secret societies is interesting. I would not be interested in joining any. Just an intellectual curiosity about the. I often wonder what motivates people to join such groups, what sorts of people would join them and why. It seems some professional types join Free Masons as a means of furthering their careers, through useful connections, though they deny this.
@Annemarie May I have zero doubt that the Catholic Church, is, at it's heart, superstitiously living in the dark ages and at worst, crooked and dangerous. I say this as a Freemason who was raised a Catholic and having an entire family that is Catholic to this day.
Catholicism is the only religion that bans its members from joining Freemasonry, though there is some evidence to say that the current Pope has lifted the ban. As a Freemason, I can confirm that there is absolutely nothing in Freemasonry which is incompatible with ANY religion, let alone Catholicism. Men join for different reasons and combinations of reasons. Some for the charitable side, some to regain the cameraderie they no longer have since leaving the armed forces, or police. Some join, purely for the social side, some for the history and ceremony and some for the esoteric learning.
ANYONE found using their membership for an unfair advantage is disciplined, with the potential for being thrown out, never being able to be admitted again. It is absolutely forbidden to use membership for personal gain. So all this you hear about Masons only hiring other Masons etc... hardly ever happens.. I'm not saying it DOESN''T happen...but it's is most definitely forbidden.
