I should have mentioned that this was the first time that I’d experienced the amp failing like this, as I’d only had it a little while before this gig. And remember, we’ve all had bad days 👍🏻
@@canigetachannel and he (GG) is still stunning on his own rights tks to his open minded talent that can make Music from every style of the world, Satriani is only still on bc of the media mechanism. Ok, he was a kinda innovator, respect him but value him on the right shelf. And ur story doesnt help him appear a nice guy , he could have had a bad day too though
It’s a pity he didn’t have any grace or awareness, I’m sure he’s messed up in the past. People forget there humble roots, like the T-Shirt says on Nita Strauss, “EGO KILLS etc”
Oh boy, I clearly remember the story. I read an interview of Satch to a french magazine at the time, in the early 90s, where he was mentioning this gig. He was complaining about the lack of maturity and respect of the young generation, with the example of the Bad4Good guitarist whom he invited onstage, who did not play a single note during the song, and ended up with a demonstrative shred. The way i understood it at the time, he interpretated it as some kind of stupid provocation. Thank you anyway for the story, brings back so many memories!!
The fact is, you all don’t realize that as a kid, Thomas was a little piece of sh!t!!! Completely out of control and disrespectful. People tried to help him and put him under their wing and he sh!t on these people! Steve vai let him barrow one of his Jem guitars and the kid cut it up with a saw before giving it back! Steve was pissed! Think about one of your friends doing that to a guitar you lent them! He would purposely do these things to people! Thomas burnt all his bridges. It’s the reason why everyone turned away from him and it’s why he never got anywhere. He had the guitar playing talent , but did not know how to treat the people who were helping him. He had everything he needed to become big, to rise above the best! But he burned his bridges way to soon. And his dad did nothing to steer him right, he only bathed in the attention his son was getting. So before you judge Joe Satriani, think about how it must have been playing a gig with a disrespectful kid you’ve put up with and already tried to help to no avail. Look at it from Joes view, the kid made not a sound during the song, then decides to turn up his overdrive pedal and plays his guitar at the end of the song when it’s closing when he wasn’t supposed to be playing and played something that wasn’t in the song or that didn’t go with the song only to show off to friends and family. He says he played over Joes ending because he wanted family and friends to hear him play because it had been a while. Like doing that really showed them anything that they haven’t already seen of him? Thomas has humbled himself now as an adult, because he knows that the way he use to be literally ruined him. No one wanted to collaborate with him anymore. I do enjoy his playing and his videos, but that’s only because he changed and bettered himself. He’s not the out of control, disrespectful kid that he use to be.
Being like that to a 14 year old is not cool at all full stop! Don’t care who you are! Glad it didn’t affect you though bro 🔥🙌 That would mess with my head for sure!
I agree, but the thing is, Joe...is really old. He was like in his 30s, which at that time was a lot different than today it was borderline fossil in rock back then, and the way he was brought up with those harsh, perfectionist jazz teachers? I'm not surprised this may have been his honest, actual reaction.....back then. It only makes any sense if he literally didn't hear the problem (did they even use in ears back then?) and all he knew was you played over his ending. Still, it was a shitty way to respond, and it would be great if he responds. But he's like what, almost 70? He probably remembers but the only way out is an apology, something I hope he does.
@@philfrank5601 oh yes man for sure. We all do stupid things we regret. Be interesting to see if he would remember this. He seems like a nice guy from interviews
@@philfrank5601 I can’t believe after all these years Joe never made a single attempt to reach out to Thomas and at least discuss what happened that night. Because man, over 30yrs is a long time to hold a grudge against a 14yr old.
Tom, your ego-free open mindedness and your inner strength are what makes me enjoy listening to your music and I was blown away the other day during one of the McR/H live feeds that you took the time to answer questions and converse with the other cats on the line. I dig how we got to see your wallpaper in the kitchen in another video! Keep being that honest open eyed shredder that you are, dog
I could have met George Lynch after a Lynch Mob show at a small club. He said he'd be at the merch table to sign stuff after the gig. But at one point he made a nasty comment to an audience member. I quickly bought my merch after the gig and left before George got to the table. Didn't want to engage him after his earlier display of attitude. Keep your heroes distant.
My wife is kind of in the biz and could have got me meet and greets with Joe or Steve Vai. Even though they're likely awesome IRL I declined each time. Paul and Billy are great though every time, though I'm sure everyone has bad days. I really don't like meeting celebs in general because they're people too and I reckon sometimes just want their space. I've seen Roberto Luongo a bunch because he lives in my town but I never bug him.
I've met Joe, Steve (Steve was my absolute god of life for decades), yngwie, Tosin, Zakk, Nuno, and Jason Richardson (my modern god)..... Every single one of them was beyond down to earth, hilarious, and a life changing experience. Meeting Vai at the time was the equivalent of a devoted church goer meeting God.... We talked about masturbation.... I referred to him as Jack Butler/Mr. Butler the entire time as well. I had Joe cracking up. Zakk was... Zakk... Had me crying laughing in seconds. Tosin left the table, 100s of people behind me waiting in line, just to go get me and only me a ton of free merch, cus I told him of the time I paid to meet AAL but the douchebags that run St. Andrews Hall in Detroit wouldn't let me in to the meet & greet for being FIVE minutes late. Nuno was super nice, kept laughing cus I kept acting like he was stoned (dude has eyes like Jim Bruer....).... Yngwie... Didn't even look up and wore sunglass. Indoors. At night. Jason and Luke Holland hung out and drank beers with me after the show...
Man I couldn't even imagine after all that time on stage with no tone that Joe would be upset at you. If anything you should have been mad at his roadie. But you handled it very well. I think I might have lost my cool. Please keep making these I'm loving these stories!
Mr McRocklin!! Finding this channel makes me feal like I found an old friend or favorite guitar player from childhood. When you came on the scene I was 18 or 19 and was a huge Vai fan. So when I heard he was gonna produce your record in Bad For Good it got my attention. Loved the record!! Even made a somewhat 4 track cover of Slow and Beautiful. Ive been playing guitar for 44 years now. Started when I was 3. Was raised listening and studying all the greats including yourself. Lots of life later it popped in my head I wonder what Thomas is doing these days and found your new record and was blown away!! Then your channel and your vids are great! All the licks during the Gem series were Fxxxxxg Awesome!! Anyway good to see you and hear you again. Keep up the good work! Hope to someday record a track with you! Cheers from Beautiful Sunny Central California!!
I don't think it was fair the way he reacted you were a kid and obviously he was an idol that you looked up to and respected quiet a bit and I can only imagine how it must have fucked with your head I hope that Joe reaches out to and clears the air your a really nice guy and for sure didn't deserve that
@@McRocklin Did you notice if there was any gritted teeth smiles on previous shows toward you.. ? That unfortunate night would have been forgivable to any 14 year old and you were the genuine professional on your approach afterwards in trying to explain the situation and accepting responsibility. Was there any animosity building up to this night that, when it in fact it happened it was maybe in Joe's head was his patience breaking moment. I mean, maybe he is/was just grumpy around teenagers ?
The part that really bugs me is the fact that you were 14 at the time, why would he act so pissy towards a 14 year old who had technical difficulties, it seems like the right thing to do as an adult would be to slap you on the back and say it's okay kid, we've all have had equipment problems at one time or another, it's no big deal I'm not mad at you, the fact that he would treat a 14 year old kid in that manner makes me question his character.
That’s mental man! Joe must have had a bad day. I had a gig years ago where a crazy drunk chick jumped up on stage and stomped on all my pedals while I was playing. Another time the fire alarm went off in the middle of a solo, couldn’t hear it of course, I look up to see everyone walking out. I’m thinking - my playing’s not that bad!
I'm so very sorry to hear this, mate. Vai and Satriani are also heros of mine along with Andy Timmons, Joe Petrucci and Guthrie Govan ... and this behavior simply doesn't make sense. Satch never gave the impressions of having a temper. You said you toured with him and his band and he definetely knew you as being reliable. This can be really crushing. I've had a gig once and didn't sleep even a full hour the night before. We were all studying music that time and were evaluted by our tutors that night. And I completely fucked up and could get a single line right ... didn't play for a while after then but picked it up after that again ... like two weeks later. Love from Germany :-)
My friends and I saw Phil Collen do an interview pre Def Leppard show by a radio van 20 years ago, we were 13.. He saw us, came over and security had to come GET HIM because it was getting so close to show time, must have talked to us for 10min. He was very kind and enjoys meeting his fans!
I remember a situation like this I had playing bass at a party where I could hardly hear my self and I was playing by ear. Anyway it was just a few classic rock songs but none of the other guys cared. Then none of us could afford beer. So then we all felt like bums
I've met Satch several times over the years & he always came across as a totally nice genuine guy. However, there's often a huge difference between someone chilling away from their work, and someone concentrating intensely on their job. I know that Satch is a perfectionist, and with it being the last song of the set, he's no doubt used to having 'the final word'. He probably thought you were just being belligerent and trying to steal the show with the last laugh or something, but he could have at least listened to your side of the story instead of ignoring you. I'm sorry to hear Satch wasn't interested in your side of the story, or even accept your apology immediately afterwards. Such a shame, as most performing artists reportedly have Spinal Tap 'bizarre gardening accident' moments like this at some point during their career, but manage to build a bridge and get over it. Time is a great healer, and I hope that Satch has built enough life experience to not hold any grudges, and you will one day get to reunite with him on stage, or even share a studio recording or two.
I remember when I got backstage during the Crystal Planet tour and met Joe. There was this drunk guy in front of me and literally grabbed Joe and hugged him and Joe just kind of laughed but when I brought my guitar to him to sign, he was like this thing should be cleaner and it was one of his own signature JS guitars! I was kinda hurt but I shook Joe’s hand and said thank you and he still is my biggest influence so I think Joe is a perfectionist and wants things to turn out the way he wants. I remember seeing his guitar strap fail during a show once and he was clearly pissed because it made him mess up. I still love Joe and I still want to meet him again! I think you are really great and handled it well even though you were young and Joe should have at least made eye contact and talked with you about what happened. Hope Joe gets a hold of you!
Omg thats all on the tech man, It's his job to recognise these things on the spot but he probs slacked off a bit considering it was the last song. I remember being scolded for my tone (rightly so, it was baaaaaaad) during music class around the same age and it basically stopped me playing with gain for a decade, I felt so embarrassed in front of the whole class playing Dr Feelgood hahaha. Funnily enough it made me a much better guitarist learning to play well clean and I fell in love styles way out of my atmosphere to what I was influenced by at the time.
Maybe they had intentionally lowered his volume and gain so the audience wouldn't be able to hear it as much, then when he cranked up the overdrive pedal to counter it they got pissed lol. Only thing I can think of that would make sense.
We need to hear Joe's side of this, to hear in his own words why he reacted that way. Stand by, although used eternally by everyone while not playing or taking a break ( which is perfectly fine) is not actually meant for that. Stand by is suppose to be only used before you actually power on your amp...depending on amp, you put it on stand by 20 seconds to 1 minute ( depends on amp) then power it up. If you are going to take a break for a while, just turn off your amp. It won't take that long to warm up the tubes if you are about to play.
I understand this from both perspectives and may have responded the same way they did. Thomas was young which should lend some grace. Based off an interpretation of Thomas’ story, if I were Joe, 2 things would upset me. My first reaction was Thomas had an inch that needed to be scratched, he felt a strong compulsion to play even though the circumstances didn't favor the situation. 2. Regardless of the reason why it happened, the situation wasn’t planned or scripted it was a reaction to circumstances. I probably would have responded the way Thomas did, I wouldn’t understand why until I was older.
WOW! Thanks for the suggestion, YT. And thanks for the feed, Sir! Haven't listened to Satch for the last decade, after totally falling for his indeed melodic instrumental approach with Flying In a Blue Dream, of which i bought on vinyl the year after it's release. Was lucky to attend three of his concerts in Denmark between 1992-1995, the first indeed a blend of Surfing With The Alien and Flying in a Blue Dream albums, the next more like Time Machine (very "live") and the last just after the blues inspired "Joe Satriani". AND during the latter concert he experienced failing amp as well (however just for a short while during Circles I think). Last album I grew a lot was Strange Beautiful Music (bying everything satch-related until then) - and then Satch-silence for me - until now, and I literally dunno actually why.
That, my friend, is some crazy ass story! Had me in stitches.....Sorry, Thomas! Lol! But at least you got over it......Joe in a rage? Can't ever imagine that....but there you go; people act in the strangest ways....
Jeez, never thought Satriani would be behaving like that towards a young kid, which he'd been touring with to boot! Great story and thanks for telling it 😁 👍🏻
It's funny how certain events we can remember as if it happened yesterday. Joe probably has no idea of the impact it had on you and most likely has forgotten all about it. I know Joe as a really kind guy, and I'm sure there is no love lost. Cheers Thomas you ROCK!!!
It’s a shame Joe behaved that way with a teenager that age! As you say, we all have bad days, and that’s one of the reasons I don’t buy “meet & greet” tickets, you never know when your hero is having a bad day, and to see him/her behave in a bad way with fans would break my heart in many pieces, so I prefer to keep only the music side of my hero. On the other side, Joe’s tech is an *sshole! I love to buy first row tickets, one of the last times I saw him live, a guy in the front row, after the gig, when all the lights are on, took a (shitty) piece of cardboard where his tech taped the playlist for Joe, the tech saw him take it and turned into a beast of rage in two seconds! Screamed things at the poor guy and scared him to death, so what the guy did was to give it back, a piece of cardboard!! If he asked fr help, I bet people would have gotten him a full sheet of cardboard and even glue and a cutter to build a nice playlist stand for Joe, but no!! He preferred to scream on a fan that committed the crime of taking that piece of cardboard. And, certainly, Joe ignored a say in car races, “gears don’t have honor word!” Shame on Joe, and so good you have that good attitude! Keep on that way! As they say, never change you are worth one thousand!!
Yeah, I've never understood people who pay for that meet n greet stuff, regardless of whether the artist is having a good day or not. I think it's one of the most frivolous things in the world. To pay someone you admire so much to have a little chat with you and a little hug. Smh. The love of a prostitute is more real than that. If I ever talk with somebody I look up to, it better be on equal terms, as normal human beings, and because that person actually wants to talk to me. Not because I pay $100 for that.
Joe is a perfectionnist i guess and je likes to keep things under control. I understand your reactions both parts. The best thing to do is to talk with him about what happened that night. I dont know but i think he probably loves what you're doing with your guitar today. There's place for everyone here. Love you both guys.🌈😎
This does sound really weird, but I'm guessing that Joe didn't realise what happened exactly and just thought Thomas was trying to upstage him or ruin the song right at the end (of course it's a pity that Thomas didn't notice the overdrive pedal a bit earlier). I'm also guessing that the reason Joe didn't even look at him and remained silent, was because he knew that Thomas was only 14, and he didn't trust himself to open his mouth and he didn't want to have a go at a kid. In other words, a misunderstanding about what actually happened. I've also heard that when Steve Vai is not happy about something, he goes quiet and looks like he is in deep thought, but you can tell he is not happy. He probably doesn't want to come across as an asshole, by blurting out what he is actually thinking. Edit: I hope that Marshal eventually went to Joe and explained that it was all their fault.
I admire the fact that Mcrockling being 14 years old tried to find a solution for his dilemma, survival instinct on ! Joe's attitude wasn't that bad, he's a perfectionist that works hard at his craft & it's his show & his guest fucked it up involuntarily. Anyway Mcrockling got a life session training / lesson that day👍🏻
Man that was one messed up situation and you probably had mixed emotions of embarrassment and anger. Then you finally get 10 seconds of distortion unfortunately at a bad time but I hope it wasn't what it seemed to me to be his pride of either you getting the last lick in after the music stopped or him getting pissed because he is definitely a perfectionist, but either way he did not handle it like a true humble nature man would have because he didnt even tell you anything. I know theres not a great guitarist and artist out there that hasn't had at least one thing go wrong while they were playing on stage. But at the moment they dont remember their mess ups. I really like Joe and just listening to you talk about it the way you did tells me your a very likable person who has a good head on his shoulders. I sure hope joe finally realizes there was no reason to react that way toward you especially because of your age and the fact that he wouldnt have wanted to get treated the same way he did you.
It’s odd that you keep saying, “I don’t get it.” Yes you do. Anyone who has ever had a show or been onstage would understand what happened. You pointed out that Joe “was in a zone”. ie; Total focus and concentration at the end of HIS show. So he probably had no idea that you had amp problems. For one thing his monitor mix (probably too early for in-ear rigs) would have very little of your amp , if any. So what he hears is someone taking a mini solo after the last note of the show. That is highly obnoxious. Your age is the only possible excuse- but some 14 year olds would know not to do that. I happened to have just played a show where we invited 2 teenage guitar players to join us for a song (the drummer’s kids) one of them was fantastic in that he knew when to, and when not to play. His brother, conversely, stepped on the vocals about 4 times with fancy showy licks. I wanted to punch him in the face. But then I thought that it might be bad for the band’s image if I’m beating up children onstage. It probably took a few minutes for Joe to process what happened (after all, he’s a musician), maybe if you had said, “My parents and childhood friends were there and I didn’t want to let them down.... or whatever. It’s just doesn’t seem cool to use his name and throw this one sided story out here and feign being baffled. When you know, as does everyone, that he is the nicest guy ever. I could be wrong. He might be a total dick.
@@johntibbles6070 This is what I was thinking too. You’ve saved me having to say it. It probably came across to Satch like this little 14 year old wasn’t respecting the set list of his performance that night and wanted all the limelight and was wanking on the guitar saying “look at me”, “look what I can do”. I’m curious to know if they have seen each other since this incident or if Satch has given him the silent treatment ever since?
@@curiositydivine You can be in the zone as much as you want, but if you can perceive the post-end bit yet -- miraculously, conveniently -- not the *lack* of tone prior to that.. c'mon, let's be real. There's a difference between a low signal from the other guitarist in your in-ear monitors and NOTHING. Someone with that much experience should be able to tell something's wrong. Especially since, by his account, Thomas was giving clear "help me" nonverbal cues. We don't need to make a million excuses. Satriani's selective awareness aside, the real disgrace is the guitar tech(s) who sat through this, unbothered, for a whole song without moving their overpaid butts.
I also have a weird Satriani story! I met him backstage in Oslo in 2000. It was like meeting God himself but then he gets pissed at you😂 I was starstuck and shy and had never used a disposable camera before. So when I was taking the picture of him and my friend and didn’t tweek it enough, he got pissed! Hilarious. But he was probably exhausted! He suddenly ran away saying i’ll be right back, but he was gone! Never came back🙂 Still one of my greatest moments in life. He got me into guitar like no one else.
This reminds me of when I met Guthrie Govan and shook his hand/ told him thanks for giving me something good to listen to. He just looked at me and said nothing. He just had this blank stare on his face. I didn't take it as anything bad, just kinda odd when you see how he seems so upbeat in all these videos. I have met so many Guitarist and would have to say Tony MacAlpine was without a doubt the most laid back I ever talked to and this was just a day after his bands gear was stolen in Texas.
+1 on Tony Macalpine. He's just an awesome human being. My wife and I met him after a show (just before the Pandemic) along with a couple of other fans and wound-up meeting him and the rest of his touring band for dinner. He's been a player that has inspired me since I started playing guitar so to sit directly across from him chatting over dinner listening to crazy stories from their past tours was just awesome to say the least. Especially since it was the last live show we went to before all the lockdowns.
I saw your band "Bad 4 Good" open along with Steve and Joe play two shows here in Norther California and you guys crushed it. I talked to Joe and Steve back stage and they both couldn't have been more excited and happy with you and the band... Just saying @McRocklin
It is odd joe being a life long musician, playing live for so many years, didnt know something was up with your amp. I have to think I'd know if I invited another guitarist to play, and his guitar sound wasnt coming out, I'd stop and take care of it, joke with the crowd that it was my fault to take heat off. Then kick back into it. Seems way overboard for someone to do that especially to a kid. Regardless of the day you had, you dont do that kind of shit to people when something was clearly wrong.
Oof. That's tough. Satch acting like that when you were 14 is just absurd. Maybe he didn't want you to play, or he was just upset at you because something went wrong that wouldn't have if you hadn't joined him on stage? Idk it's a very odd situation.
Tom, have they (Marshall) published a remedy for the AMP bug that you described? I own one and it works fine but it sounds like it would be wise to take some preventive measure(s).
@@McRocklin Ha ha ha. Yes indeed, a wonderful example of event happening at the most inconvenient possible moment. Hey I totally missed that there had been an update to correct the issue. Perhaps mine belongs to the remedied generation. I think I'll contact them (Marshall) and check if they can give me some info through the serial number. I would like be safe/have peace of mind. Thanks for answering my question Tom, much appreciated. Greetings!
I bought the scale finder app. I'm still lost trying to figure out the practice mode. Granted, i only looked at for a few minutes on the train home, so I'll probably see it as soon as i spend more than 5 minutes.
The 92’ Crate DSP did the exact same thing! Mine I had fixed around 10 years later and still it still switches to tube after about 45 minutes to this day!
I've heard Joe can be kind of stern when teaching guitar. Have you met any other guitarists Joe taught besides Vai, like Kirk Hammett or Alex Skolnick?
It’s because joe had a tough teacher. I think it was a blind guy too who if joe didn’t learn what he made him learn, he would kick him out of the lesson. Pretty sure I heard that from joes mouth. Almost sounds like a movie
@@GeorgeZimmermen That's the way a lot of olds school, crusty as hell teachers were. It wouldn't work today, if only because electric guitar isn't really a moneymaker anymore. Who would put up with that kind of abuse these days?
I saw you guys at the show at Universal Amphitheater! I remember it so well. B4G opened for Satch. You guys blew me away. I was maybe 21 at the time and couldn't believe what I was seeing. I still think Refugee is one of the all time great hard rock albums of any era. Danny's vocals are something else, and I can't believe he never went on to crush a lead singer career. Great story. Joe was probably jet lagged, lol.
I was thinking that was a really weird reaction for Satch to have, but when you mentioned how you were only 14 at the time - that’s beyond weird. Loving your videos by the way 👍
Hey there Thomas I'm listening to 91-95 original cd right now and I think that you and Hutch should remake Slap Your Hand. I think that could easily be transformed into a McRocklin/Hutch tune.
It must suck to be so lonely and miserable you trolls. This kid is a geek, looks like a geek and plays like a geek, that’s getting too personal about a legend. No respect at all.
This story sounds like every teacher, manager and owner I've ever worked for, set you up to fail; act disgusted with you. I would expect that from yngwie but fuck man, say it ain't so joe.
What a jerk Joe was being! Hey Tom I had the pleasure of seeing you at the NAMM show in Anaheim California back in 1988, I spoke to your dad for a bit and shook your hand totally amazed how awesome you were for your age WOW! You played with Gary Piel of Boston and he was playing the rhythm guitar, you guys were just jammin as he was in awe of you as well as us! A time I will always cherish. Keep on rocking Thomas. BTW you were dressed like a mini SRV. Thanks for the memories!
my old gear shop owner had a nice 5150 amp that he would put under a floor panel next to the very small stage that is in a bar in Ikast, denmark!one night he had turned it a bit higher than usual and it still sounded great, but as Rasmus the lead guitarist said! "Your sound is on smoking!" Stephan said "I know! Right!!!" ehh.... the panel was smoking and the head was about to blow! he was about to melt down the amazing head cuz it didnt vent properly, almost costed him 1K dollar!
Loving all your stories McR, either fun or cringe like this one, I'm understanding your side 100% - Even if one pro is a perfectionist and looks down on mistakes or random events, a true perfectionist aims to rise above and hear/understand every side of the story. Hope this story isn't finished and will get resolved, but as I said, 100% on your side!👊

maybe tell him you felt like it could be outtake from a Geordie Spinal Tap movie you're planning? if he still has his head up his ass at that point he just needs to sleep on it with his favourite cuddly toy. great story btw. i found myself laughing spontaneously.
As one of the other comments mentioned maybe as Joe is perfectionist, he wasn’t happy with how the song ended?!? But it is a shame as Joe has always come across as such a cool nice guy! I read the story of when Periphery toured with Dream Theater and their computer kept crashing. Apparently John Petrucci had stern words with them at the time, which I can’t imagine John being pissed off with anyone as he seems the nicest guys ever. But I guess we can all be pissed when something hasn’t gone right or how we wanted it to. Would love to hear the story about the Jason Becker tribute show!
Bad day or not, that was extremely bad form. I've played live music most of my life so I know what can happen with technical problems so I'm sure Satch would know too. He would of found out straight after what happened but he still decided to be a primadonna and treat a young kid like shit for something that was out of anyone's control. Definitely a "wanker' moment for him.
Don’t be stupid! This dude got nowhere! Hasn’t made a single contribution to music that’s worth a damn! He was a disrespectful little punk ass kid. Steve vai let him borrow one of his guitars and the kid took a saw to it! The kid was out of control!
Years ago when Joe was at Guitar Center in Chicago my son and I were standing in line outside the store to meet him and get an autograph. The bald Englishman who tours with Joe came outside and said everyone outside of the building should go home the store is full. The people in the line were upset of course. The bald Englishman was a douchbag. We just ignored him and continued to stand in line. Then he said ok, but we won’t let you inside.
It's such a shame when situations like this happen and the after effects it can have on someone. Years ago I remember reading an interview with Joe and he shared a story about how when he met Eric Clapton it was a proper letdown. Clapton was really not interested in speaking to him. We can all be dicks I suppose, just a shame when it's your hero's
Thanks for great stories and musical content. Disappointed to hear that, been a big fan of Joe for a long time. Hopefully just a bad day for him mot realizing what was going on. Those things you remember when you're 14, especially because you seem to care and have a good vibe and attitude, and you had a previous relationship. Joe was basically nice to everyone when we and several others met him and the band backstage at SDSU open air amphitheatre like 20 years ago. He was ready to not talk about guitar anymore and get out of there. My friend and I happened upon stu hamm chillin by himself before we found joe and Jonathan mover with a crowd around them in the parking lot getting ready to go. Stu was super gracious, they were nice. I'm sure sometimes they just wanted to get some rest. We're all human, some days suck, but all good vibes man
@@McRocklin yes, he's always a continuing inspiration, and you are working your way to that too man, your attitude and playing are a groovy thing. And I always like seeing the different avenues that came after Bad4good, saw Wakerman on drums with the vandals years ago and it was awesome. Music will help us move forward
@@BillDerBerg No. He has come up with new melodies. But you can only reinvent those instrumental grooves so many times. I get your point. But I still think Joe has a timeless pattern going on. One that has been stolen way to many times.
I see it by far that the technicians wanted to hide their fault to Joe not to get fired by him. Probably he never knew the real fault and left the days pass over. sure he had a bad day as we all standard humans have. I am recently new fan of you after reaching you by luck after following boss synth demos as of Alex Hutchings one. I must say that your sound is unique, feels like a luxury melodic silky schred with dramatic breaks outs into lines. At the end talking about bad situations make us release them. Unknown watchers appreciate honesty by public artists. Thanks
I've been touring with 2 30th anniversary heads for over 15 years and haven't had that issue yet thank the Lord!!! However, they can be finnicky! Its all the jumpers between the boards that cause the issues on those. Once you have those issues sorted by soldering the connections direct, its actually a very reliable head, but I always have a back-up. I'm betting Joe was pissed because it was his show and you got the last statement by playing the lick at the end. Crazy he would get so pissed but I'm sure it was one of a million things that went wrong over time and this may have just been that one last thing to push him into the red. Anyway enjoyed the story, thanks for your vids!
Being that you were a kid would have been nice for him to explain what you did wrong to help you in future situations. Maybe when you cranked up the pedal your sound became super loud in his monitor?
Cheers, it still wasn’t anywhere near my channel 3 volume. Anyway I doubt he remembers the night, and I never held anything against him. It’s all good matey 👍🏻
Not gonna lie, this makes me think of Joe differently. I'm glad you persisted in music after this. Bad day or not, a kid can't be faulted for equipment malfunction, especially in such a disrespectful way.
I would have just walked off the stage after the first 20 seconds and either sorted it out or sat down and relaxed, I certainly wouldn't have spent 3 or 4 minutes playing nothing. You were just a walk on anyway you didn't need to be there.
Exactly! And then to crank up a pedal just so he can get a part into the song before it ends is disrespectful as fuck! Anyone would have been pissed off! The dude was an out of control little punk ass kid! Steve vai let him borrow one of his beloved guitars and the kid took a saw to it and cut it up before giving it back!
This story actually reminds me of why I love live music so much - from both a performer and an audience member's perspective - because you never know what's going to happen. Things go wrong, and crazy things happen, but that unpredictability is one reason why it's so exciting.
I had an anniversary combo for a few years in the early 2000s, I didn't have that particular problem but in the years I had it mine fried a couple of of output transformers - it was traded in after the 2nd repair and replaced with a Mesa Nomad 2x12. From what I've heard since the Anniversary amp was a great idea with a few major flaws.
Damn this story made me loose a little respect for satch. Mcroklin you have been one of my favorite guitarists lately, I love the way you play. I got into kiesel guitars because of people like you and never looked back.
@@McRocklin you’re very welcome I also enjoy these stories as well as your stories on your guitars. I loved your song with Bad4Good, Nothing Great About A Hardache. But I never knew you guys got to travel with all these people and there is a rich history here you are preserving in these videos and it is presented in a very entertaining way. Many blessings man
I've been thinking about this the past couple days, and I just want to say: I am fully on Team Thomas as far as the story goes, but I don't think the overall look of name-dropping Satch in a sensational-looking video and then peddling your app is a good one. Comes across as possibly a bit exploitative, and that feeling surprised me. No hard feelings, a die hard fan for life here, but thought I'd speak up about the optics.
I should have mentioned that this was the first time that I’d experienced the amp failing like this, as I’d only had it a little while before this gig.
And remember, we’ve all had bad days 👍🏻
Piece of crap Not like Marshall
I think everyone wants to know have you and Joe spoken since that moment? Did he ever explain why he was upset?
u were only 14. Satriani's notes have been no longer interesting for decades, dont worry. Guthrie Govan would have been humble
Would be awesome if you met up now and he still just stared at the floor until you left.
Lol 😂
LOL
Wtf? How would that be awesome?
@@bengibson3955 what is called "sarcasm"..😏
Insightful and honest! Thank you so much for sharing this. 🙏
Oh man, that explains it then lol you're the man
This makes a ton of sense. Hope grapes are not sour forever.
Thank you buddy, appreciate it.

Oh damn that feeling of nothing working and nobody helping...ugh I felt shivers down my spine
This is why I'm wary of meeting my heroes. I've met Paul Gilbert a few times and Billy Sheehan and they were awesome human beings. :)
Ye, two top guys right there!
never meet your heroes.
i was great friends with one of mine. until i started going through some stuff and reached out for help.
I would have told Joe...."Hey boy , you look at me when I'm talking to you"
Love the stories!! Please keep 'em coming.
Its always great to hear about your stories. Please keep them coming ;)
Awesome of you to share this, Thomas!

I think we need these experiences in our lives. Everything bad that happened to me ended up being for the better.

Don't feel bad my pants fell down on stage show
Wouldn't it have been easier for him not to invite u? I mean no one is gonna wonder why u aren't on the stage.
He's in the wrong industry if he's a perfectionist- equipment fails all the time.
@@sean1121970 I doubt if he is in the wrong industry given where he is and where you at.
Another great story! Keep them coming!
crazy
Yea we’d definitely need Joe’s side of this.
Met Satch at The Pterodactyl club in Charlotte July '88 Surfing with the Alien tour...what a nice guy
Hi McRocklin, you're really awesome. Great job man!👍👏👏👏
Joe Satriani’s music is pretty much what you’d expect in an elevator or a Sim’s game.
I’d have sold all the albums on eBay and set fire to Surfin with the alien. Ha ha. Not really. It does seem like a weird reaction.
Hahaaaaaaa
Love you both guys.🌈😎
more an extremist i would say ;)
Its the bit when you say you were 14, for him to ignore you shows to me how professional he saw you.
Edit: I hope that Marshal eventually went to Joe and explained that it was all their fault.
saw you first as a kid and you never change only God level guitar 🤯
I admire the fact that Mcrockling being 14 years old tried to find a solution for his dilemma, survival instinct on !
Joe's attitude wasn't that bad, he's a perfectionist that works hard at his craft & it's his show & his guest fucked it up involuntarily. Anyway Mcrockling got a life session training / lesson that day👍🏻
Having chatted to Tom a few times in PMT, I can safely say he is a genuinely super friendly bloke. Rock stars take note.
Hah too kind, cheers.
Guthrie sux anyway
I saw your band "Bad 4 Good" open along with Steve and Joe play two shows here in Norther California and you guys crushed it.
I talked to Joe and Steve back stage and they both couldn't have been more excited and happy with you and the band...
Just saying
@McRocklin
Yeah, you don't start playing when the song is over.
He was too concerned about getting his licks in. I would be pissed off as well.
Oof. That's tough. Satch acting like that when you were 14 is just absurd. Maybe he didn't want you to play, or he was just upset at you because something went wrong that wouldn't have if you hadn't joined him on stage? Idk it's a very odd situation.
Judging by some of the comments, I think we need to hear from Joe ;)
Why? I doubt he remembers it. It was 1 bad show decades ago.
@@EthnHayabusa, it's "right to reply."
Tom, have they (Marshall) published a remedy for the AMP bug that you described? I own one and it works fine but it sounds like it would be wise to take some preventive measure(s).
I believe they did the update shortly after the issue was found. Sods law that it happened during this gig though ha ha.
Cheers. There’s a play button (make sure your phone isn’t muted) and you can select which way the scale plays, and set the temp etc. 👍🏻
@@McRocklin ah, yeah i did see that, did know that's what it was. See, i knew it was something right in front of me.
@@philfrank5601 to be the best, you gotta drink goats blood and also practice while getting smacked in the face by a salmon. It’s the only way!
Sounds to me like the tech never told Joe that the problem was the faulty amp,to cover his own ass.
💜💜💜
Danny’s vocals are incredible on that album. I wish it would be released again on vinyl.
Great idea! Thanks!
We definitely need to hear from Joe. I’m sure it’ll happen.
Ha, he probably has no recollection of this at all
It must suck to be so lonely and miserable you trolls. This kid is a geek, looks like a geek and plays like a geek, that’s getting too personal about a legend. No respect at all.
@@PaulEubanks I'm sure he does. but will say he doesn't remember.
@@ricksmusicroom2366 how do you play guitar like a geek ?
@@booshting3520 perfect timing and phrasing, top level techniques and melodies. ;)
Look at it from Joes view, the kid made not a sound during the song, then decides to turn up his overdrive pedal and plays his guitar at the end of the song when it’s closing when he wasn’t supposed to be playing and played something that wasn’t in the song or that didn’t go with the song.
He says he played over Joes ending because he wanted family and friends to hear him play.
Like doing that really showed them anything that they haven’t already seen of him?
Thomas has humbled himself now as an adult, because he knows that the way he use to be literally ruined him.
I do enjoy his playing and his videos, but that’s only because he changed and bettered himself. He’s not the out of control, disrespectful kid that he use to be.
maybe tell him you felt like it could be outtake from a Geordie Spinal Tap movie you're planning? if he still has his head up his ass at that point he just needs to sleep on it with his favourite cuddly toy. great story btw. i found myself laughing spontaneously.
John’s Nephew is in Periphery, for what it is worth.
did you have a conversation to him about this?
Bad day or not, that was extremely bad form. I've played live music most of my life so I know what can happen with technical problems so I'm sure Satch would know too. He would of found out straight after what happened but he still decided to be a primadonna and treat a young kid like shit for something that was out of anyone's control. Definitely a "wanker' moment for him.
WOW....
What ever JS thought of you that night, or even now, it's his problem, not yours.
But that 14year old kid has come out stronger.🤘
Don’t be stupid!
This dude got nowhere! Hasn’t made a single contribution to music that’s worth a damn!
He was a disrespectful little punk ass kid. Steve vai let him borrow one of his guitars and the kid took a saw to it!
The kid was out of control!
How dare you Thomas! Playing your guitar during an performance of guitar players, in front of other people who want to hear guitar playing! 😂
Damn - lucky he didn't put you in the corner for 8 hours of arppegio's
"I'm not getting on stage with that bastard...."
~Joe Satriani~
😂
Yeah did we ever find out who that was?
That's what I thought we'd find out in this video.
We're all human, some days suck, but all good vibes man
Absolutely, of course this is well in the past and I don’t have any hard feelings at all. Quite the opposite, he’s such a legend.
I can't imagine Joe ever getting mad about anything. He's just such a cool leveled man-loving guitar-bro kind of guy.
Aside from Chickenfoot Joe's been making the same instrumental album for three decades
@@BillDerBerg No. He has come up with new melodies. But you can only reinvent those instrumental grooves so many times. I get your point. But I still think Joe has a timeless pattern going on. One that has been stolen way to many times.
@@BillDerBerg I mean music is so played out…. It’s just the same notes over and over again.
@John J. Sanchez, id like to see you make and sell an album. Nuff said
I see it by far that the technicians wanted to hide their fault to Joe not to get fired by him.
Very interesting ,
Thanks for posting !!
Now I need to know what was going through Joe’s head. We need to know. Please contact him. Also, are you getting a PIA guitar?
No plans to get a PIA bud. They’re a damn pretty guitar though.
Spinal Tap Moment #2,463 FTW! 🤘😝🤘
Dude your guitarsinal is so wicked
Can someone explain to me no headstock guitars how?
Being that you were a kid would have been nice for him to explain what you did wrong to help you in future situations. Maybe when you cranked up the pedal your sound became super loud in his monitor?
Cheers, it still wasn’t anywhere near my channel 3 volume. Anyway I doubt he remembers the night, and I never held anything against him. It’s all good matey 👍🏻
Not gonna lie, this makes me think of Joe differently. I'm glad you persisted in music after this. Bad day or not, a kid can't be faulted for equipment malfunction, especially in such a disrespectful way.
Everyone has bad days. Remember, this is just one person’s version of the story. Joe has done many generous things for fellow musicians.
@@ZYGTropicals KEY WORD IS “KID”. IM SURE YOU WERE PERFECT WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER LOL. GET A LIFE SISTER
This story actually reminds me of why I love live music so much - from both a performer and an audience member's perspective - because you never know what's going to happen. Things go wrong, and crazy things happen, but that unpredictability is one reason why it's so exciting.
Satch is my favorite guitar player so I'm interested in hearing this
I had an anniversary combo for a few years in the early 2000s, I didn't have that particular problem but in the years I had it mine fried a couple of of output transformers - it was traded in after the 2nd repair and replaced with a Mesa Nomad 2x12. From what I've heard since the Anniversary amp was a great idea with a few major flaws.
Damn this story made me loose a little respect for satch. Mcroklin you have been one of my favorite guitarists lately, I love the way you play. I got into kiesel guitars because of people like you and never looked back.
Your app is a lifesaver man. Thank you for creating it. Best $8 I have spent in a long time
Thank you! : )
Many blessings man
My shitty day is dropping the butter lid, butterside down... worlds apart lol
I’ve got one on Steve Vai for you one day! When i join your school I’ll tell you .
Can’t wait.
Still thinking about this one...could it be that he blamed you for breaking the amp? (Given your Jem cutting past) haha!
Everyone expected it to be Yngwie lol
