- A local friend was trying to fix his jeep that had stripped the gears on the original distributor for an unknown reason. He purchased a new one to replace it as he should. After getting frustrated with it he reached out to me to solve it. Very interesting how cheap stuff is made. Enjoy! Much Information!!
DEX is the mad scientist lol let’s get this guy to a million subscribers!
Closer than I was 😂
I believe that the biggest reason so many people relate to you Dex is because you have learned like a lot of us have learned. Trial and error. Breaking stuff, learning how it works, and so on. Thanks for an informative video showing a lot of tips and tricks that you have picked up through the years. It really helps a lot of us who are trying to chase down these gremlins.
Those distributors are designed to work with both 4.0L and 2.5L engines. That being said, the supplied distributor is generally set up for the 2.5. To set it up for the 4.0L you must drive the roll pin out of the distributor drive gear/shaft and reposition the gear (there are 2 holes in the shaft). It was designed that way to cut down on stock (dual purpose) and confusion, but seeing the lack of information detailing the adjustment procedure online it may have created more!😂 Believe me, I know because I chased that issue for weeks before finding the solution in the actual Shop Manual.
If your a hack job, I’m an airplane pilot! And I’ve never been in an airplane before! Awesome videos Dex!!
dude that shit about bad idling when battery is low is so true, happened to me many times. great video
I don’t own a Jeep, and I watch all of your content! Congratulations on your UA-cam success!
Just replaced the distributor in my 95 xj. I used a crt performance distributor. It went in as it should and is built correctly. Seeing this im glad i didn't even mess with the cheap autoparts store distributors.
Man you're helping alot of people with what you do.
Big ups brother, this is massive
Keep doing it your way
I love your videos dex do not stop
DEX Jeeps!!! Always great videos.
Good info thanks for the video
Dude I really appreciate The knowledge that you are sharing. You have helped me out a lot with your videos

I had mess with this junk bout year ago and it got it to run but it not perfect I had to just do it all by ear and feel it’s still not right I need to get it back from guy and go through it like this keep up the knowledge dex your the man screw the haters they just mad cause what you do works well
The powers that be need to bring back manufacturing to the states so we can get some decent parts again! I've worked on other vehicles, and had to replace the same part multiple times with the cheap crap before finding one that actually works. It's crazy. Keep the videos and good info comin' Dex!
Yeah I have had - just in the past few months - two bad fuel pumps, two bad master cylinders.
Don't hold your breath, the days of US manufacturing are gone, welcome to the 💩show.
Awesome video 📸👍👍 DEX you are a wealth of knowledge!! Thanks for sharing with us
Keep em coming Dex! Thanks for help!
You are the man Dex,
You videos are the best
Wish you were in Florida
Dex is a great jeep mechanic and who ever doesn't like the way you try to teach and help others than they can suck a fat egg😂 I think you can fix any jeep on earth so thanks for the great video I do watch every one you make dex keep it simple brother and I'll keep supporting your channel
I always check the easy/free stuff first. Chuck, my brother in law, was one of the best if not the best I've ever seen. He always said check fuses. Great videos Dex
Good stuff man I've run into this issue on one of my rigs and went through two distributors trying to force that fork to line up with the bolt hole 😢
Good video brother. Very good! Awesome! Troubleshooting helps a lot of people who don't understand what they're doing. I'm a MasterTech. I've been doing this for about 35 years and I could not have explained it any better than you did. I like watching these videos showing the youngsters and if I would have saw you do something wrong or different than I would have done I'd mentioned that however. Fantastic job man. Keep up the good work. Appreciate what you do
Great stuff man ur helping us do it at home guys
Just another great video as always
Thanks again! Just daily issues I run into
I subscribed. I liked this content
Your shirt changed to blue in the last couple seconds .
Pretty slick .
Great information ...
Renewed my confidence in you. Great work 👍
Yep when you go by a new part and it’s bad….it takes experience for sure to not get whipped!!
Keep doing these videos, ima. 15yr ase master mech and love learning from guys like you, it gives me a leg up in yhe industry because people just dont think outside the box like you do to get cars repaired right
Great troubleshooting demonstration, and great info!
Good stuff keep them coming
Awesome work!
Really enjoy your videos Dex. I always learn something.
Keep up the good work man. Enjoy your videos
This is the problem I'm having with my 92 that I put a 99 40L in it but used all the 92 stuff ran for about 100 miles and the timing is just off its like it's 180 out ty for this video I'm going to double check it this weekend ❤
Nice! Love learning from you!!
I got a new distributor and my Jeep ran but threw misfire codes for all cylinders. I was so perplexed. I consulted the forums and was told to check and probably rotate the distributor drive gear 180.. presto!!
Like the format and all information is good. Keep up the videos
Good stuff. Thanks for sharing.
DEX I done that awhile back and was looking at it and comparing the new with stock and the gears are 180 out... knocked the roll pin out and spun the gear 180 and the hole lined up with the slot
You should never have to do that. Good it worked out for you.
Video was good. Some say your a hack. I say your resourceful. Keep up the great work.
Just because it's new doesn't mean it works.
Great job Uncle Tony told me about your channel
Really Appreciate the videos it's the knowledge for me💯 quality video.
Great video as always! I’m getting ready to swap and engine in my 91 Cherokee
Nice video and yes this is the norm for new parts. Like the previous post my gear was 180 off from the shaft too and it ran for a few hundred miles but died. The timing was just a bit off so I used the new housing with my old shaft, new gear and everything is perfect again.
The distributor gear is installed 180 degrees off on that chinese distributor. I have been a Jeep tech since 1987 and I have seen it many times. On one side the roll pin lines up with the tooth, on the other side it is between the teeth. Knock the roll pin out, spin the gear and put the pin back. Or even better, do what you did and use a real distributor
Or you can set your multimeter to continuity and put your leads on the tops of the fuse where the metal protrudes. If there is continuity it's good if not bad
Great video! I've bought an XJ 10 months ago, and man, sometimes it gives me an headache. But 90% it is electric issue. Mostly relays are going bad, lately TCM went bad (I was testing everything, ended up buing used TCM and now it works great).
Really enjoy your videos! You are haring so much amazing information, and it's really helping me with my XJ project. Thank you!
I remove the gear as they sometimes fit them 180 degrees out.
The one I have in my ZG was leaking engine oil from the top under the distributor cap.
I found that the oil return holes were not drilled.
I ran a 1 mm drill through the bushings from the bottom out top of the bottom bush
Dex thank you for the information. Really appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
Heck yeah man thanks for the wisdom, good Stuff keep them coming .
Just dealt with that distributor casting problem a short while ago. Took me a few hours of thinkin I was crazy or couldn’t time a motor
I’m having the same issue it’s a headache but this was more than helpful please keep making these videos your the Jeep gate keeper now 😅
Tripod video was nice Dex. Keep em' coming!
I dont remember the years exactly, but it's early 2000ish. The factory OPDA (distributer) had an issue with lubrication and it would fudge up the bearing and eventually wear out the gear that meshes with the camshaft. It can screw with the timing if it wore the cam gear too but that's a bit more rare since the camshaft is a much harder metal. I actually love the tripod vids, but can you start looking at the camera lens instead of the screen? It makes me feel like you're ignoring my presence😂
Idk how you nail the comments every time!! New screen is huge and right there to see. Rookie mistakes!!
Dex please give us a video on the problem with the pickup. Love the channel brother
Darn good info!
Thanks for the video Dex!
I'm contemplating pulling a 4.0 out of a 90's Cherokee, and putting it in my 83 CJ7. The 4.0 has a tick, I am gonna listen to the top end, and the bottom end to see if it's valve train or crank shaft. That will probably be the determining factor before I pull the 4.2 and 4.0 out of their resting places lol.
Keep em coming, love the videos ❤
Good stuff!!!
Your freaking awesome!!! So enjoy watching your videos. A true mad scientist at work 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉HAPPY NEW YEAR DEX🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Love your style and videos Dex it’s not hack job if it works brother 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Excellent comment. Hack job gonna make Dex famous 😎😎😎
Thanks for the video man lots of good info
These are really good videos 👍
All my friends say why are you driving 50mi to Carson city to pic n pull for a distributor they got one at advance in town for 65$ yeah no thanks pic n pull it is
Dang china crap! I work as a heavy diesel mechanic and our parts guy has ordered Amazon parts for our fleet and they always come back a day or so later with the same problem 🤦🏼♀️ awesome stuff as always man and also looks like you got a new camera? Nice!!
Great video, as always.
Can you do a video on the 99 XJ cut down harness, please?
It’s on my channel. It’s a touchy subject but I tried. I made need to redo it tho.
Awesome vid Dex, I dont even own a j:duck:p but still dig the info you put out. Keep it up brother!
Thanks so much. I hear that so often. Never expected to venture off Geep peoples.
@@dexjs Your content is completely relevant to any gearhead, it doesn't matter tha brand or vehicle. And even if you dont work on much yourself it will still help the weekend mechanic trouble shooting... and it still relates to the rest of us hard heads that have beaten the hell out of a mostly stock vehicle with a cooler of beer and a place to play. cant wait to see where this channel will go... as long as you dont piss of the :duck:s 😄
Love it
Good job 👍
Another great video. Thank you
I had the same with my jeep, I took a screwdriver and turn the oil pump u til it all line up without cutting off the hold down bracket and still running good. It took me long time to get it right
great video!
Do you have a video on how you setup your under hood start button?
Cannot remember which video he did but it explains how to alter a relay under the hood. This allows you to press the spring down, spinning over your engine.
@@janetbrowder6685 aww ok, i'll try and find it. I love all of his videos!
On a Mopar the distributor gear will strip if the oil pump is locked up. You can replace the distributor gear only to trash it if you dont replace the oil pump.
I want to see quality made in USA parts again. I’m sick of expensive parts being cheap Chinese 💩.
Nice work !
Another Great Video Dex , China Ha Ha Ha !!! We fight it everyday with Semi Parts too !!!
About a year or so ago, I replaced the Distributor in 95 ZJ because the shaft bushings were worn out.
Replaced it with a Duralast Model from AutoZone.
And after ward notices that it was running a bit sluggish,
After some investigation,
I discovered that The Duralast Distributor was assembled wrong and it caused incorrect timing, it had two shim washers in the bottom in-between the gear and the housing, and the original only uses one shim .
I disassembled it and moved one shim to the top of the distributor between the housing and shaft and that corrected the issue with the timing. I have also heard of other people having timing issues with aftermarket replacement distributors with the gear being put on in the wrong position and have to remove the roll pin and turn the gear 180 degrees to correct the issue.
Please don't take this the wrong way. Could the dist. gear be off 180?????????????
Thanks bro love the information
The inner part of the balancer is the hub, the crank pulley mounts to the hub. I would've checked spark and the distributor right after hearing it crank, that was really hard cranking. Trying to fix stuff an amatuer mechanic has tried to fix is almost as bad as diagnosing cheap Chinesesium, I have even had to modify the "fancy" Summit distributors to get them to line up right
dex! i just got a 4.0 xj. you're the man!! how much would you charge me for a stage 2-3 dex build?! i'm not far... just in memphis :)
I caught the china dist gear wearing just in time... the metal is way too soft. You can swap an original hardened gear onto them. For the ones that are "casted wrong" it's not the casting... it's the gear being installed 180' out putting it a half a tooth off.
Hmmm that’s interesting. That maybe why he had it in 180. I’ll check into that if he didn’t throw it away.
@@dexjs you figured it out when you noticed the gears being ever so slightly off. You can push out the pin, reverse the gear and it should line up. But I wouldn't re-use that crappy aluminum gear. Swap over the stock one while you're there.
That is why its better to buy parts vehicles, honestly. Used OEM parts are decent.
I seen it on in 180 out on a 2.5. But It was also lower compression. I have also seen that china being out of phase also.
You get what u pay for
Is it possible to remove the distributor and install a coil rail? Or do I need to change the wiring harness
What brand of fuel pumps would you use to replace the origial with ?
I plan on investigating on the subject. We will see.
We can vote out Auto Zone fuel pumps on the start. Not sure they are gasoline compatible. 😂😂😂
Hi! I`m about to buy my first jeep wj/zj/xj. In EU we dont have a lot 4.0. There are some 4.7, but moustly 2.7 crd or 2.5 td engines. Aplication would be "hunting rig". Is it possible to get some parts from You , if i can`t find them her? I dont know in which state You live, but You sound like Texas/Arkansas. I like Your videos, keep up the good work. Greetings from Latvia.
Thanks.
Don’t know if you will see this or not or if someone could possibly let me know but will a 95 transmission work in my 2001 Jeep Cherokee ?
98-01 xj are the same. hope to get a video out soon explaining
@@dexjs alright thank you very much
what are you jumping to start from the engine bay?
Dex hire me to be your cameraman plus I'm a master tech with a 94 XJ built to boot.I would love to help ya!
How are you cranking the engine over at the fuse box?
I have the same question!
@@jerrad6320 he rips the plastic cover off the starter relay, and you can pinch it which makes it power the starter as if you were energizing the relay
@@evilbrian66 Very interesting, thank you!
What is the switch your using to crack the engine ?
Good job love the content
