    I've been trying to help a child with autism learn to ride a bike for several years now. We copied your method in this video and he was riding without training wheels within 2 hours. Amazing! You and your son did a great job putting this video together. Thank you!

    My grandson is 6 and a very timid child. He was very resistant to learning. We showed him the video and his sister got him to do the steps. He was riding in about 20 min! Once he was on the bike he didn't want to get off! Thank you for this easy technique! We didn't remove the pedals but did lower, then raise the seat. Awesome! ❤️

      I'd reccomend you have someone helping you like holding you while you ride straighten your back put equal weight/pressure on the bike then dont fear to fall after that let the person/parent take their hands off you then try to ride foward without moving/unbalancing and if that does happen just try turning your direction to which way your unbalanced and just try to ride.

    Thank you Dr Steve. I tried your method with my 6 year old grandson. I tried teaching him on a 20 inch bike but he could not reach the ground while on the seat. So we tried a 16 inch bike. He had the balancing part figured out in about 3 hours. I put the pedals back on and he was riding around pretty good. He only needs to work on starting from a dead stop. Thanks again. PS. UA-cam is awsome.

    • @DrSteveSilvestro
      @DrSteveSilvestro  6 років тому +1

      That's great! I'm glad this helped. Starting from a dead stop is tough. The best way to do it when first starting out is to have him do one strong bunny hop, then start pedaling once the bike is moving. Trying to pedal from a dead stop is tough for young kids because many don't yet have the strength to have that first pedal push them with enough force to keep them steady. Best of luck to your grandson!

    Grate video.
    I have a few comment thou. My granson started on a balance bike and mastered it at the age of 2 yrs. Next to no instruction, he figured it out by himself, steering and countersteering, keeping the balance etc. After some weeks he advanced to a Woom-2 bike with pedals, freewheel, two brakes a high steering bar and a low seat. You sit low with good oversight.
    We put a lot of time into training at slow speed, braking to a stop. Step off at the side you want to, that is full control of your lean direction as the bike coms to full stop. Sharp U-turns at low speed. All of this for him to learn not only to ride in a straight line, but to have full control of the bike. This training started the moment he was ready for it.
    In short; no support wheels, no pedals (take them off), low seat, start with duck walking and off you go. Works for toddlers and for adults, never too late.

    This should be the only way to teach a child to ride. My kids 9 and 13 were afraid to ride because I tried teaching them how I learned. Too many falls, a lot of frustration and they wanted nothing to do with it. I showed them this video and off we went. Literally less than thirty minutes later they were both riding a bike like they had been doing it all their life. It was amazing and so simple and I can't believe I never heard of this method. Bought three new bikes and the whole family has been riding everyday since. Thanks so much.

    My message will be in french.... L'été dernier, j'ai tenté par tous les moyens de faire apprendre la bicyclette à ma fille de 6 ans. Mes tentatives ont été des échecs. Ma fille se frustrait (et moi aussi) et je n'avais aucune idée comment lui faire apprendre la bicyclette. Cette année, à 7 ans, à la fonte des neiges, j'ai découvert cette vidéo et cette méthode. Après 45 minutes, ma fille pouvait faire de la bicyclette par elle-même. Elle était si heureuse et fière d'elle-même. Cette méthode a été tout à fait extraordinaire et salvatrice. Merci beaucoup d'avoir partagé cette vidéo avec nous ! C'est réellement très apprécié.

He’s never rode before and I had to get him a 20’ bike with no training wheels because the 16’ was really small for him and that’s the last size with training wheels and front brake handles. I bought a separate pair of training wheels but they’re too dang short. Please advise. I really hope someone offers a solution. Do I keep the bigger wheel bike or get the smaller one? Thank you

      @aboomalacani2732 3 роки тому

      Sam nic, I knew it was time to put the pedals back on when he asked me to! This is pretty close to how we got to that point:
      He had been tip-toeimg around (propelling himself) on a flat paved section of road that I located which had little to no traffic. He would occasionally lift his feet up a little as he went along. I counted out loud how long his feet were up each time which gave him confidence in balancing himself. That is when he asked for the pedals. Once i put the pedals back on, he lifted his feet up and the ability to balance he had developed while tip-toeing, allowed him time to get his feet on the pedals. After he mastered getting his feet on the pedals, he gradually began to pedal full revolutions.
      That process went something like
      him going from pedaling a 1/4 turn on the first effort to a half turn on the second effort before putting his toes down because he would lose his balance. It went on like that for numerous efforts but the pedal strokes gradually became longer. It is a moment of "greatness" for sure when those become full pedal strokes and are back-to-back. Next thing you know, you hear "I'm doing it!" :)
      I encouraged my son throughout the entire process, reminding him that these "steps" would add up and altogether equal him riding all by himself. Going further, I told him that it is "normal" for this to take time and be a challenge but it would be worth it. Breaking the steps down into 10-15 min sessions also kept my son from getting too impatient, tired and discouraged. I hope this helps.

    First off ,you have to get them on the right size bike start off with a balance bike then work your wake up to a bigger bike my son learn how to ride a pedal bike after one year on a balance bike and he's 4 you don't want to take a chain off a bike and pedals to where he's going to take corners and was cranks are going to hit the ground and he's going to fall and get hurt?

    I've come to understand that apparently children today have a harder time learning to ride a bike than kids of my generation did. I wonder why? Nobody really taught my generation how. I had training wheels for exactly one push by my dad and a ten foot ride. I turned around and said "dad, can you take these darn things off please?" With a proud smile on his face off they came and I zipped away on the new bike I had. Full disclosure I had a tricycle at 3 or 4 so riding a bike at 5 was easy. I guess kids don't have tricycles anymore.

      Yup, those are awesome (and I have links to them in the article linked in the video description). This is one way to turn a regular bike into a balance bike in case you already had a regular bike. Happy riding!

    My son is about to turn 12 and is autistic. I've tried to teach him how to ride a bike a few times over the years but I've never succeeded. Do you think this is a good way for him to learn?

    • @DrSteveSilvestro
      @DrSteveSilvestro  4 роки тому

      Hi Shannon-I think this is definitely a good way to try. There are comments below from other families whose children have learned with this approach in the face of various physical and developmental challenges. It’s certainly worth a try. Best of luck!

    I can only partly ride a bike w out training wheels.. I tried one training wheel you want to push more weight on the part with the training wheel side :p

    • @DrSteveSilvestro
      @DrSteveSilvestro  6 років тому

      You might find that using this method with the training wheels off entirely is more helpful. Keeping the training wheels on, even just one, acts like a crutch that keeps you from learning the best way to balance. Give it a try--I know you'll get there!
