- This is not a fight - it is a war! One of the greatest battles in the ADCC history. Ricardo Almeida who is a mad dog with a slick technique, went toe to toe with the biggest mofo from Brazil, Ricardo Arona. Almeida pushed the pace with insane sweeps, flying submissions and even suplex. Arona showed decent wrestling background and crazy strength. Unfortunately Almeida scored penalty points for his flying attacks and giving up positions, losing the fight 0:(-2).

What edged Arona against Almeida was not only his technique cause both of them seemed equally skilled it was the fact the Arona has just raw power.

he most definitely deserves to be a black belt i can tell you that. I agree he is often passive and not agressive, but his technique is definitely there and his control is some of the best in the world and if i am correct has never had a point scored against him at ADCC

yeah, arona recently got caught using roids . . . he's an awesome grappler (and mma fighter) either way though.

@ajarnguy royce used to always pull guard, nothing is wrong with it, especially if the guy is avoiding just about everything else tho. Its probably better to work for top position from the start, put pulling guard is a good plan B.

Does ADCC allow for slams? If so, at 6:04, he could have done more to capitalize on the situation. If not, then never mind.
Actually, I didn't see that much "pulling guard" there. I saw attempted flying guillotines, but those were actually honest attempts at a submission, so I guess that's open for debate.
yeah dude, dont know why hes kind of a wellrounded grappler in my opinion, with takedowns and submissions.

I don't know much about jj but as Arona I wouldn't be proud of that win. It looked more like a stalemate to me. As for the music, There will always be someone to complain about it. Oh well. Great vid.

I don't know enough of ADCC rules so I don't know why he was penalized, but to me Almeida was much more aggressive, creative, and controlling.
Arona is a guy who I have no problem believing would have been an NCAA D1 Champ had he done wrestling in the US.
Andrew SP different sport, different approach. The guys he would wrestle would be faster, stronger and the same size as him.
They definitely could win (just saying they d have a small chance at ncaa). All these guys practice with the Brazilian national team and take down guys like mat lindland. Who's a Olympic silver medalist. Same goes for judo. Guys like Dave Camarillo and lyod Irvine etc. Most adcc guys are wrestling with Olympian wrestling teams or have at least one in the gym. As goes for most adcc competitors
he out wrestled good wrestlers in ADCC and MMA he took down Dan Henderson. Even winning the fight by RNC i believe.

You couldn't have said something more superficial.. the best MMA fighter in the world (Fedor) is just been beaten by a Bjj player and by a basic Bjj move I learned on my first or second Bjj class..
Anyway, superb fight between Arona and Almeida. Arona was really one of the tops at the time...

So you need decent wrestling and some strenght to beat Ricardo Almeida , someone who wrote this description is biased , Arona has awesome bjj i sub defense skills , he was one of first bjj guys who saw that wrestling gives great advantage against pure bjj guys.You don't see much submission in ADCC nowadays just ''position chess matches''
it sucks man, im not talkin shit im a bluebelt in bjj and a little amatuer wrestling backround and for Arona to be a ADCC champion I never see him push or be the agressor in the match he just sprawls and side mounts and rides out decisions, he is by far the most un technical bjj guy ive seen in ADCC i have a hard time believing he is even a black belt
