Making Perfume from Violets: Enfleurage | Fresh P
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 бер 2014
- An enfleurage is one of the ways you can turn flowers, in this case violets, into essential oil or perfume. It's a multi day process where fresh flowers are pressed into a thin layer of oil repeatedly until the oil is saturated with the floral essence. To extract the essential oil the oil is washed with alcohol to extract the essential oil from the remaining fat. the fat can then be used to make soap, eye makeup remover or body butter. Once the alcohol has evaporated you're left with the essential oil.

I was just curious about how to make a perfume, but this is the most relaxing and wholesome thing I have seen in my whole life. You and your family are so cute together, have my best wishes! ❤️
Thank you Love. ✨

just wanted to say that I really enjoyed watching your interaction with these children! so present, calm and respectful... it was inspiring 🌹🌸🌺
+Victoria Butanu thank you Love. These aren't BFs little ones, they're pretty special.
You are a beautiful person! You remind me of my girls when they were young and experimenting with life. When you brought in those little girls, you were just another one of them. What a beautiful spirit. You should have had them standing on the counter with their shoes and sock off squishing violets like grapes for wine. If this work, you could sell it as the perfume of little angels. Kids remember people like you and add part of you to their lives. What a great influence you are.
Jim, you certainly know how to touch someone's soul. Thank you for writing your impression so beautifully. I love those little kids so much, their Mom is a very special woman, a kindred sister of mine. They are loved as if they were my own. How can you share with them in any other way? Thank you for warming my heart.
I just love flower's ,just the coler and fresh scent is enough to make a person happy . Thank you for sharing :)
You're so welcome. I love the fragrance, it's my absolute favorite.
This is a wonderful way to extract the life essence from the flowers, from my reading and understanding of Cold Enfleurage (and I'm sure there are more than one way) extraction the process is to use glass or some sort of flat surface (not sure if it's because metals effect in any way or not, I know often in chemistry it's recommended not to use metals at times) and to spread the fats on both sides, stacking them as high as you want to go.. one on top of the other. The flowers die and give up their essence after 3-4 days and that's when you change the flowers, replacing them (and I know IT'S A LOT of flowers) 10-20 times to fully saturate your fats, once your fats are completely saturated or you're satisfied with saturation level or used all your flowers, you then gather your fats into a large sanitized mason jar w/lid and add in 2-3 times the volume of your fats - 90% Ethyl alcohol (the kind you can drink, in liquor stores it's called Everclear, or you can use perfumer's alcohol which is rather expensive and hard to find, the reason you don't want to use Isopropyl or rubbing alcohol is because it has it's own aroma). You then allow time for the alcohol to pull the oil from the fats and separate. I will be doing a Cold Enfleurage of Rose or maybe Tuberose starting in the next day or two and will make videos along the way, so if you're interested in following along you can subscribe to my channel!
Fabulous, thank you so much. I'd like to add that violets are easily crushed, which changes their aroma, so stacking some flowers might not be the best. Thank you for completing this process. I'd love to put your links below this video and get my interested subs over to your channel. Yay.
As I've been reading more it seems that different flowers give up their life/ release aroma after a different number of days according to each flower, I think that I've settled on Jasmine (if I can find some) since I think it will blend well into a fragrance I'm creating, hopefully I'll be picking some up later today.
I'm interested. Please ....show us the video 🙌🙌😇
@@bronson8062 it's called volatile and essential oils, not life essence. That's not a thing.
If you ever find that you need information on things like extraction, distillation etc. consult an organic chemist.. .Now this isn't a chemist that's totally hip and green (although I suppose he or she could be ) but is one that works in the field of synthesis, generally, utilizing carbon and hydrogen based molecules and who also have the techniques that would be beneficial to extraction of violet fragrance. Knowing something about the molecule itself can be very helpful... knowing whether it is miscible in a polar or non polar solvent, if it is water soluble etc. can help you tweak your process and choose chemicals that will make your extraction MUCH more efficient, yielding much higher volumes of essential oil from your biomass. Some others that could help could also be botanists in a biology department at a university... A lot of professors will entertain emails or even phone calls from folks who are not students and are more than happy to help you out, provided they're not in a hurry to get to their next class, holding office hours or trying to eat lunch. haha. I hope that'll help you out... I will see if I can find some information on the actual essential oil and I may return with some helpful chemistry/laboratory technique that can help you out.
+Aaron Thomas I would LOVE information. Thank you.
Who is here after daydreamer drama 😂😂😂
I found her explanation in a comment far below for not posting the second part:
'I made a terrible mistake in using a jar that had previously contained cumin. it scented the entire batch and by then violet season was over. If I am home this spring, when the violets are out, I'll recreate the scented oil and film part 2. i'm very sorry that I couldn't redo it last spring. '
+Jo Fichou thank you.
The gasket had been washed but dainty smelled of cumin
Well, this is where you need to make use of the magic of TV/Video. We can't smell it. So you could a) just finish the procedure, so that we know how to complete the process, and ignore that it has a cumin scent; b) finish the procedure, acknowledge the cumin mistake, and we can learn from your experience.
I think she forgot about the video LOL
@@Thefreshp my dear, don't worry, with violets and cumin reminiscence you still have an interesting accord commonly associated with men perfumes but not only. Pair it with some camphoraceous plants or flowers, citruses, mint, gardenia and you can have a fougere for men
2 minutes in and I'm subscribing.
You're joy is contagious and your energy just feels so lovely. :)
Can't wait to see how it comes out. My wife loves violets, she would enjoy this. If it works for you I imagine I will give it a try in a couple weeks when our violets come in.
I will. If it works she will adore you even more!
That's great! I stock up on brownie points for when I track snow/mud into the kitchen.
Part II won't be up for another week or so. The flowers are still doing their thing.
Was this ever posted (part 2?)
+Ashley Lebedev nope
Kool Kat thanks! I was just searching for it. That makes me so sad... I'll have to do it myself! 😉
+Kimber Rose np i was kinda upset that she never did it good luck on making it :)

Still no second video?? It's been 6 years, I'd love to see how this turns out
Guessing that it was a bit of a fail. People don't like to share failures, or perhaps something else happened. Will we ever know?
I talk about it in the comments.

I love how relaxing your farm looks. I've lived on a farm my whole life, and it makes me second guess leaving 😅
I'm going to do this with my Tuscan jasmine. It smells sooo good. Also, sweet peas, roses, linden, Lily of the valley, gardenia (cape jasmine) and those snowdrops that smell like honey. All fragrances that are hard to find in bottled perfumes.
A gyöngyvirág mérgező ezért nem teszik parfümbe.
Did you do it? I've been wanting to do honeysuckle and ginger, I used a spray in high school but it isn't made anymore
i don't seem to be able to find a part II anywhere...??
Neither can I 😢
Same here
She explained that she made a mistake by using a jar that previously contained cumin, it mess the whole scent and she couldn’t redo it because there were no more violets left so she had to wait for the next spring and she said she would do it if she was at home but it looks like she wasn’t or she forgot
She seems to have disappeared off of UA-cam several years ago. I doubt if there will be ver be a part two.
@@losiento2 I found her on fb. Posted June 2nd we should all remind her about part 2😄
Violets are my very very favorite in the world too so I've got my fingers crossed that your experiment works! I had to resist the temptation to skip ahead to see if it worked but I'm enjoying the video as it is so I won't know until you reveal the final product!
This is why there is no part 2: 'I made a terrible mistake in using a jar that had previously contained cumin. it scented the entire batch and by then violet season was over. If I am home this spring, when the violets are out, I'll recreate the scented oil and film part 2. i'm very sorry that I couldn't redo it last spring. '
Oh that's gutting...
She should write this right in the description box. Many comments asking where is part 2... not cool! but thank you for the update.
No biggie. Continue being awesome
No Worries, was with the best intention and this count, the video was awesome and your kids participation worth it. I hope 2nd. part is out soon. Thnks.
Alice Tabolinsky who are you? You're not the person who uploaded the video.
your kids are so so so adorable!!! 🥰🥰 such a beautiful family oh my goodness
Every year i go out to collect violets for syrup, tea, skincareproducts and salads... now there is one more thing on my list for next year😮 thank you!
The kids are so beautiful and thanks for teaching us about flower perfume.
Do not forget to candy some violets for on top of cake/cupcake frosting, or homemade vanilla bean ice cream.
Aww see, now why did you have to mention home made ice cream? Now it's going to be on my mind until I go ahead and make some. Nothing quite like vanilla bean ice cream! :)
Oh and I have a really, REALLY good vanilla ice cream recipe.
Ok, well that doesn't help my new craving at all LOL. I would love to see a video on your recipe.
I made a cinnamon ice cream with vanilla bean about a year and a half ago that I loved. Knowing how you like your cinnamon, I'm betting you would enjoy it too. I ate it all before I got a chance to try it on apple pie, but I bet it would have been an amazing addition to it.
C Keevil (big smile) is someones 30 day cleanse a no go now?
Beth DeRoos No no, but Ice cream keeps for a while.....big treat for the end of the cleanse would be a nice reward though :)
WOW! Thank you for sharing this! And the children are learning too! What a GREAT Mom !!!😇😇😇 I will try this with the Cosmos that I grow.
Wouldn't it be just easier to fill a glass jar with as much violets as possible, pour in a fragrance free or low fragrance oil like grapseed oil. Allow this to steep for a week or two, then strain through a cheese cloth into another bowl the oil, making sure to squeeze as much oil out of the violets as possible. Then fill another jar with fresh violets again and pour the first batch of violet infused oil into this. Repeat until you get desired frangrance.
If you want a thicker application, melt some beeswax and add to the infused oil blend whilst whisking to create a cream or balm. I would also add in some 100 proof vodka to preserve and prolong the violet smell.
+AussieWitchCerberus Bindweed bruising the Violets changes the fragrance, but allowing them to drain without bruising might work.
@@Thefreshp could you freeze first to prevent bruising reaction? Then oil extract and heavy squeeze?
Hi i just wanted to tell you that you look like a really kind person and i support you
It’s 3 am and UA-cam recommended this to me. I should be sleeping lol
I first learned about this process after having read (and many years later, watching the film) "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer." I have decided that my first enfleurage experiment is going to be the fantastic LINDEN TREE. I have several fragrances I want to try and capture, but if you have never smelled a linden tree, you are truly missing olfactory heaven!
BelfastBailey Ooh maybe I should plant one?
BelfastBailey You are a wonderful soul. I just looked them up. Bees love them, they grow in my zone, they have tannins so I can use the leaves to brew kombuch and the flowers make a delicious tea. Thank you. I'm going to the nursery to see if I can get one.
I bet it will.
Unfortunately, the darned linden tree that I know about in my immediately vicinity has not bloomed for the last 2 years (or I have missed it). It is aggravating, but thankfully it bloomed 3 years ago and I was able to follow my nose LITERALLY! I was walking up and down the street and walking through yards inhaling deeply, turning and backtracking when the aroma dissipated and finally a guy says, "Can I help you?" I said I was trying to locate a smell in the air. He said, "I think it's my tree." I said, "Oh, I doubt it." He laughed and said, "Come stand under it." I was about knocked out with the scent of heaven! He laughed and then realized who I was and I recognized him. We were friends from childhood...hadn't seen him in years. Sorry...long-winded, but that is my linden story. A smell from my grade school days that I could never put a name to...and at the age of 43, I found it through reconnecting with a long lost friend. It was a very good day that summer! :-)
THAT is beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
Your Voice is soooo Chill, it's very relaxing to watch this video. I will try this!!! Thanks!
alma eufracio Thank you.
Loved the first part, but I can't find the second one even after clicking on the video above as instructed. Can you please post a link?
Also, I was wondering if one might warm the oil just a bit to be thinner, add the flowers, and mix them in a blender then letting it sit for 48 hrs. The blended flower then has more surface area with which to transfer the scent into the oil. Then strain out the flower bits in slightly warmed oil. Would this work? Thanks for letting me know!
Those kids around the flowers make my stomach churn! They are crushing the scent from the new flowers. can say that because I have heathens that ruin projects.
I feel empathy for the children in your life. The kids are much more important than the flowers. It's not even a question. The flowers are for the children's learning, it's not nor ever was about the project.
There's a very peaceful quality to where u are i feel very relaxed watching your video!
Thank you Love 💕

I cant wait to see how this works out. I love the smell of violets. I wonder if this would work for roses?
Yes, rose is an easy scent to extract.
This was 2014 .....sure took along time to do part 2. Now 2019. If you distill would that be better..no solvent I.e. alcohol.
She explained that she made a mistake by using a jar that previously contained cumin, it mess the whole scent and she couldn’t redo it because there were no more violets left so she had to wait for the next spring and she said she would do it if she was at home but it looks like she wasn’t or she forgot

It's so nice to have the little help, makes everything all cozy...
What a lovely video and a lovely family too.
Looking forward to seeing your experiment again
when the flowers are ready. x
Thank you love for your kindness. I bungled the experiment AGAIN this year. Ugh. I sat the flowers on a table and forgot them and they molded. That was at the end of violet season. Bummer. Maybe I'll try and recreate it with lindon flowers this coming month.
linden would be awesome. where do you find linden blossoms?
That sounds great. Looking forward to that. xx
At the Fragonard perfume factory in Grasse, France the flowers were placed one by one opened and face down on the oil. Much less flowers were used and they were changed everyday for many days. I think a lot of waste occurred by harvesting all at once and smashing them all in the pan without direct contact with the oil. Hope you do try again. Your Violet patch is lovely.
Yes, lots of wastage and too many flowers picked at once. Flowers are placed individually face down I believe. And can't the leaves also be used? Llovely to see so many violets thanks
Thank you for that important info I was just about to harvest my entire patch!
I love the way uh made it....wid children nd all
I love it that you got the kids involved. With the lock down, this would be a great family project.
what a nice family with lovely kids and great teamwork’s May God bless them all
Kudos to you for handling very well the small species of human kind.
Were is Part 2??
Healing with Reiki Sorry. I made a grave mistake and put the violet oil into a jar that had previously held cumin. We left town for a month and when I went to process the oil, the cumin had overpowered the violet. Violets are seasonal and only out for a couple weeks, at most, so I've been waiting all year to shoot part two and now we're in Mexico and I've missed violet season again. Ugh. That will teach me a lesson on shooting a video in parts.

There doesn't seem to be a link to the second half of this. Help!! How do I finish making the violet enfleurage?
I rarely watch videos to the end, but with this video, I just leaned back and watched and was totally relaxed and felt good, I wear my Violet Absolute oil on my skin and it feels amazing. I am a fan of Rudolf Steiner, too. I went to the Waldorf School in Germany.
You were a lucky student. Thank you for the beautiful comment. Welcome.
Haha, unfortunately I was not such a lucky student though. I had very bad teachers overall in the Waldorf school that's why I ended up leaving on my own accord at 16 and went to an all girls public school instead. I was treated better there. But Rudolf Steiner is my teacher. Not the Anthroposophists. Ha. I have many of them in my family. One is a very good friend. But in general I stay away from any type of sectarianism. Even Rudolf Steiner disliked it when people were mesmerized by him, he wanted to be understood.
Oh, I love you even more. Somewhere along the way, bad teachers or not, you learned to think for yourself. Bravo. I'm more than a little leery of group think myself. People are always mesmerized by passion, they want it, they want to hold it, be it, but it never works out when you follow someone else's dream.
FRESH PRINCESS Thank you so much. :0) Yes, my life has been quite a rough journey, but indeed, I learned. I guess learning the hard way is more efficient. That is very true what you said, people are easily mesmerized. My husband always says they go for the "strong horse", whoever that may be even if its Ronald Reagan who removed the solar panels from the White House. That's why some people are devil worshipers, they think it makes them somehow empowered. This is very sad. I have been trying to get people interested in true empowerment, to love themselves the way they are, but my UA-cam vids are not very popular. Haha. I am trying a new technique now with the Cabbage Patch Doll but its still not popular. What is your name? My name is Nicki.
Hi Nicki. I'm Corrin. I'm glad you found me.

Hi where's the follow up video? Can't find it. Thank you!
There is a company that makes it here in America, it's called Biofinest. It's an awsome product and super natural.
You are living my childhood dream
OMG I love the scent of violets!
Hey, where’s the second part? :( I’m following your steps 🥰
Sorry if this has been asked a million times, but doesn't seem to be, did part two ever get made? I've looked through the whole list, and can't find it, if it was never made - could you share what should have happened next please?
I have, however, found lots of other videos I will be watching - you have a lovely style on camera!
If there's anyway you could edit the description to include the mishap and why part 2 didn't happen, it would be greatly appreciated. Its a pain to try and find the answer in the comments and I'm sure you've typed "check below" enough to feel mildly annoyed 8)
I did enjoy the first part but do have a few bits to add. The flowers shouldn't have dew on them when picked, they should be picked just after the dew has dried naturally from the sun. Water brings bad things to an enfleurage as it's where bacteria grows, so no water should ever be present. Too many flowers for the first run. Lay them on individually, pressing each one into the oil/fat so they form a single layer, process them for the appropriate time, then take the old ones off and add the new layer in the same fashion, repeating til all the flowers are done. You've already learned this one the hard way, never use a container that's had strongly scented herbs in it prior. It will most assuredly permeate the new herbs odor. Alcohol may be able to rid the jar of the scent, it's worked a few times for me, depending on the herb.
Sad to hear the cause for no part 2. Good luck on getting the next batch to the finish line! Cheers 8)
+Hempirical Herbs Sadly no. UA-cam takes no prisoners when you post something that needs edited. I hope to be home this spring and try again. Thank you for your very thoughtful response.
+FRESH PRINCESS
Youre very welcome. Hope some of its helpful. Happy herbing 8)

Where the next video please? Can you post the link here?
I want to see the next part of this
Many hands make light work, I think.. I bet it smells good. Oh and could you have used a rolling pin to force them into the oil.. or maybe ferment some..
Great suggestion.
Yea where's Mo and the fermentation.
These aren't Mo's kids, these are my friend's kids visiting from California.
I don't know if you have tried this since, but I think probably what went wrong is that the layer of flowers is too thick. You really just want the opening of the flower down on the coconut oil in a single layer and change every 24 hours instead of 48
Where is the final distillation video? I tried clicking on the video above but it wouldn’t send me to the 2nd video!! :(
This reminds me of making things with my mother. Nothing like quality time with loved ones, by the way I'm gonna be trying this

We had an off camera discussion about how tasty coconut oil is. It wasn't until the editing that I noticed her eating it. I love these kids (and their parents). They're such wonderful people.
Aww you are so nice and have such a lovely, calm temperament. Can you adopt me me please? :D

Please come in Bangladesh! You will find lot of child like this!
I think my inclination would have been to stir them into the oil. then warm it gently to strain the petals out. but i guess the heat could damage the aroma.
Heat is death to violets. But something heartier like roses might benefit.
I can’t find the second video 🙁
I love the mood of this video!
I hate I'm just seeing this video because my question is how long does the fragrance last on your skin? My favorite scent for years was rose but I just ordered essential violet oil for a natural fragrant oil, and OOMMGG it smells like Angels I love love love the scent.
