The connection error indicator feature was designed with women in mind, particularly those who are likely to encounter a serial killer or get caught in a blizzard. Mr. Shumacker told me himself
I just got mines, it did the same thing on a battery that was on 7.6 volts, since the bad battery light dint go on I left it it went on and off it keeped doing that till it brought up the percentage to 12, after that it was strait charging, the battery is now at 12.6 and it says 85%, and is still charging it, this was a battery that we had ready to throw out, it saved it, I say 85% as of now it's pretty good
My charger does the same thing even on new batteries. I just leave it sit there. It will cycle between on and off for a while then it charges the battery. I primarily use it for my trolling motor batteries which I drain down pretty low before I charge them
This is an important point. The charger has AI and a desulfating mode which attempts to revitalize a dead battery. Don't jump to conclusions. It may be able to revive a 'dead' battery if left on for a period of time. Read your instructions!
I just purchased from Amazon....thank you for this video. It came today and I hooked it up to my Escape (dead battery due to not being driven because of this virus) My battery is only 18 months old...ugh. Lost my husband 2 years ago, don't want to constantly bother my son every time I have a problem, so I'm learning! Thank You....I was a bit nervous and this video certainly helped :-)
I'm glad you found it useful. It's probably the best and easiest charger I've ever owned, and I've had a few in my days. You will easily be able to charge your battery and impress your son. I have an Escape also. Don't you love it?
responsible for a neighbors car...drove it weekly and then the battery was dead. Neighbor had more serious issues to deal with. Purchased this on Amazon, hooked it up and several hours later, battery charged and working fine. I didn't test the jump start ability because I didn't need to, but impressed with how easy to hook up and monitor the charging. Thanks for doing this.
I'm getting ready to order one of these chargers too. On a different note. i tell all my friends about the milwaukee tire inflator from home depot. It is so convenient for adding air to your tires. Happy Holidays!!😁
You did not follow the directions. The charger should not be plugged into the wall socket until AFTER you connect the cables to the battery. You plugged it into the wall socket BEFORE you connected the cables. Once plugged into the wall socket, if you don't hit the Start/Stop button within 30 seconds , the charger will turn itself on automatically. So by the time you attached the cables to the battery, the charger was already "On" and the charger was reading the correct (low) voltage. Then you hit the Start/Stop button which turned the charger "Off". When you turned it back "ON" , the LED read zero, you assumed the battery was BAD. But when you started to take off the first cable, the LED read 10.2. Why? Because when you touched the cable, it re-established good contact with the post and the charger was working again. Had you simply re-attached both cables, the charger would have gone to work on the battery. And yes, as another commenter noted: when charging a battery outside of the vehicle (not hooked up under the hood), special precautions should be taken. Again, you did not follow directions.
Read the Amazon reviews for this model. Over 300 one star reviews for problems ranging from melting the cables, melting the charger, stopped working after 2-3 uses, and the main one, it charges at maximum 30 amps without tapering down or stopping. There are probably over 100 users that complained that it melted their new automotive or golf cart battery, and no one is able to get a response from the manufacturer. My first one wouldn't stop charging, the replacement one reads out totally erroneous numbers.Don't say I didn't warn you.
Lol, it's a great charger. People just don't know how to use tools and always think they know it all. Of course they will melt if you have it on boost for way too long while you're trying to start it at the same time. Instructions are for these 1 star reviewers.
I have had two, first one quit all together after 6 months, second one comes on but wont register battery volts and when turn u it on it cuts right back off, i have had it 3 months
I bought the same exact Schumacker battery charger shown here. According to its manual, it says before charging, you must connect a battery cable of at least 2 feet in length (to keep yourself as far away from the battery when connecting the battery to the charger) to the negative battery post of the dead battery and then connect the free end of the the battery cable to the negatvie battery clip of the charger then turn on the charger. I noticed on this video you did not do this, so is it safe to not connect a battery cable to the negative battery post of the dead battery in order to charge the battery? I'm just asking because these are the instructions on the manual; maybe it is just a precaution in case the battery explodes or ignites from fumes from the dead battery.
Good info on the video....I'm getting me one on Amazon right now...We are staying at home because of the virus but now my car has a dead battery so we are really stuck
Thanks for the comment. You will really like this charger. Smart chargers are the way to go these days. A lot better than the old "buzz box". Good luck and stay well.
I have the same charger it also has an additional feature it’s the desulfation feature it can detect excess sulfate on a battery and start desulfation and it will continue for up to 10hrs to remove sulfate from battery 👍
The battery might be good. How? Smart chargers will not start to charge a battery if it is to low. A regular charger will, and once you get the battery charging for awhile then the smart charger will work if it is a good battery. Just something that I found out about the smart chargers limits.
Schumacher says to use AGM mode when charging deep-cycle/marine batteries. That isn't in the manual, but they said it in an Amazon answer to a question.
The problem with these microprocessor battery chargers is that if your battery is too dead it will not try to charge it. You could have a battery that's a week old that's dead in your car and if it drops below a certain voltage, it wont charge it. I found a way to trick it, if you have an old school battery charger, one that you can make spark if you touch the two clips together, hook that up and then hook one of these smart chargers up and run it for a minute and then you can unclip the old charger, then this one will keep charging it.
You need to hammer a beyond dead battery in manual mode first, use 30a boost on this charger, get it past 10.5 first. This charger has an actual 'dead battery' LED - not saying it's accurate. Always check and fill that battery up with distilled water before charging!!
If it reads extremely low, select boost and run it for 5 minutes, then switch to trickle it retest and will show 12 volts....that's the "smart chip" weakness, it detects too low a voltage to attempt a trickle charge. If its bad SUL will light up.
Yes, this is the reason why many people don't like "smart" chargers. Since the "bad battery" LED isn't lighting up, I can assume that this is the likely source of the issue. It's likely that he could have started a charge by using the engine start or boost modes, but it's uncertain if doing so would be able to revive a dead battery that had been drained to about 3.5 volts.
Great video! The model I've gotten is the sc1280. Yet this video has the sc1281. ? Curious though as I have an interstate battery 12a and have no idea what category it falls under for charging. I was told to do a slow charge. What's your opinion on the slow charge? Safer for longevity of a battery?
Yes. Ive heard that many people. The slow charge is better for the battery is what they tell me. If your battery is just a normal car battery, choose the normal mode. Its not AGM.
Is the schumacher battery charger attached to a wall socket itself?? Can you answer that question please, or does it store charge and you use that charge to charge the battery?
Thanks for the comment. Yeah, that would have been good. But really, it's a smart charger, so nothing really to see. The display with switch back and forth from voltage to percentage about every 15 seconds. When it's done, the charging light goes out and it switches to "maintaining" untill you come back to disconnect it. It's a great charger.

Total piece of friggin crap! I bought the sc1231 and after a year you try to turn it on, with a very low battery and it won't even start charging. I have an ancient large schumacher wheel around charger that has been beat to hell and back, has lasted forever (over 20 years) and still works fine, but I wanted one that was easily portable. Do not buy these pieces of garbage; or you will be sorry. I will not buy an automatic battery charger again for as long as I live.
Your video is inaccurate, the battery was incorrectly connected. You must press the start button within 30sec when initially plugged in to charge. This is the reason the charger turn off after press “start” (it was plugged in more than 30 sec when you pressed the “start” button).
@5:20 this charger has a "bad battery" indicator (the bottom one on the right), why didn't that come on?
It doesn’t check that in the charging mode only in the jump modes that’s why. If he ran it in the boost or jump mode it will light up bad battery.

Yes, once the battery is charged unplug the charger and then remove the negative then the positive
@@lexbeltran1354 yes but does it have to be plugged in to use to jump start the car ?
@@Culley91 It has to be plugged in to do ANYTHING. It doesn't have a built-in battery. It's a CHARGER.
Let's leave it on without shutting off the unit, not very safe.
The microprocessor board in this pile of crap is weak. Mine lasted a year and it died😢

Doesn't tell me what
Total piece of friggin crap!
I thought this was a jumper. Ugh 😩!
🙄 I'm a woman and know you used this wrong
Parent nothing
You really don't know anything about batteries, do you?
Your video is inaccurate, the battery was incorrectly connected. You must press the start button within 30sec when initially plugged in to charge. This is the reason the charger turn off after press “start” (it was plugged in more than 30 sec when you pressed the “start” button).
You press the Start button, then you have 30 seconds to start your car. That function is for jump starting a car, not for the charging function
