I've been saying this for years. MTB flat pedal shoes are too rigid, and you have zero pedal feel through them. Vulcanized skate shoes give perfect pedal feel, and just enough protection. Pedal grip patterns vary between brands, DC has been my favorite, but I'm currently riding Lakai's. If Five Ten made a vulcanized flexible shoe, but used their ultra-grip rubber, I think that would be perfect.

How is the toe box on the Chrome’s and how is the arch support? I have tried on a couple of pairs of 5/10’s (freerider pro mountain’s) and the toe box was great. However, the arch support was way too far back and was causing harsh discomfort. Have since stuck with Vans.

Fit is a bit narrow. You want to follow the directions on their website for measuring your foot. I was skeptical as it had me size down significantly compared to other shoes, but measured nearly exact to length when I compared them after arrival. I think its due to the reduced thickness of the material compared to more padded sneakers. But on width, they are narrow. And what he says about blisters is correct. Don't let that scare you from them, but be aware that they do need a break-in. What I have done is loosened the laces and re-laced the top to a heel lock (if you hike a lot, you'll know this, if not there's lots of videos and its easy). That has helped with both toe box comfort and heel rub. Also wear good socks until they're broke in.

As an adjunct to this review, I 'm 'Old School'...I ride with clips and straps. I tried clipless, but found it too unsettling if not dangerous for my 'all-road/track' cycling. So for years, I've bought Pearl Izumi X-Alp Canyon Cycling Shoes...I've just noticed on the latest website that they no-longer term them "mountain bike shoes. I also see more now listed at my local shop as 'commuting' shoes. The quality of the sole, while getting wider, ostensibly for 'off-road' type pedals, deteriorated markedly over the past few years, mostly in terms of longevity of sole material used. So I tried 'renovating' some of my models from past years. I've always filled the cleat recess in the bottom with polyurethane construction adhesive, it works incredibly well for the task, where no other glue does, to stop water coming up inside the shoes. I'm a cross-country distance cyclists (I precede the pretentious "gravel bike" nomenclature) and do many limestone and gravel trails, so one often finds themselves on damp ground. So here's the essential point, besides how shoes for my type of rider have gotten wider and ruined the fit for my class of cyclist: *Polyurethane Adhesive* for any mods on your soles. It adheres, and dries flexible, about the same as sole material. My older shoes I renovated? I did surgery on them, cut through the fixed insole under the removable one, with a slit large enough to remove the threaded plate that the cleats screw to, and filled all gaps with the PL adhesive. After thoroughly cleaning, and roughing up the smooth nylon inner-sole area affected with wire brushing and emory paper, spray the area lightly with water mist first, as it improves the bond, and then apply the adhesive and use the supplied (if one is included, they're getting rare now) cavity plug over where the cleats mounted. I'd forgotten how incredibly well the earlier models had fit both my feet and the toe clips. PL adhesive really takes a day to fully cure. Have patience.

So I picked up a pair of these since they had my size and the olive color were marked half off. The sole is comparable in stiffness to my Giro Rumbles, which is good. A couple things to suggest to anyone that buys these. 1) Follow the sizing instructions on the website. I was skeptical, but it got me the exact length as my other shoes. 2) Immediately re-lace them with a heel lock. That will let you both loosen the toes (they are pretty tight) and minimize heel rub. Heel lock is a common lacing in hiking. If you don't know how, its easy and there's lots of videos on how to do it. It will take you like 10 seconds to learn.
Im the same as you , years of bike riding in vans , I have to admit the cush sole vans are alot better than normal vans , but got talked into some 5tens and the grip on the pedal almost felt like i was clipped in , took a while to get use to the fact my foot wasn't wrapping around the pedal, but definitely a good investment 👌
I just wish more mtn bike shoes had a neoprene cuff around the ankle to help keep debris out. I had a pair ages ago, but nowadays there's few that do. Because no matter how comfy a shoe is, rock under your heel during the ride turns a comfy shoe to uncomfy
5Ten makes their mid pro boots with a neoprene cuff and it also has ankle protectors iirc? Idk if it's still manufactured but adidas had them in stock last time I looked at their website.

To stay warm this winter, I am using metal flat pedals on my fixed commuter. Always use spd pedals on the bike before. The boots I use have a stiff sole and seem to work OK. I have some hiking shoes that don't feel as secure. I get different feedback from legs muscles. Tightness in calves less now I am a bit more relaxed without being clipped in. I might consider a pair of similar shoes in the spring. Happy new year from SW Ontario! What happened to the witty postscript? I rode to work on Fri before Christmas in the snow. Arrived a bit early, the lady at the front desk told me my supervisor sent me a message to stay home. Worked for a couple of hours then went home. The gravel tires did not work so well in the loose snow. So I put some used winter Contis on and all is well. Why do some people think it is useful to honk their horn when approaching you? I am completely focused on moving forward and staying upright. Just use the other lane and go around me. So I turn to look and fall in the middle of the lane. And he now has to wait for me to pick the bike up and get moving again! Are you in a rush now? Sorry, had to get that out of my head. I am sure people in NS are much nicer than uptight suburbanites from here.

I finally sprung for a pair of Ride Concepts flat pedal shoes last year and they're amazing, I find they really do help to keep your whole leg more stabilized in your pedal stroke just like SPD shoes do, since it prevents your foot and ankles from distorting when the shoe collapses like skate shoes do. They also have a tread pattern similar to vans which is another plus
There definitely is a difference in shoes. I like my 510 freeriders. I like the firm sole but that isn’t for everyone. If I want pedal feel I use my shimano gr 500s. For replacing my dcs for daily drivers I’ve gone with sleuths. I should add that I use all metal pin based pedals. I can’t stand plastic anymore.

I like how stiff my 510 freeride pros are. I come from a skate background and def rode all kinds of my skate shoes on the trails when I first started out. To be honest the stiff sidewalls of the shoe really help on drops and big hits. I've smashed my feet into rocks, roots, walls, trees. I believe if the shoes weren't as stiff as they were I would have either gotten my foot injured or not stayed on the bike. It's all personal preference. My friends are loving their Etnies MTB shoes.

Have you tried the 510 free riders? The rubber compound is sticky, and the soles are thick. They're a MTBing shoe that are like the industry standard. The soles are stiff but they do get softer after like a year or so. They're great and durable. I've had mine for almost 2 years and still going strong.
I've considered a pair as my next shoe instead of Vans for all these reasons, especially when it comes to wear. I've destroyed so many pairs of Vans. Also, what's up with that Cannondale seen in the intro? There is a lot going on with it. I also see that new Norton frame!

Vans makes bmx shoes. Theyre 110 bucks and have a special cupped tread to engage with pedal studs. No one seems to mention them but they're pliable and they're what I prefer over the last few years.
I think it also depends on the flat pedals you are using. I was a 5/10 wearer but then I got some Pedalling Innovations catalysts pedals. They are big stable pedals and one day I rode in my cheap Vans. Perfect combo for me, I’ve tried various MTB shoes but find them too stiff and uncomfortable. The Vans and Catalyst pedals just work perfect for me, and the Vans are way cheaper than MTB shoes. I kinda wish the Vans had a wee bit of toe protection but so far so good. And I’m always wearing them so no need to change shoes just to ride.
Good cycling flats are hard to find I said good ones I got a pair of near new fivetens that I am obsessed with their are fantastic I never thought flats could be that good . Now I am on the hunt for clipless version and don’t worry I am a size 11 your baby 9 1/2 size shoes are safe lol

I’ve used. Enties to dc. To vans. And 5/10. And I really found out being comfortable or to feel the pedal to say. Vans took it. Since it was skateboard shoes I’ve used them the most. Now on support and protection 5/10 pro we’re good. Hi tops vans not so great however they are all slippy AF in dirt. Vans are horrible in trail walks. Some maybe. To me you can ride with Nike and get a ride it and yes whatever makes your foot comfy and you ride in every case your get opinions vans to 5/10. I’m gonna get me the ride concepts and see but all shoes have the issues. And yes today I still will grab my old shell toes and ride. This way I walk ok and ride ok.

I was thinking about todays fashions and what mark it will leave on pop culture history as we sort of don't have one. If you think about the 80's and how absurd the styles and fashions were and how they were looked upon only a decade later into the 90's then subsequently 00's. People gave it a real hard time. You had Bright colours, denim, accessories that were over the top and mostly pointless. Then I realise how you've managed to combine most of these absurd styles into one outfit. You're rocking a neon bright dyed hoodie and to top it off you've got denim over it. Not throwing shade. Just thinking out loud and I think 2010-20's will be remembered like the 80's. Ie- I can't believe we wore that stuff and thought it was cool.
Depends, cycling shoes have to have a rigid sole, not slightly flexible, not any way malleable, completely rigid. Otherwise you'd just be riding slow for an unreasonable amount of effort and a lot of discomfort. I mean, I use flat pedals on a Giant TCR to school and I ride mostly zone 2 and running shoes/black shoes are mostly adequate(surprisingly I like the feel of formal shoes on flat pedals better than running shoes). But for any hard riding, I already suffer enough so I'll use a carbon soled shoe. How this applies to the topic? I'm pretty sure I've seen plastic/nylon or whatever it's called soles on the flat pedal shoes, which is a lot better than normal shoes for when riding.
If you think the only thing in cycling is lycro bros chasing "tHe waTTs", you might be in the wrong place. There's a whole world of usage of a bike in which speed is the last priority. And purpose built shoes that stand up to pedals but allow you to walk without looking like you have a broomstick 1.5m up your ass are a premium.
@@cjohnson3836 i have done the walk of shame on trails that are just too advanced for me, and I've also walked while pushing my bike with friends on the way home from school 4 years ago when I had school. Walking on carbon soled shoes is fine and I've no idea why you think you look weird walking in road shoes but I did say I use normal loafers and running shoes when school bound. Point is if you're doing any kind of extended effort or long distance riding, you're better off with a stiff soled shoe.

These shoes work with the Peloton bike+ (April 2022), ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxGPkov2mNjgZfG33r6Bwvies8jKE4AKZB and are of good enough quality. I have completed 10 rides so far and there are no issues. The first time trying to fit them on the Peloton bike took 10 minutes (even with the help of an experienced cyclist friend who wears the same type of cleats). It took a couple of rides to break in. After the first two rides there were no issues at all.
softer sole and you can grip you pedal better stiff flat pedal shoes are a scam based on clipless pedal mentality of the need to push your foot into the shoe bc clipless pedals are tiny. so when you have a normal pedal you don't need that platform inside your shoe.

Did you try to skate them?

Is the white posidion the new Norton?

Your reviews are perfect.... keep it up brother

Five10 when I ride mnt biking. The pedal spikes rip my vans, Nike, ect.. up. But I wear them everywhere.

So the shoes are dope, what pedal is your pick when riding dirt jumper in town. Just wondering here
I like how stiff my 510 freeride pros are.
So I’ve worn Adidas sambas to do a similar thing to these shoes. However I like how those Panaracers look.

Foxing on a vulc shoe is the stripe of rubber on the side of the sole. It holds the flat sole to the upper and is fused to it (vulcanization).

Have you tried the 510 free riders? The rubber compound is sticky, and the soles are thick. They're a MTBing shoe that are like the industry standard. The soles are stiff but they do get softer after like a year or so. They're great and durable. I've had mine for almost 2 years and still going strong.
510 has gone down a bit since being bought out.
I've considered a pair as my next shoe instead of Vans for all these reasons, especially when it comes to wear. I've destroyed so many pairs of Vans.
Also, what's up with that Cannondale seen in the intro? There is a lot going on with it. I also see that new Norton frame!

It was cheaper to buy Decathlon SPD shoes and CrankBrother pedals so no idea. I probably have many clip -on bad habbits but heh, me feet stay on the pedals 😀
I’m using dc skate shoes been happy with them . Leatt has some good looking shoes I want to give a try.

Globe skate shoes work for me. Good pedals with decent pins matter as much as the footwear tbh.
Yes
@@cjohnson3836 which is why I mentioned comfort as the more important factor. Speed is a bonus.
@@dan_lazaro You seem to like ignoring the part about walking. You speak like a roadie. You've clearly never had to hike-a-bike through a trail.

Best shoe review ever
These shoes work with the Peloton bike+ (April 2022), ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxGPkov2mNjgZfG33r6Bwvies8jKE4AKZB and are of good enough quality. I have completed 10 rides so far and there are no issues. The first time trying to fit them on the Peloton bike took 10 minutes (even with the help of an experienced cyclist friend who wears the same type of cleats). It took a couple of rides to break in. After the first two rides there were no issues at all.
softer sole and you can grip you pedal better stiff flat pedal shoes are a scam based on clipless pedal mentality of the need to push your foot into the shoe bc clipless pedals are tiny. so when you have a normal pedal you don't need that platform inside your shoe.
vans are not good for anything just get a normal hiking type shoe that has a stiff sole. don't over spend just for them type shoes
I see subliminal images of a Poseidon Norton production model
freerider pros are so good. i had some brittish nuts too(semen uk)
for me, yes. I wear my old skate shoes.
Damn. I’m size 9.5
