    It's the highest paved road in North America. I drove most of the way up 20 yrs ago in June. The final stretch to the top was closed because of snow. My palms sweat again just watching this. I had my wife, our two kids, her cousin and her two kids in a rental SUV. I couldn't help but imagine the headline "7 die in tragic Mt Evans accident." But we made it.

    Mt. Evans is NOT quite the highest of the many Colorado peaks over 14,000 feet. Mt. Elbert is the highest.

      I drove to the top over 40 years ago when I was young and had guts, I would not drive up now that I am older. I would ride a motorcycle maybe but that's it. When you get to the top back in the day they had a little tourist building if I remember correctly. Someone said it burned down several years ago. Lastly you could walk on top of a small hump once you are on the top and I happened to look over a ledge it looked like a 500 to 1000 foot drop. I got the hell out of that section !

    All the vehicles at the top surprised me! When my wife and I drove this in the early 90's, we were literally the only ones at the top.

    Those are my kind of people, it takes courage to drive that road, the elevations and narrowness are fantastic. I was in the Airborne for a term, and I’m not afraid of heights.
    But that road and those elevations are scary looking. Congratulations on driving it, and the same goes for the gaggle of people at the top.

      @@curtriedel5036 I drove US 6 in Utah, in a tractor trailer, and it was scary. It looked like it was about 1,000 feet to the bottom, on a steep slope. Any vehicle that went over, would probably accelerate to 100+ MPH. And it would smash up like a tin can.☠

      I must have been thinking of the gradient. Because I watched a video, and I didn’t see a drop off anywhere. But the gradient just keeps going. Oops.

      @@drm5134 Rabbit Ears pass on US 40 going into Steamboat Springs has the same, 1,000 drop off with a lake at the bottom, this was back in the early 90's, I believe that they redid the road. But anyway, the Pucker Factor was impressive.

    Can you imagine driving on this road thru very thick fog or a heavy snowstorm?! Just thinking about that raises my anxiety.

  • @atlashistorical

    awesome! now do that, but on a scraggy dirt road that’s barely traversable, has a 45° slope at some points, and can barely fit one quarter ton pickup, and you basically have most roads in northern bc.

    Mt Evans actually is NOT Colorado's highest peak. Mt. Elbert is the highest. Evans is ranked 14th. Highest ROAD though :-)

    I grew up in Denver and rode on this highway several times with my family. The funnest was when my grandma was with us. She had her eyes closed like a steel trap the entire time. Give me a million bucks and I still wouldn't do it on a bicycle.

    For those that have driven a motorcycle up Evans & Beartooth Pass, how does this compare as far as road condition, drop offs and ease of riding?
    Thanks...

      The road is wide enough for 2 1/2 cars. How wide is your motorcycle?

    • @tedpreston4155
      @tedpreston4155 2 роки тому +1

      There's not much risk of drop-offs on Mount Evans or on Beartooth Pass. They are both nice roads, with smooth pavement on well-built roadbeds. Beartooth pass is much more enjoyable on a motorcycle, and the difference is entirely the result of traffic. Mount Evans is just outside Metro Denver, so traffic is thick and slow, and any kind of wildlife near the road might lead to a traffic jam. Beartooth Pass is far from any city, so traffic keeps moving. Beartooth has far more shoulders and pull-outs where people can stop to watch wildlife without blocking the road.
      When you get your motorcycle down off Mount Evans, you'll be glad to be off the mountain. When you get over Beartooth Pass on a motorcycle, you'll be tempted to turn around and ride it again right away!
      If you get down off Mount Evans and you'd like to ride an enjoyable mountain road, hang a right at the bottom and ride over Squaw Pass toward Evergreen. You'll enjoy the ride much more than you enjoyed riding up Mount Evans! All the bicycles you saw on Mont Evans will be using Squaw Pass to get back down to the city, but they won't be such a problem as they were on Mount Evans: The shoulders on Squaw Pass are narrow, but at least there ARE shoulders. On Mount Evans (as you can see in the video) there's no place for the bicycles to move over, so traffic backs up behind them.
      If you want to enjoy the trip up Mount Evans, do it on foot: From Georgetown, ride up toward Guanella Pass. Stop at the trailhead and hike up Mount Bierstadt, which is one of the easiest 14,000 foot peaks in Colorado. When you reach the top, shinny across the "Sawtooth" ridge that stretches over to the summit of Mount Evans. Congrats! You reached the top of Mount Evans without any traffic! Now scoot back over the sawtooth ridge and hike back down the Bierstadt trail to your bike. 🙂

    I have a 1995 Corolla. Is it safe to drive mount Evans if I will be coming from California ? 🧐

    • @tedpreston4155
      @tedpreston4155 2 роки тому

      Yes. Any car that can make it from California to Colorado can get up Mount Evans and back. Be sure your brakes are in good shape: you'll ride your brakes coming down Mount Evans, and your brakes will get hot. The Forest Service stops traffic periodically to check brake temperatures. If your brakes are excessively hot, they will ask you to stop and let them cool before you continue driving down.
