I fell in love with the choral arrangement of this piece when I was in High School. It was one of those pieces that pushed me to pursue music in college. Now, preparing for my senior voice recital, I stumbled upon the music for the soprano solo version of the piece. I can't think of a better way to end my senior recital. Beautiful video.
I love the full choir version but idk, nothing beats this version. It feels so intimate and sweet between the three. I always get more chills 6:20-7:10 than I do with full choirs.
What joy! Hila's beauty in voice and smile, and Five Hebrew Love Songs have healing powers that penetrate even a sad heart. Thank you from Rachel in Sydney
Larov: “Mostly,” said the roof to the sky, “the distance between you and I is endlessness; But a while ago two came up here, And only one centimeter was left between us.” Beautiful. Just simply beautiful.
To those who are citing "tradition," I say this: This event appears to be an instance of hybridism, rather than an instance of tradition. Please accept that--or accept allegations of bigotry and anti-hybridism. Great work, Guys. I commend thee and thee.
@modern4bebo hi bebo, the comment based on my impression in the first few seconds of seeing her. my first impressions are often wrong but in her case i was so happy to be proven wrong that i couldn't help writing about it in a comment! =) i'm sorry if i offended you but i very much admire hila plitmann and meant my comment as a compliment. did you know that she wrote all the lyrics for these 'five hebrew love songs'? she's a truly admirable woman with very well-rounded talents.
hmm actually I believe she hits the C (and B) above that in the third and fourth movements which isn't super high - but pretty high. She has a ridiculous voice though - I had the pleasure of hearing her live a few years ago (with Del Tredici) when I was at Pitt and she's one of the most impressive sopranos I've /ever/ heard live.
she sounds very childish, and the song is faster than i like to hear it. but it sounds very beautiful and im in love with this song. you know she actually wrote the words and Eric put them to music. 3:20 and on is one of my favorite parts. i love her expressions!! and her energy!! my absolute favorite part is about 7:30 on. they are both very musically inclined. we are doing this in my choir class, and i have o say it is definitely the most fun i have in the choir. this song is very moving. :)
when i first saw her, i didn't think she was attractive, but i'm liking her face more and more now =) she's one of those rare women who become more attractive as time passes... reverse usually happens for women xD
It's religion, not tradition and it's bullshit. There are thousands of female singers in Israel and none of them cover their arms. In religious circles women aren't actually allowed to sing. That's how great religion is.
Yes. Many of us have done this piece (hence why so many of us are here). Yes, Hila is a goddess among us, and her husband a god, etc. But can I just say that the tambourine at 3:41 is just TOO much? It's drowning her out. >.>
Both Eric and Hila reached down into the essence of what we are (our soul) to produce something like this.
Agreed! They are so talented. Nice folks as well! Well, I haven't met Hila in person, but I have met Eric.

I have probably listened to 6:20-7:10 at least 100 times. Whitacre was definitely commissioned by the heavens to write this piece.
The fourth is definitely my favourite. Her voice is so pure and beautiful; I could listen to it for hours on end (and I think I have already)!
I'm thoroughly convinced over and over that "Éyze shéleg" is not from this world. It was composed in the heavens. Too much beauty for human ears 😭

We are singing these now in our chorale--and I can't stop listening to this--how beautiful! How beautiful!--the music and your voice!!!
Beautiful! I love her energy and presence.Beautiful voices. Love the accompaniment too! Awesome stuff. Bravi!

My women's chorus is doing this virtually for Valentine Day. This is really helpful, considering the poet is singing. xxoo
Beautiful
Love these songs done by Hila, she and Eric have the talent and they share it.....how beautiful
SO much sound at 3:47! breathtaking!
Larov:
“Mostly,” said the roof to the sky,
“the distance between you and I is endlessness;
But a while ago two came up here,

Beautiful. Just simply beautiful.
aweee i love five hebrew love songs.
i was with the womens chorale my freshman year at clu.. we did this..
:)
wow. her voice is hauntingly beautiful.
She is Bad A! Singing with such placement and such a clean tone and playing that tambourine without missing a beat! She's my hero!
6:43 CHILLS!!!!!!! her voice SHAMES that violin!
Total refutation of all "dumb blond" jokes by two blond super-geniuses Eric & Hila.
linuxlover55 I hope you're kidding lol. There is no such thing as "blonde," being a state of mind. Both refer to the hair color/a fair-skinned person.
Should be a love button. Sigh. What a magical couple. Sigh. So much talent. What a gift. Thanks for the great posting. Sigh.
She's so beautiful! I think she's one of the most beautiful women in the world...
Beautiful!!!! inspirational, sweet and great work!!! Bravo Whitacre!!!!
Her singing Eyze Shelleg... most gorgeous thing ever.
gorgeous on all counts...a marriage of music, beauty, love, history...congratulations! xo heidi
so beautiful

Great work, Guys. I commend thee and thee.
I love listening to this. I sure wish the video were better quality.
your amazing this was a great song choice also
ugh the fourth movement is just so beautiful i cant even stand it!
Hila is exquisite.
Beautiful, Awesome, nice, refresh
Beautiful!!!!!
magnifique , superbe musique !!!! merci !
This is incredible! I'm so inspired.
BEAUTIFUL
How lovely! Thank you ;)
@cutefidgety I think the sincerity and purity in her voice is what makes her attractive.
She's really good.
but I honestly like the full SATB arrengement for this song.
Great performance though.
she is!!

Could someone provide the Hebrew transcript for this? Not the transliteration but the original translation - if possible! :)
Stephanie Forlong i believe there’s a video on here with Hila and Eric where they discuss the original translation!
kalla kulla is my favorite
@slmacd1 It's in the score :)
It's too bad no one thought to credit either the pianist or the violinist both of whom are excellent. Not cool.
Their names are embedded in the video, they flash on the screen at the beginning
If I'm not mistaken, she is from Israel. Or at least near there. :) how cool!
She was born in Jerusalem in 1973, so yes. :)
gosh she makes it look so effortless...as if the notes she sings are as simple as talking, or even breathing. =]
now thats love for whay she does
Can you say "most talented couple ever"?
What's with the yellow hair? I bet her real hair is lovely!
I love 3:50 its so cheery
יפהפה... de la veritable dentelle

Great music but tambourine annoyingly loud.
1:27, 4:35
7:30

I can’t do that
That why men cover the head with a with a Kipa when reading from the Torah !!!!!

Damn, that's a pretty harsh thing to say about the composer's wife.
Modesty is the point in Jewish Tradition
hila is beautiful.
when i first saw her, i didn't think she was attractive, but i'm liking her face more and more now =) she's one of those rare women who become more attractive as time passes... reverse usually happens for women xD
It's written in the Torah !! Modesty and respect towards G-d.
Richard B. Davis not from the Torah. She actually wrote the lyrics herself.
It's a Jewish tradition for a woman to not show here bare arms whilst singing " holy " songs .
These aren't holy songs though, they're love songs, hence the name.
It's religion, not tradition and it's bullshit. There are thousands of female singers in Israel and none of them cover their arms. In religious circles women aren't actually allowed to sing. That's how great religion is.

I dunno, I love it---she's like a joyful little girl with that tamourine :)
@cutefidgety
seriously? what is your issue judging people that way? disgusting.
Cover your arms whilst singing Hebrew
none of my concern Mr Davis but why?
Juliet Lavid Because religious idiots.
We should try to respect religious tradition but also celebrate musical diversity.
this is legit
