Good evening! And welcome to this walk around Knaresborough, one of the prettiest towns in Yorkshire, and the home of some of the most spectacular views in the entire country! From its magnificent viaduct to its ruined castle and more, there's so much to see on a tour of this compact clifftop town!
As I hope you'll agree, the history of Knaresborough is a fascinating one filled with action and local legends, but one thing we didn't mention on our walk is the origin of the town's name. The earliest records of the town are in the Domesday Book of 1086, when it was named 'Chenaresburg', meaning the fortress of Cenheard.
As such, it could be suggested that Knaresborough was home to a defensive fortress even before the grand Norman castle was built in the early 12th century, though little, if anything, is known about it.

This is my favourite town in England. I've stayed there twice, once for a week, and again for two weeks. It now feels very much like home to this Canadian.
I was supposed to go back one more time after my 70th birthday, but Covid. That was two years ago, so I'm not sure I'll ever get back now. If you're staying here with no car, the local bus takes you to Harrogate, where the bus depot is right next to the train station. You can get almost anywhere from there. Thank you so much for the memories.

Well done. It brings back wonderful memories. Nice synchronizing of commentary with scenery. The adjective 'delightful' is well deserved both for the town and your desciption.

Very nicely done. Well researched. Thank you. Remarkable that a piece of railway construction should be the centrepiece of the town. Pity we don't build modern infrastructure with similar aesthetics.

Came here when we were staying in Harrogate a few years ago. Wish we could have stayed for longer but it started to snow! Would like to go back sometime though. Thank you once again.

My hometown baby!! Greatest place on earth.
Growing up there i can say this video is wonderful, but there is so mich more too. Unfortunately you'd have to make a 2 hour video to fit it all in!
There used to be an incredible tourist attraction called the house in the rock.

Another great video. And I have a lot of catching up to do. As I've said before not just someone walking about, the narration and the information is beautifully done and researched. Thank you.

Got to agree with you, Knaresborough is a beautiful place. It's well over forty years since I was there but I can clearly remember paddling beneath the viaduct with my Dad, in a two-man canoe. Glad to hear that the station hasn't been spoiled; it was a bit of a time capsule, even back then.😁👍
Anyone who gets the chance, the petrifying well is worth a visit - strange but interesting and very unusual.✔

I went there at 5 years old, so I don't remember too much about it. But I do remember the everyday stuff, like teddy bears , that had turned to stone under a waterfall.
To a 5 year old, that seemed magical 😂
