@@call-me-special My interpretation is that considering the love/hate relationship that Marla has with Tyler/Narrator that she wants him to breed her to completion so that she can destroy a symbolic representation of their self loathiing passion.
@@jule8280 it's equally horrible to say, not worse. But the studio back pedalled after Fincher changed the line to this, but they stuck to the new line.
I live in the UK but as french guy the first time I've seen this movie was properly translated in french "nobody fucked me like that since primary school" nothing choking since. But that's fun tho
That’s not true. They originally used the line from the book and the studio said they had to come up with a different line. That’s when the writers changed it to the line that’s in the movie.
Helena Bonham Carter and Minnie Driver are two of the most brilliant when they put on the American Standard accent. I thought Minnie was from Michigan when I saw Grosse Pointe Blank. Props to Helena and all the Brits that can Gary Oldman their way through American cinema! Good on ya!
If not high school, to be clear, that means 14 years old or younger (but over 6) (you can be a 15 year old freshman in high school). That's REALLY dark.
In the Russian dub Marla directly says: «No one has ever stared at me like that since elementary school». The staring part is wrong, but when I heard the words: «since elementary school» I was shocked immediately. My mouth was open for a good couple of minutes...
Did you know... That the line was originally "I want to have your abortion" but a producer thought that was too bad to say on film so Fincher demanded that if he changed it to something then the producer can't ask for another change. The new line "I haven't been fucked like that since grade school" was instantly pushed back from the producer and she demanded it be changed back to the original line, but Fincher refused to change it.
The original line was “I wanna have your abortion”. Production kicked back on that so Fincher said he’d change it under the proviso that what he changed it to stayed. This is how we got the grade school quote
Another interest fact...due to Tyler's mental illness, he and his alternate ego are never in the same room with her. She is unaware he's crazy until later on the film and she would have caught on sooner if they had been.
I'm pretty sure that where she's from that the term grade school isn't used. so what did the 'old enough to know' actress think it meant? of course, it's real easy to change your answer once somebody is offended. these days that means trying to cancel actors and directors over one line/scene from a 20yo movie they never saw to begin with.
In the book, the line is actually, "I want to have your abortion" You're welcome.
Correct, although I think the grade school line lands harder

Crazy how things have different meanings like the word fag: it's gay here in the u.s. and in the u.k it means a cigarette.
Tho now nobody call cigarettes fags because of the fact many just assume it means different
My personal favourite is the question
Can I bum a fag
USA and England have to very different meanings
Every slur for a homosexual has meant something else in the past
people in the uk use fag as an insult for gay people too
Gay didn't even always mean homosexual
even I didn't realise it means elementary school and it totally changed my view for the bedroom scene in the movie.
Makes it real dark huh
But from grade school she meant college?
Primary school means till 6th grade right?

For those who don’t know primary school is basically elementary school
The first rule about fight club is you don't talk about fight club. The second rule about fight club is you don't talk about fight club.
Primary is elementary school for the US people
One of the greatest lines in cinematic history
I've never interpreted that elementary school because grade school goes through high school.

That part always seemed dark, even for the movie.

a dark line, yes. but the interesting thing with Marla's character is that she talks shit, and you don't know whether she's serious here, or trolling
