  • Cumbria's woodlands are home to many iconic species including red squirrels. Sadly, our native reds are on the verge of extinction in England and the Lake District is one of the last strongholds for this creature greatly admired by the late Beatrix Potter.
Discover how local volunteers, rangers and charities seek to ensure the survival of this much loved woodland creature.

I am sorry about our Grey ones that are invasive. I never knew that until today. I have seen Reds here in NH but only in the white mountains forests.
Bastard Greys it is! Just never knew...............

Awwwww...that is so so sweet!! I watched videos here on youtube (Scotland based) and it was said that presence of pine martens deals with greys in natural ways. They killed them and control their population to such extent that one day they are completely gone from those forests were pine martens rule....They do not kill or affect reds ! Reds thrive ...pine martens are no threat to them...maybe you should research Scottish rewilding of reds and the part pine martins play in all of that and implement same strategy?...?...It is always better to find natural solutions....Let the Nature fix that wrong....

Carry on the good work! Living in Richmond, Surrey, can often find me in Richmond park. Unfortunately never see a red squirrel, just greys. So this is heart warming to find out that they’re still out there in the uk.
Hope they get reintroduced to Richmond park and the rest of the uk at someday.

Much thanks for such a comprehensive video on the Eurasian Red Squirrel! I actually have 5 wild pet squirrels that live outside, and even more interesting might be that I’m high up in an apartment building! I live in North America so my pets are the Eastern Grey Squirrel (EGS). Even though they are my pets, I have understood how damaging they have been to your native Red Squirrel population and I have cared about this issue for many years. I almost began crying at 2:39 hearing about the Squirrel Pox. I can’t finish watching the video.

Poor little reds, being pushed out of their own country. I hope they can be saved and that they can thrive once again.

When I first moved to Nth Cumbria in 2003, there were families of reds on my acreage, so I planted hundreds of hazels for them which now produce many kilos of nuts most years. Sadly I haven't seen a single red for 3 years, but do see greys stripping the nuts off. You can't shoot them when they're hidden by leaves, and traps have never been successful. I sadly think this war is lost

All wildlife is special and not just the red squirrel.

Wrong. Ecosystems are special and sadly so easily unbalanced.

@rsrchris Exactly, Chris. For reference, the Asian carp causing havoc in the rivers in the USA and the American crayfish causing mayhem in British waters.
