Great comparison video. The reason the Helix missed those marks are because you have to fully understand Humminbird's 2D sonar, and you have to understand what the trade off is for possibly missing marks higher up in the water column. Humminbird has 3 settings for their 2D sonar (Full, 25 - 42 degree 150 - 220Khz) (Wide, 42 degrees 140 - 200Khz) (Narrow, 25 degrees 180 - 240Khz). Lowrance is operating at 83Khz which has a 60 degree cone angle. The widest cone angle Humminbird has is 42 degrees with the dual spectrum chirp sonar, 18 degrees less than Lowrance. In Humminbird's earlier Helix models they had dual beam sonar which had 83Khz 60 degree cone angle, but to get better target separation they phased out the dual beam and went to dual spectrum. There lays the trade off with having a more narrow cone angle you will miss marks especially higher up in the water column, but you will get better target separation on marks within the cone. The dual spectrum setting is the one with 150 -220Khz also labeled (Full) in the settings which is transmitting a 25 degree beam, and a 42 degree beam at the same time. Compared to 83Khz side by side the bird will miss marks simply because the beam is more narrow. Also the bird needs to be tweaked to get to most out of it. I subscribed.
Ok I completely understand that. Thanks for the information I’m always interested in learning more about them. Thank you for taking the time to break that down for me and others to learn. Also thanks for watching and subcribing.
Good info. However I believe you should have set the same sensitivity, color palette and contrast for both units. On the Lowrance 2d sonar looks like the sensitivity is higher than the Hummingbirds.
Great suggestions I’ll make sure and do that in the future. Thank you and thanks for watching
I agree, the gain is obviously higher on the Lowrance 2d, and why the heck didn't you use the same colors.
@@bookooc5605
Take it easy man !
I also would have liked to see the helix Di at the same time as the lowrance Di fish id overlay vs only getting to see the helix sonar.
Great comparison. I run the Ti2 on my boat and love it. The Genisis Live mapping feature is an essential tool for me since Navionics doesn’t show anything in the rivers in my area. It has truly changed how I fish!!!
Genisis Live mapping? Is that better in your opinion that navionics?
In my case yes, because Navionics doesn’t show any contours in my river system. Map is essentially blank. Genesis shows great detail. I map areas by “mowing the lawn” over the area in question.
@@CreoleCatfishing what is the live mapping feature?
Live mapping allows me to create my own detailed contour maps. Navionics isn’t available in my area of the rivers, so it’s been crucial. You simply turn the feature on, and go over the area like you’re mowing a lawn. It’ll generate the map in real time as you’re moving along. Maps can then be saved and viewed at any time.
@@CreoleCatfishing Thanks dude for the explanation!!! Just got me this unit today!
I do not think my local lakes in the maps either. Thanks to u i feel better knowing i can scan it myself :)
Well considering I use my Sonar to find structure and not fish it looks like I made a wise choice in my Humminbird Helix 9, I love it and don't have any complaints but that Lowrance is kind of cool.
Thank you very much bro. Now I realise that for easy usage and down scan Lowrance is the best but for side scan Humminbird is.
Elite TI2 is NOT an enty level unit! It's a midrange unit. Entry level is the Hook series. 😉
Other then that, awesome comparison video. 👍👍
really need to have the same image colors. lowrance has a similar color and once you adjust the contrast, the side imaging looks just as good
Good point!
My buddy has the Lowrance and I have the helix mega and the differences you showed is exactly what I have seen myself. Also think di on humminbird is a little more defined.
Nice comparison and great video. No question the MSI is better on the Bird. It should be, HB came out with it first! The reason I am not a Lowrance guy, they're bottom level fish finders, i.e. Hook series are just plain garbage! Bottom level HB is a Helix 5 and those are so far superior. Any amount of money you spend on a Bird, you'll get a good unit. To get a good Lowrance, you need to drop a hell of a lot more. In addition, I am all about the One Boat Network with MK, HB, Cannon and Talons / Raptors. No one has that. Most everyone uses a MK trolling motor. Being able to Hook your Helix up is a game changer. Lowrance and MotorGuide....hahahaha
You should have changed the color of the sidescan both to yellow, blue doesn't show the contrast as well as yellow!
Agreed
Thanks for thus video! My boat burnt at a vrbo rental recently, I had a hard time deciding what until to go with and I had the Lowrance elite fs on it, loved the unit and the whole time I wish I had bought the cheaper model in the 12 inch vs paying about the same to have the best model in the 7 inch. This video helped me make my mind up not only on that, but it made me want to stick with Lowrance. Really appreciated!
Thank you and glad it helped you out.
Great breakdown! I have both as well. Running multiple units has it advantages. Thanks for the information! Nobody works harder to help the catfish community with tips, tricks and techniques!
Great vid just a note Ti2 also has zoom in on side scan just tap the target and hit the zoom keys
Thank you and you’re absolutely right it does. Hummingbird seems to be a little clearer on the zoomed in image. Thanks for watching
You can scroll back on the Solix...but I see a good purpose in having both Lowrance and humminbird
Great video. However, comparing these units in the same size screen would be a little more fair.
Those units both cost about the same
I have a Helix 7,I like it a lot. Good comparison, I enjoyed it.
Great vid, a couple things to keep in mind, as someone has already said, the hummingbird solix allows you to scroll back in history. Were these units running factory settings? As for side imaging, looks like the lowrance was running 800 khz vs the bird running in mega SI. What frequency was used on the lowrance 2D? Otherwise excellent video and great comparisons.
Well, this apparently explains why i catch fish I don't see on my Helix 2D. Thanks Chris!!!
2D has hidden zones. No difference which make. Everything out of the distance between ducer and bottom is hidden on the bottom. It draws bottom to the nearist distance measured.
@@jaakvaarsi568 I wasn't seeing fish at all, under the boat, or out of the cone. I got rid of the Helix and went to a Lowrance Elite TI2, and it was like fishing on a completely different lake. Fish are everywhere now. I have also dramatically increased my catch rate.
@@davidwalker6438 so you're happy with the lowrance?
@@sayetka heck yeah. love it.
@@davidwalker6438 Pallete 13 for Lowrance is very best ...
Good video bud. Things like this can help people decide on hard decisions on which to choose
Yes sir
Thanks for the video Chris! Thanks for taking the time to explain the difference in units.
Hi, what is a especifc model of a humminbird sonar? And what a frequences used in a test?
The only issue I have here is it is not a fair comparison on either 2D or SI. On 2D you have the Lowrance set to 83 kHz and HB set to High Chirp which means you have a larger cone on the Lowrance. On SI you have HB set to Mega and Lowrance set to 800 which means HB will be sharper.
All very good points. And thank you for bringing that up. I’ll have to do this one a little better next time.
Lowrance shows better glowing fish on sidescan and this huge advantage (9:25). Humi it too contrasted and shadow
Excellent video, thanks so much for taking the time. Super helpful.
Good comparison Chris. The HB has 3 buttons on the right that you can use for shortcuts to 3 favorite screen. Can I ask what range you has the HB SI set on
Very cool, they must be on different frequency to not interfere with each.
Can you compare the down image and 200/83 mhz.
I definitely will
I love my Ti2's. Thanks for the review.
I have a elite ti2 and thinking of getting hummingbird helix 7 mega si whatever??? Long names - commenting before vid is over but see the elite it is showing a lot of debris in the water? Returns while HB is clear??
I noticed a Lowrance look like it had Navionics on it what about the hummingbird can you do that split screen with Navionics on it too
Thanks for the vid, I’m buying one or the other next week. Question: Would the color of the side image make a difference?
What unit did you end up going with? I gotta make that decision as well soon.
Thanks
It depends on the person some people like one color over the other but it’s mainly personal preference
Choose the color that you can see the greatest contrast between a return and the shadow of the beam. I have Gen 3 HDS and I find that the orange palette works best for my eyes. If I see an almost white return with a shadow behind it then I know that is a fish on the side scan
Great video and explanation of the units..Very helpful thank you!
@chris souders hey Chris thanks for the video very helpful have a question for you on the Lowrance side imaging is the right side of the screen the right side of your boat or is it flipped?? Also what do you think about the Garmins?? Thanks
As long as u mount the trans on the transom it will not be inverted
Hey Chris i got a question for you. How did you set both of your units up so they will not inter fear with each other what is your setting and were and how did you mount both of your transducers. Because i seen this video and loved it i love catfishing so i got another unit i have the same humminbird as you just in. 7in sreen and i got a lowrance elite ti2 7in and i got on the water to day and there is alot of interference and i was just wondering how to fix it because i love the birds Si and charts and maps but i love the lowrance 2D and Di with the fish reveal.. So if you could help me out i would really appreciate it i know your a busy man thanks... Adam
I will actually have a vid your about this very soon but all you have to do is make sure they are on different frequencies.
@@slungercatoutdoors ok thanks man.. And can't wair
3:15 ..image contrast appears higher on the Bird. Increasing image contrast can/does make an image appear sharper.
Can't beat the side imaging on the hummingbird
Agree, but I find the lowrance interface easier to use. 80% I use down image vs side now.
Not sure if anyone jas mentioned this yet.. But the screen size of 12" has more pixels to devote to smaller fish even on the 2d image vs the 9".. Also was this a g1 2 or 3 helix?
I have a Helix 7 GN3. The 2D is very good.
Good stuff so how do anchor up to fish the rocks or ledges once you see good stuff? I see stuff on my unit just not sure exactly how to fish it.
Does the Lowrance have imaging similar or equivalent to Humminbird Mega imaging?
Can you mark a waypoint on the hummingbird and it show up on the lowrance. Our which one do you mark your waypoints with
Great question but no you can't. But you can mark a waypoint on both units which is what i do.
chris do you think the humminbird mega 360 is a big help for catfishing
Not in my opinion it’s cool to play around with but unless it’s live it could be gone before you actually see it.
Lowrance for 2d and DI. Bird for SI and mapping. Wait and see on Live....
Change the Lowrance to the same color pallet, you know the brown shows everything better. Plus, you have three screens up on the Lowrance. And, you could pull the menu off the screen on the Lowrance. And set it to go away automatically
great video , great comparison , thank you Chris
In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.
Good info. Thanks Chris. 🎣
Thank You
WOW very interesting and great compare
Great info Chris, are these two comparable in price range as well? I have been thinking of getting one for a 14 foot jon boat.
Hi. I see in other vids you are running the carbon unit. Is there a reason why you are using the carbon compared to the ti unit. I have a 9" carbon gen 3. I have found a great deal on the ti 12 unit and in tempted to purchase the ti 12 unit tonite for 2 d and down scan. And use the 9 carbon for a maps only. Any input from ya would be great. I do have a 7 carbon gem 3 up front that I dont even use. Was think also of moving the 7 to the helm also and using that for just maps opening up the 9 for just sonar. But I'm torn because of the pixels. I know the 12 inch units have a higher amount of pixels. Witch would lead me to believe you would get a better picture when using 2d or down scan and side scan. Any word of wisdom you could toss my way would be great. Thanks. Tommy
Yeah absolutely so I would recommend that you get the biggest size you possibly can. I really like the 12 just because it’s easier for me to see everything. The TI unit is a very very good unit and I would recommend it to anybody. I always used the HDS units but didn’t wanna spend the money for a live unit this time. And also wanted to be able to show viewers that you didn’t have to spend that kind of money to be able to get a good picture and catch good fish.
The HDS Carbon is more capable than an Elite Ti2. A speedier processor, more networking capabilities and connectors, it's just higher end despite its age. I wouldn't upgrade from it unless we were talking about an HDS Live, but I don't think it's worth it being just one gen newer than the Carbon.
Keep in mind the HDS 9 Carbon has roughly the same resolution the Elite Ti2 12 does, but Carbon has better screen technology. An IPS screen has better viewing angles than a TFT display. On top of that the Carbon LCD display has a glass layer while the Elite Ti2 has a plastic layer which in my opinion requires more pressure for each input.
Yes, a deal is a deal but if Elite Ti2 was on sale, I suspect a newer Elite is just right around the corner. I'd wait a few months, my 2c
How deep is the probe?
Great comparison video
Great info - am I correct in seeing the Lowrance depth limit was 40' and Humminbird was 60'? Around 3:52
They are both showing 33'
Thank you for this video. Great information.
Does the humming bird helix 9 have the down imaging like Lowrance?
I love the mapping on my humminbird. Were those upgraded transducers?
Awesome video Chris! Thanks
Try running your si on your lowrance on the bottom horizontally rather than vertical so your not looking at ao much history and you can use more screen resolution for si and then run mapping sonar and possibly even di on the top half of the screen and then run the si on 455
Thanks for the suggestion I’ll give it a try. Thanks for watching
Thx for the great clip!
Greetings from Germany
Is that your new boat? If so did or can you give tour of it?
Why not have it the same color?
Nice video, bought a ti2 and haven't been able to get out on the water with it yet.
Great video!
Thanks sir!
How much is lowrance and do they make bigger screen
are you running both units on the same battery?
Very helpful. Thanks
What setting are you running on the bird?
what LOWRANCE is this one exactly please ?
That is a Elite ti2 12
Would any sonar help me with crabbing?
That’s a good question and I’d have to say yes. Reason being is you would be able to tell the deaths in areas they prefer to be able to concentrate yourself in those specific areas
Thanks now I'm torn even more what to put on my boat lol
Go garmin
@@frankdebellis2879 I did. Uhd 95sv and 73cv
@@scottscaneh u happy with the decision
@@frankdebellis2879 I'm in the installation process so I haven't used them yet. Should have them installed this weekend
What frequency did you have each unit on?
The lowrance was on 83 and the himminbird was on high chirp
Which is a little of a disadvantage for the humminbird.
Great Video ,
What transducers are on each unit
I'm guessing no one noticed one of these graph's has flip left right turned on, not sure which it is because all I can see is your dash but at the 5:00 mark your pointing at the screen mentioning a ledge on the lowrance which is on the right side of the side scan image whereas the hummingbird is showing the same ledge on the left side of the side scan image, so definitely you need to drive past some concrete steps at the boat ramp and figure out which one is correct. If it's the hummingbird you may have your transducer improperly mounted or maybe theirs a flip option in the settings 🤷
Not really sure what you seen but both are mounted properly. And don’t need flipped
I time stamped the what I saw in the comment 5:00 pretty clear that if your graph on the left shows a perticuliar structure in on the left of the screen then the graph on the right should show the same thing on the left on the screen, there is no variance between companies left is left with lowrance and left is left with hummingbird , I'm not trolling bud I'm making a very obvious observation. That's why I said you need to drive your boat past a boat ramp that has those core engineer concrete steps and see if both graphs show the steps opposite on the screen, one graph showing the steps on the left and the other grass show in the steps on the right I don't know how much plainer I can say it 🤦
Was the Hummingbird using MEGA imaging?
yes it was
Lol of course it was! Turn on fish reveal on the ti2 side scan and see
Kewl
Why not same colors both?
Solid! Thanks!
if your going to compare make both screens the same size
i hate the "Hey, what's up everybody" intro we see so often on YT videos... The videos that start with "Hi, I'm Chris Souders and today I'm going to compare X to Y" sound so much more professional.
It looks like you have the sensitivity turned way down on the Humminbird 2D, mine usually shows much more in water floating debris and small bait fish like your Lowrance is showing...
Almost equal the Lowrance colour is in blue has the same colour as the hummingbird should of made them the same colour that’s the only thing u forgot to change
Do U even know how to operate the H_Bird? Why didn't U change a Single Menu on the H_B during the entire video? I myself could've easily proven otherwise - Pretty Bias Video Bud !
Hard to listen since you say HUMMINGBIRD and not Humminbird. Lol. Where is the “G”?
Not Hummingbird. Hummin*Bird
Lol glad you noticed that!! I didn’t even pick up on that! Thank You
