I'm a medical doctor. Don't own horses. I have ridden one or two times in my life. Despite all that, I can't get enough of horseshoeing videos. This is fantastic craftsmanship
I agree. I'm also not a horse person but an animal lover and it's so gratifying to see such excellent craftsmanship done for the wellbeing of horses. 👍
That was some incredible diagnosis and work. I went to Oklahoma Horseshoeing School back in the 1980s and learned a lot. One thing I definitely learned is there is no substitute for doing the work, caring for the horse, perfecting the shoe placement and forge work, and definitely fine tuning the shoe through know how and hard work. You're a masterful farrier and your vet work on this horse is to be admired. You care about your job/calling and you are a master horseshoer. Thank you.
I once bought an ex logging horse who had heels like this on both front feet. It took months of remedial work and care to return him to health. I appreciate your fabulous work. Much respect.
Leído en YT; los caballos son inteligentes, los 2 ó 3 primeros herrados les "asusta" (??) pero pronto se dan cuenta de que van a estar más cómodos, muchos te ofrecen su pié ... haz tu magia zapatero!
@jeanday9747 most horses are chill when it comes to handling, if they have been trained/handled correctly. This horse is probably well used to getting his feet worked on.
You were so gentle with this horse. It looked as if the horse was happy you were taking care of it. Great job! I hope the hoof heals well and no other problems arises.
Thank you for explaining what you're doing! I work at a horse sanctuary, and rarely have the opportunity to ask our ferrier in-depth questions. Watching you make the shoe from scratch was incredibly cool. Some of our horses have similar shoes to help manage their laminitis, so seeing how a skilled worker fabricated it was special.
I love your craft. As an RN I can't get enough of your tough cases. How are your hands so clean and your nails so perfect? Very impressive on so many levels!
Got to be one of the best farriers I've seen. Top notch care, skills and gentle. And that horse shoe was incredibly done.. You get a ten out of a ten...
Kudos to all farriers! Their work is extremely physically taxing, and they care for our horses well by educating themselves with training and experience. I admire them.
That was very interesting. I’ve heard of these heel cracks but never seen one before. Fortunately none of my horses have ever had any injuries or problems with their feet except a poor old soul I rescued. He had foundered but we managed to fix him up and for now he’s just enjoying his twilight years in the fields with my other horses. I hope his feet continue to behave for at least a few more years so he can enjoy just being a horse.
Fabulous to watch this man…his care + expertise as he treated this horse with such dignified gentle care is humbling. Thank you for sharing your remarkable work. 🐎
I haven’t had horses for many years but I always find it fascinating how the horses feet work and how this will help them to be balanced. Excellent video.
I have no reason to watch this video but came across it…… WOW INCREDIBLE WORK! Who ever learns this man’s ways will learn something very special. This is talent!
I thought immediately that it needed copper sulphate before as soon as I saw it. I used to treat severely lame sheep here in the UK with copper sulphate and lard bandaged onto the foot. It really works.
This can also occur due to contracted heels due to improper trimming. If the lateral bar wall is scraped thin, it causes a weakness in those bars, which are like metal stanchions in engineering, which hold the heels out. When they become thin and weak, they can no longer do their job, so the heels curl inwards squeezing the frog which then inverts, causing this injury. Contracted heels can be dangerous as it can damage the cartilage, which is called sheared heels. This can end the career and life of a horse.
This is my new favorite video on this channel! I love the explanations of what is being done and why, love seeing the horse, too! And as always I love love watching the metal working! 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
You know, I think that's the cleanest, freshest pair of hoof trimmers I've ever seen in my entire life. All the ones I've ever seen from memory were old, dark, and slightly rusted from lack of use.
You can always tell how well kept and cared for a horse is by the quality of the work done on his hoofs, and If I were to ever own a horse I would want this quality of work done on him/her. THe hoof is perfectly shaped and to have custom shoes made right on the spot for the animal's needs based upon the condition and health of the hooves is the only way to go. Something about the look of a horse whose hooves are clean, perfectly shaped and smooth, like brand new tires and rims on your well kept off road truck! Well done! I bet all the other horses in the barn are all jealous now over the custom shoe this horse has for his sore foot! LOL
As the possessor of troublesome painful feet my heart goes out to the poor horses, and my gratitude to the extraordinary knowledge and care as well as the sympathetic kindness of the farrier .
This was my first time ever seeing a horseshoe being made. I thought you got them already made. I’m very impressed. That farrier has impressive skills 👍👍
Most horseshoes are bought already made. They come in a selection of sizes. The ferrier has to shape them to fit a horse’s foot. Some ferriers use a forge and heat the shoes to fit them, but many ferriers will adjust the fit cold. What we saw here is non-typical. A bar shoe like this is equivalent to a custom made orthotic. Shoes like this are a one-off in order to reinforce a foot that needs additional structural support.
The shoe is a work of art, especially since it was created by hammering white-hot metal unaided by any machines. And the horse seemed incredibly cooperative.
My friend your work is so impressive, everything I watch you work I learn something . You are going to be the best vet ever you pay so much attention to the issue at hand thank you for being you
Working with these horses daily I fail to see just how the owners don't know the horse needs some help. Keep up the great work you do for these lovely animals.
Bravo, Bravo!!! Y'all are truly champs for all horses!!! Wish we had some in the South! Not sure if we have any! But, just absolutely appreciate your excellence!!❤👏👏👏👏🙏🙏🤗
i didn't know that shoes were more than just protection from paved roads! i had no idea they could be used as correctional equipment until this channel!
My TB developed a crack just like that after having to stand in deep, sticky, adobe mud from a massive weeklong rainstorm. Where he was at the time there were no box stalls. I too used Kopertox and put him on 3/4" rubber mats under his shelter so that he could escape from the mud at least most of the day. The fissure never completely closed up and disappeared, but he was sound.
I know most farriers I’ve worked around in my area know how to smith/forge shoes; they just also regularly reuse the old shoes as much as possible unless it’s not feasible!
Its awesome seeing a man doing Gods work to help heal a majestic animal that other wise would more than likely turn lame without his intervention. Thank you for helping this animal and teaching future Farriers that will be able to learn how to keep Horses hooves in great shape! Fantastic work.
Ah you did a awesome job and the horse was just as calm, I think it knew that you was helping it,that's just really a beautiful thing to see💗 keep up the good work💪
I know nothing about horses and less about horses feet but the workmanship and know how of these farriers is just wow and the horses are so cooperative. And custom fit shoes !!!!
Every time I watch one of your videos, I'm thoroughly amazed by your craftsmanship! My farrier only uses pre-made shoes, so I don't ever get to watch a horse shoe being made basically from scratch on the spot. Absolutely awesome work!
Wow you are definitely a farrier at the top of your profession. I have multiple farriers over the years and I can honestly say that only a couple were as experienced and professional as you.🤩🤩👏👏🐴🐴🇦🇺🇦🇺
Can also pack with medicated cotton ball. Good job with your trim. I have a nice mare who was trimmed with her toe trimmed and heels left long and she had developed clubby feet and contracted heels. Broken over. We are finally getting her straightened out. She is much more cooperative while being ridden. 😊
I really enjoyed watching you. I love horses, though, I don't have one. That's probably like alot of people. Keep up the caring factor. It's good to see you do care.
Always impressive to see you just make these special horse shoes with such skills. Though I would have a hard time to not just pet the horses the whole time. I'd be too distracted.
Thank you, Sir, for sharing your skills and work with us. Your skills are obvious and there for all to see. All the people you work for should feel proud to have you. Best wishes.
These guys in Idaho are some of the very best in the profession if not the best. Not to deny there are many great ferriers out there. I just like to watch their diagnosis followed by their customized shoes made to perfection as they hammer out from memory the hoof shape. It impresses me because I know I couldn't get it right in a week or longer😒. Anyhow, keep up the fantastic work out there and keep them ponies trottin' 🧲🐎 ... Kudos from the mountains of NC!!!
Beautiful work! Do you think koppertox is better for treating a deep central sulcus infection then a treatment like tomorrow? I’ve always felt koppertox would “burn” an infection like this and tomorrow (if you can get a client to actually treat it) is a better option. Just curious of your thoughts love the channel
I love animals. I love to see animals who have some kind of injury, been neglected, other issue be fixed or treated with kindness. I have been watching videos about cows being trimmed for years, with the problems they have. What a chilled horse; he's behaviour is as impressive as the shoeing.. 👌👌

@jeanday9747 most horses are chill when it comes to handling, if they have been trained/handled correctly. This horse is probably well used to getting his feet worked on.
It's most likely sedated.
I like your style - no silly music or "Look at me" selfies. The completed shoe fitted to the horse was a work of art. 😊
In observing the horse’s behavior it seemed that he was very appreciative of the work you were doing. Once again masterful farrier!
