Starting to plan my next trip, if you would like to help make this happen, you can support at patreon.com/monkeystealspeach . Aside from that, have you checked out my latest tutorial yet? If you want to learn the classic Mantis Fist form White Ape Steals Peach, you can check it out at vimeo.com/ondemand/toutao and use the code TAIWANMASTERS to get 10% off!

Styles like LF and Tantui often get a bad name as being useless for fighting due to their large extended postures and Wushu-ish appearance. Master Han's demo has certainly shown that nothing can be further from the truth.

There are 2 types of Kung Fu teacher. The ones who keep it super close to the vest and hardly show you anything and the ones who are like "Look at all this cool stuff I know". I much prefer the second group. :)

Absolutely. I have come accros more than one martial arts teacher who wacks you when demonstrating and then disingenuously, says, "sorry, sorry are you OK?" when you know darn-well it was intentional.

Really nice! I used to train Tan Tui, but seeing them come to life is a genuine treasure. I'd only like to add that the principle of using the same patterns with and without weapons is very much present in Philipino Martial Arts. Always nice to find resemblances across the spectrum.

People make fun of Traditional Martial Arts, because they often fail under MMA rules, but there is a certain strength, timing, and speed one gets from this type of training. I'd love to see these traditional schools do more sparring/grappling so they can show what makes their styles special in sports fighting.

The Master's explanation is one of the best...

His stances are masterful. I hope to connect with you again. Sorry I could not attend the grandmaster's funeral, I had COVID at the time. Peace be Sifu Leung and Love to his family. - Thomas

I didn't get it the first one or two times I saw this video, but now I think I understand how the Southern Spear training works. Will and the Aussie couldn't lift it because they were trying to push down with their arms and weren't strong enough. At first I thought this was a tool for training a specific kind of strength that most people lack, but watching Han Ji Xiang again I realized that it's actually about teaching whole body coordination and mass transfer. When Shifu Han and eventually Ghys (ah, j'adore le "h" français qu'existe pour pas de raison) lift the pole it's because they are dropping into a deep Ma Bu and using the kinetic energy from their drop to lift the pole with very little use of their arms, somewhat akin to dropping a heavy weight on the short end of a lever to lift the long end. Like most things in the martial arts, this looks like magic when you first see it, seems obvious when someone explains it, and then turns out to be REALLY difficult when you try to do it.

The Guoshuguan was a major national effort to transform and modernize martial arts and their instruction in China. Taiwan is the best preserved repository of those traditions. Han Qing Tan was one of the top 10 finalists at the 1929 national tournament in Hangzhou. Fan Chi Sau was another significant representative of those traditions in Taiwan. He was especially respected for his Jian.
