    The last race on the old Atlanta Motor Speedway configuration. A lot of hard hits in this one by Craven, Musgrave, Nemechek, Bradberry, and Grissom. This was also the last Winston Cup race with roof cams until the 1998 Daytona 500 due to wind tunnel test results after the race. See the feature mentioned in the 1997 Las Vegas 300 for more.
    This was complied from the original ABC version, the ESPN version, and the ESPN2 version but it is missing the red flag coverage after Grissom's wreck.

    The old Atlanta Motor Speedway layout was much better than the current one

    Guys, Homestead is close to Atlanta's old configuration

    I would say that both configurations are unique. The current Atlanta Motor Speedway is anything but a cookie-cutter, plus it doesn't matter what shape as long as we have racing grooves all the way up to the wall. I know that after March's race, the track will be repaved for the first time since it was reconfigured, but don't worry because it only took 2-3 years of wearing to get 3-wide racing.

    The new configuration has had some great finishes no doubt. But the old track had better overall racing and more lead changes in my opinion. Since the surface has become so worn AMS seems to drive more like its old self again. I liked the tighter groove of the old configuration more, but that's just my opinion. There was just no reason to change such a great track in the first place. I still don't know why Bruton didn't just put the new stands where Weaver used to be.

    Man, these were the days. So many great HOF drivers in the field. I miss the days when teams weren't changing drivers and paint schemes seemingly every other year. Big fan of that Quality Care Ford Credit #88. Very nearly was his year for the Cup.

      >I miss the days when teams weren't changing drivers
      Drivers were always switching teams in the summer. It was dubbed "silly season" and it sometimes still called that. Granted, the drivers switching hands were usually on mid or lower tier teams though.

    Interestingly enough, the spot where we see the start finish line is the backstretch on the new configuration. If you look in the background on the old backstretch you can see the construction for the new quad oaval shaped stands

    I have an idea: How about if we revert to this & move the Start/Finish Line back to the new backstretch. & how about we go half-this & half quad-oval dog-leg; & give Atlanta's 2 races back to someone else but keep Kentucky; & also move it back into the Chase & become it the 8th race of the Chase in-between Texas & Phoenix.

    damn atlanta looked awesome before it was turned into Texas

  • @mattkowal90
    @mattkowal90 6 років тому +1

    Charlotte Motor Speedway was ruined when they decided to grind the whole track in 2005, which resulted in a repave. Texas Motor Speedway had its issues, they were fixed, then it started to leak rainwater in 2016, so they repave it, but ruin the track by flattening Turns 1 and 2 from 24 to 20 degrees and widening it from 60 to 80 feet. Now the biggest mistake that Atlanta is making is not repaving it, because they said they were going to repave after last year's race, then changed their minds. The surface is getting worse, and they say they will only repave after this year's race if the track winds up in a condition in which sealing and patching it will not be an option. Just repave the track, but don't change any aspect of the track except the pavement.
