Your tutorial seems simple enough :-) Thank you. I picked fresh flowers of a very fragrant white Phlox (a perennial), packed them in a glass jar, poured to cover with white gin (Beefeater, since that's all I had ). In 6 moths, we'll see how it went :-) If the "experiment" happen to be successful, I'll be looking forward trying to "intoxicate" Oriental Lilly flowers (they are so, so fragrant!) :-)

Hi, sorry I'm abit late, I wanted to get into this sort of thing, and im wondering a few things, can I use rubbing alcohol? can I basically use any flower that has a smell? Does the lid have to be air tight on the container? And if I use gin and then eventually get to the point of perfume, wouldn't the sugar in the gin make the perfume kind of sticky when sprayed on skin? Thankyou.
@@Mommyvlogger123 wow that was a while ago, I actually attempted this with isopropyl alcohol, i did it for about 8 months and the alcohol turned black and it just smelt like nearly dead flowers, and you could still smell the alcohol very strongly, I'm yet to try this with gin but when spring comes back around I will be starting again and hopefully have better results
This is so cool! I have a few questions if you wouldn't mind answering: 1- if the lid is kept on, how does the alcohol end up evaporating? 2-How cool does the temperature need to be storage-wise? 3- do you think cutting/ripping apart the petals before putting them into the jar might speed up the extracting process??
I used a recycle jar that didn't have in your tight fit. It's a very good question. You wouldn't want all the alcohol to evaporate because it acts as a preservative. But over time it kind of organically evaporates. Breaking your petals apart is a very good idea and will help to release more oils sooner.. And a cool dark place is the best place to store your perfume. Keeping it around 60° but not letting it exceed 80 is best. And keeping it from being exposed to sunlight will help also. Just like regular perfume or perfume oils. Thank you for your questions.. And the best of luck to you making a fantastic homemade perfume. PS, do a little research some people prefer glycerin over alcohol.
+Scott Riddle So I soaked the flowers overnight and so far, it smells moldy. Like old flowers. There's a slight aroma from the actual flowers but mostly it just smells like alcohol and old flowers. What did I do wrong? I feel like covering it with a lid traps in the rotted smell. Should I try again but this time leave it uncovered?
+Aubrie Keddington - sometimes that earthy smell is from if you added too much organic material that was not the flower petal and did not contain the oil. Or you may have added contaminated flowers to it. They were fresh correct? But you have to understand that the alcohol is a preservatives and this is a slow process. It takes hundreds of flowers and months before you even get a sense that will stick to your skin for a half hour. Patients patients. What type of flower did you use? Some flowers are better than others for extracting sent. I have the best success with citrus blossoms, lavender and roses. Stephanotis is great also! But some lovely smelling flowers just don't produce a good scent. You will learn through trial and error.
I needed to know if I pluck both new and old blossoms also what liquid are they soaking into? Hi Riddle, this is the first time on your beautiful, ancient knowledge channel. How much gin do you use, and do you keep adding the gin to cover the flowers.
Hello! Yes- I do. Best to use a larger jar- but from time to time it will squeeze all the liquid from the flowers - and start adding fresh flowers. Thanks for watching !;)
Hi Scott, thank you for the response. I love this site. There are few are far between when it comes to long ago recipes for beauty food, home made things. How much gin do you use in the quart jar?
+Goldstar 36 - I try to keep the gin just above the amount of flowers that I have. As the amount increases . You can add more gin. This helps to keep the oils from your materials more concentrated .💓
Are there some plants that dont have good transfer of odor to alcohol? maybe use a fat or oil? My old awesome smelling perfume (base of olive oil) is smelling old now. Wonder if that nasturtium would be good in alcohol or the peppery flavor would be too strong. Our apple blooms are nice now and white sweet clover.
@@ScottRiddleArtist , will try. Had put myrrh and frankincense resin in the oil jar (from health food store) . Find the Vodka smells, might find another alcohol.
I want to try this! I have kosher date vodka. Would that work as a base? I don’t have a garden and may not pick up fragrant flowers daily. Should I experiment with a very small batch? Does meson jar stay in sun or shade? Does concoction stay open or with a lid on, or perhaps covered with just a cheesecloth?
Lisa G - Hi Lisa. I think the alcohol content would be sufficient. But you do have to stand it takes hundreds and thousands of flowers to extract enough oil to make a fragrance. Perhaps you could supplement with dried flowers from an online source? What is your goal sent?
Scott Riddle Thanks for that info! I hadn’t thought of dry flowers. My goal scent is open to whatever I find, really. I don’t wear perfume (or deodorant or make up). I’m really a very natural person. I don’t know squat about flowers. I was impressed with your knowledge. Two years ago I discovered a flower that I fell in love with the scent. I could have died smelling that and been happy. I later learned it was called the oak leaf hydrangea. It was the pink and white version. Do you know if those could be found online? I don’t have a lot of money to spend, and just moved to Florida, so that’s why I wanted to try this, since I was hoping various flowers would be available year round. Thanks.
Scott Riddle Yes! I added some of my homemade vanilla that I used that same date vodka with. I remember you mentioned vanilla in your video. I was thinking of adding some dried fruit, perhaps? I have a dehydrator. Maybe some fresh lemon peel? I’m not sure what herbs would really work, as they seem to be not as “sweet” as floral or fruit scents.
Hi! I have a question...I grow moonvines and they have beautiful large white flowers that bloom at night. They smell great! However as soon as I pick a flower, the scent disappears! In fact you can’t smell it u til the flower is open all the way either. And the blooms only last one night and you can’t smell it when the flower starts to wilt in the morning. So any advice on how to make perfume from this? It’s a sweet clean smell, but it’s bizarre that as soon as it’s picked, you smell nothing.
I just picked a bunch of gardenia petals from my garden, put them in a glass jar and covered with denatured perfumers alcohol. I noticed the petals turned brown as soon as I covered them in the alcohol, is this normal? Should I have used vodka?
indefinitely narcissist. Paper whites if you have any. It’s soon going to be lilac season. Depending what part of the country you live in. You can take a lilacs and put them in honey. And it makes a super lovely edible floral honey. You can also use honeysuckle. I think daffodils may be toxic though? It’s one of the few bulbs I have that the gophers don’t try and eat.
Vodka - there are also glycerin methods- or you can buy a still. And extract the oil threw a stem method. But you will need a lot of organic materials .

I would think it is definitely animal friendly. But an animal may be confused or offended by the smell of perfume. I read that the human something was a fallacy at least in regards to baby birds. I would suggest just wearing gloves when you worked with the birdhouse.

Why do you have to wait so long? Isnt a couple of weeks in the gin enough to have a descent amount of fragrance?
