  • Floating above Cannes 2014 was Olivier Assayas meditation on aging, celebrity, self-perception, and life itself. Inspired by the film's lead, Juliette Binoche, Assayas crafted a screenplay that would draw in Kristen Stewart and then, Chloe Moretz, all playing meta-versions of themselves or those around them. Assayas talked about the film with David Poland.

Thanks for this. Assayas is one of my fave contemporary directors.

It will be really interesting if you do another one with him about Personal Shopper, considering it got him Best Director at the "scary" Cannes, boos and all, and it was built all around Stewart after they learned what to expect of each other.

Didn't like the movie at all and came here trying to understand it a bit more. Still disappointed unfortunately, Clouds of Sils Maria feels stretched and unrealized. Nice interview though, thanks for that.

It's just an excellent character study aimed at those who are truly interested the subject matter - acting and movie-making. Maybe you were expecting something else entirely, but to call it stretched and unrealized feels very strange to me, considering that the whole thing was really well edited and told precisely the story it set out to...

That was a year old comment, I barely remember the movie at this point. However, I do remember it being very empty for most of the time, and then it ends leaning way to heavy on its own theme. The "message" was either not there or hitting me over the head with it.
Felt like a slightly more organized version of The Congress.
