  • Today I am going to take you along my 6 min increasing interval track lactate test. The test is meant to determine my effort level at certain running paces more accurately. I will explain why I do this test, especially here at altitude, however it is a good test in general (so at sea level as well).
It is early in the morning at 6:30 and I am getting some caffeine and running fuel (my oats) in to get the engine running. I need to go by bus almost an hour to get to the Kipchoge Stadium in Eldoret, let’s go run !
For the test I go every 6 min 10 seconds/kilometer faster from 3:50 (around Z2) - 3:10/km (around zone 4 to 5 here at altitude). Especially at altitude people tend to train too hard or based on HR. However lactate is especially at altitude a much better metric for effort than HR. My HR at sea level is in some workouts and paces almost similar compared to altitude, but my lactate response is most often much higher!
