The Flavour Feeder - Does it Work?

  • I recently did some tests on Supermarket products to see if they could be used instead of the expensive Bait Additive products manufactured specifically for anglers. In this new project, I wanted to use these liquid additives in a new type of feeder which could bring fish into my swim without actually filling them up with feed. This feeder would be used mostly in Winter when the fishes metabolism has slowed down to the point where they eat very little.
    The result of my experiments was to make the new Flavour Feeder which is the subject of today's video. Watch the video to see if it works.

    Hello Den, a famous Chinese bait maker (HUA) has shared the following principle for using flavour for carp fishing in Asia as: Spring - fishy; Summer - pale, Autumn - fragrant, Winter - strong. I noticed many people also has similar point.

    Hello Den, a fellow Brit here (West Midlands) ... great video's... another well-earned subscription, working though your back catalogue and smashing those 'Like' buttons! I have been following your Flavour Feeder from initial concept to testing... ingenious and inspirational ... I really do think you may be on to something here... that said, like with everything we try, (baits, attractants etc), it's always difficult to predict what 'might have happened' had we been fishing without them... But, I think this is a well-thought out product which, as you have said a few times, is designed to enhance winter fishing but from what I've seen, I think you're on to a winner :)

    I used to fish a lake where groundwater was banned and the carp loved mussels and prawns. My version of a flavour feeder was a maggot feeder with sponge inside dipped into cod liver oil. It worked very well but was quite messy on the cast.

    Hello Den, good to see you back by the water! A suggested modification for the tamping gadget you have made. Keep one end square and flat, to squeeze the water out of the sponge, and at the other end form a cruciform shape to use once you have added the 'glug', that will then partly compress the sponge so that when you remove the tamper, the sponge will absorb more of the 'glug', rather than squeezing it out of the sides as seems to happen with the square end tamper.

    • @FishingwithDen
      @FishingwithDen  Рік тому +1

      I see where you're going with this Chris, but I squeeze the water out with my finger. I like the idea of a Cruciform shape though. At the moment, the plunger has open squares like a feeder, which seems to work, but the new shape might work better?

    I sometimes see anglers here in the UK using so much groundbait that I'm sure they are feeding them off! Bites eventually stop for them and those fishing nearby. Your idea of flavour feeding is excellent and will never feed the fish off of course. Over groundbaiting is a common beginners mistake.

    Hi Den, I like your thinking on this, I saw someone do something similar in a match a few years ago. He was fishing with meat on the pole and not feeding anything except liquid flavouring in a pole pot. So the fish were attracted to the flavour but the only food was the meat on his hook. He won the match quite easily. His weight was 14lb and I came 2nd with 2lb 10oz.
    I had a lightbulb 💡moment yesterday which proved successful. I had been watching Guru videos on hybrid feeder fishing. The videos were on how to load the feeder and where to put the hook bait. The underwater camera showed the feeder pellets being pushed off the feeder by water pressure and the hook bait with it. The hook bait ended up a few inches away from the feeder. the fish either looked at it and bolted or just ignored it. They said that all the fish were mainly interested in was the feeder pellets and it showed the fish hoovering the pellets out of the feeder. So yesterday I used the hybrid feeder method and towards the end of the session, I thought about it and thought, what would happen if I didn't put a pellet on the hair rig and just buried the hook inside the pellets? i tried it, not knowing what to expect, and within 2 minutes I had caught a carp. I tried again to see if it was a fluke and caught another one. I finished with 10 carp using this trick so I Think we can safely say it works.
    I'll be trying it again at a different venue on sunday to see what happens.
    If the pellet manufacturers see this post, they won't be happy with me...oh well!

    Try making a small hole in the sponge. Then use a squeeze bottle with a pointed tip. Like one of those hair dye bottles. That way you can inject the flavour without the mess. I really like this idea for winter fishing. We want the attractant without building up a bed of feed. This seems like a very good solution. If you want to introduce any feed. You can simply swap the feeder for a couple of casts. I would like to see more videos of you using this at different times of the season. It would be really interesting to see if the attractant is as good as actual bait.
    I think this idea really does have something going for it.

    • @FishingwithDen
      @FishingwithDen  6 місяців тому

      Thanks for your comments. I have found that the sponge soaks up water after the molasses has gone. This makes the feeder quite heavy on the retrieve. It's not a problem with these small feeders, but I have been experimenting with larger feeders for use in summer and for that size it does make for a heavy feeder on the retrieve. I now have a feeder which has its own compartment for the liquid ingredients which I will be testing at some of the larger reservoirs. Unfortunately, I don't have a large reservoir all that close to me, so its taking a bit longer than I wanted.

    • @baldrickscunningplan6154
      @baldrickscunningplan6154 5 місяців тому

      Depends what type of sponge you are using. Household sponge would saturate and become heavy because it is designed to mop up water. You could always use aquarium filter sponge. It is available in varying grades. ie varying grades of hole size. It is not designed to hold water. It is designed to let water pass through it. Just a thought.@@FishingwithDen

    Hello Den, I tried out your method on Monday. I filled molasses in a repurposed feeder. My buddy sat next to me and fed Zammataro food. After a quarter of an hour I was able to catch the first roaches. My buddy hasn't had a bite yet. But that changed quickly. He caught up with me after 1 hour with the number of pieces. Then the flavor changed to anise. Then things looked different again. I caught roach in quick succession. After that, my bites eased up again and my buddy passed me. At the end of the session I was 7kg and he was 11kg. In the winter I will try again and add some maggots to the feeder. For me it was an exciting experiment.
