My favorite part about this performance is that Chris colfer casually brought up this song to Ryan Murphy and he was like "yeah that could be funny" then he absolutely killed it in the best way possible.
He already lost his mom, and was terrified of losing his dad due to not being the son he had hoped for. That on top of always being overshadowed by his friends especially Rachel. You see all of that in this performance.

I don’t understand how Chris doesn’t do other stuff bc I have always loved his voice and his comedic timing. I would watch an entire film starring him lol. But I know he also writes and he’s probably making bank on residuals from Glee lol. Glee is so hit or miss and has so many problematic things in it but it was a special show when I was a budding queer kid. Also, I’m glad to know Rachel being hated by everyone is now a canon IRL event 🙃
This is one of my favorite songs of his. He gets so intense, especially at the beginning of it.
When I was 12 and saw this scene on TV guide, not knowing the context, I freaked out. I gut knew he was talking to his dad about being gay. And then he talked to his dad about being gay (lol). The line that stuck with me was "it wasn't for me dad" and 7 years later I've thus found this song. I was scared out of my mind at the time because it reminded me of the very thing I couldn't and didn't want to be. And it seemed that gay themed things followed me around. I was just watching TV guide as an anxiety ridden 7th grader and here was a clip I just happened to be seeing that stirred in me the deepest kind of anxiety. Anxiety because I couldn't get rid of the constant feeling of being gay myself. Clearly I was (unjustly) traumatized because I so distinctly remembered that line and the talk after about baseball and girls that lead me here today.
Looking at it now, this is a heartfelt song and talk that resonates with me. For some reason though it was so scary to me then. I'm upset I was made to feel that way. Anyway, it wasn't for me, mom. It wasn't for me, dad. It wasn't for me. It just is.

Its heartbreaking when you know the emotions he is feeling the anger,resentment,and some amount of defeat but the difference is that not all of us have what Kurt had he had the most amazing father and support system some of us dont so those feelings of resentment etc never really go away

I love this song. My favorite part is how it builds up to the stage part. The way it begins and gets more aggressive before the stage seen which shows his frustration building up till he's on stage. And the part were he sings." I have a dreaaaaam" his facial expressions reveals it all. The way it progresses as well builds up your interest and emotions so your right there with him in a way. You don't feel what he's feeling but you feel something.

This is my favorite Kurt performance. I'm bisexual but lean lesbian. And I hid it for 5 years because both my mom and sister who I live with are homophobic. I totally love that they showed this whole part in Glee, of Kurt trying to be "manly" when those stereotypes really aren't for him, just to try to get approval from his dad. I've been there. My mom is totally straight, and when we watch TV together or talk crushes I only point out the boys I like and overemphasize it to make her approve. This whole performance is so relatable, except for me it would be mom not dad. And I love the way he sings it, so fed up of doing all he can to be noticed but having it still not work. Such a great performance. I love Kurt, he's my favorite character.

This episode was when Kurt's dad and Finn's mom started dating, per Kurt's set up, but he started to regret his decision when his dad and Finn started spending a lot of time together watching football and talking girls. Kurt started doing things to get attention from his dad, like dressing in what could be called "manly" clothes, and he got a girlfriend. But he was really gay as you probably know, and hates wearing those types of clothes, and felt uncomfortable with Britney, but kept going to please his dad. This song was when he gave up because his dad still was hardly paying him any attention and kept hanging with Finn.
The one thing I don't get it's why he mentions Rachel?

super late, but also because he blew the "defying gravity" high note on purpose, and rachel won because of that. later in the series it's revealed that that was the starting block for her confidence, so if it wasn't for kurt (blowing the note), then she wouldn't have gotten all the solos
