I lived in Denver, and had a post office box in Cripple Creek. If we wanted to take the long way we would take this route. Even during winter- if it was open- in my 1991 Buick Regal! Some of the Best views & times in my life!!
I remember Cold Camp Rd. from a trip in 1974. Mostly the views, hairpins, and tunnels. Enjoyed watching this. If you are local, please consider doing a video of High Drive. I remember a roadside stone wall that had the elevation on it. I found a picture of that after watching your video. Thanks.
What you refer to as Gold Camp Road is a relatively recent piece of naming beyond my purview. It was originally a railroad that was financially unsuccessful; all that was of economic value (rails, ties, water tanks, etc.) was removed and used elsewhere. It crossed lands owned by the Stratton Estate and, since it has never been improved with pavement and other highway appurtenances, it may still be owned today by said estate. There are lakes that were part of the estate, very private, very beautiful. We used to rent horses in Gillette, go overland a few miles, and drop down to these lakes from the back side to poach all the fat and sassy rainbow trout you could imagine - by the gunny sack full. Our fishing gear consisted of 2 feet of line with a #10 hook on one end wrapped with a small piece of shiny cigarette package foil. We caught fish as fast as we could dump them in the gunny sacks. Truly great living back in 1937.
Super cool. I did about 6 miles of this drive from the Colorado Springs end yesterday. I didn't realize how long it was and had to turn around, but it is a very cool drive. Made me wish I had a truck or Subaru Outback or something though. Some parts of the road are very rough on my STI.
Gosh, I used to LOVE this drive. Every other Sunday or so my friend and I would drive up. It was so beautiful. (Then we'd go to Cripple Creek to gamble, lol)
We just did the whole road, including the very rough Stage Road ( at night). It took us about 2 hours in our Toyota Sienna minivan. The road was severely washboarded and washed out in a few places. To get a true idea of how 'interesting' the drive is, you need to stop at various points and get out to walk a bit, then you get a real persepetive of the road. Average speed (during the day) was about 15 mph and at night, on the Stage road, dropped to even less. So many scary hairpin turns. Our van took a real beating on 30 miles of washboards, but all in all, very fun. We saw some folks that were broke down, ( 5 kids in a compact car) that should not have been there when the road really was for 4 wheel drives.
Moved to Victor recently and love it here. Very friendly people and low crime. Lots to do around here . Jobs are plentiful. The city is putting in new streets ,and 3rd street business is growing. The mine just got a 20 year expansion "They are still getting a lot of gold out of there". Nice small town atmosphere .Wonderful place to live!
After 6:00 it's Old Stage Road. The section of Gold Camp Road between what's shown at 6:00 and many miles further down (including several tunnels), above Helen Hunt Falls, has been closed for decades. When I was a kid (in the 80's) you could drive the entire alignment.
Awesome video -
thanks for taking it,
thanks for sharing it! 🫠
