I just listened to "Isabele: A Report to an Academy" and fuck me this is a direction of prog that I need more of! What´d be a good follow-up as a 1st timer? Cheers, you Legend!
@@Lucca-An-Aspiring-Poet Hey! What a treat to see someone else excited by that band. I would just listen to the Blackbox album from top to bottom, then Twilight Cinema. The first two albums are super weird and have touches of styles that I never in a million years thought that I would enjoy (surfer rock!?). The songs "197", "Bazooka Mirror" and "Death in a Candystore" kept me coming back to the first album. Eventually, the rest grew on me. The second album is excellent as well, but it took a little longer to click with me. "Adville" is brilliant. They've also got a few non-album singles. The only one I'm not onto is "Pretty, Pretty Eyes". The rest are excellent. Enjoy!
I learned about Haken on your channel and it also became a band that I love. The mountain is indeed a very good album. Visions, Virus are excellent too. I can’t remember if you did review the band IQ. I can recommend them. Many excellent albums. Try Dark matter album or the latest, Resistance.
Good seeing you back! Possibly their best song... that riff at 10:12 is absolutely monumental. You should check out Capillarian Crest by Mastodon. It's from their earlier (and heavier) days. Prog metal masterpiece👍
@@JimNewstead Awesome to hear! Leviathan used to be my favorite record by them, but I think Blood Mountain may have surpassed it. One of the most unrelenting albums I've ever heard, glad to hear you like it!
@@ASNnKC913 Hey you fckn legend! I just chimed in on "Capillarian Crest by Mastodon" and absolutely loved it! Care to give some follow-up reccs for me? Cheers from Germany! ^^
@@Lucca-An-Aspiring-Poet Absolutely! The rest of Blood Mountain would be the first place to start, the whole album follows that insane energy that Capillarian Crest has. Sticking with Mastodon, their prior album Leviathan is probably the most similar to Blood Mountain. It's more sludge metal than it is progressive metal, but it does maintain a fast tempo while incorporating elements of prog. Blood Mountain is a difficult one to base recommendations off of because it's one of the strangest and most unique records I've heard. I've looked through my metal playlist and I think the non-Mastodon album that best matches it might be Pelagial by The Ocean.
Hi Jim. We just released a new song called 'Tower'. We're a symphonic/prog metal collective. We're very proud of the new track, and we hope that you will react to the lyric video! Thanks so much!
@@JimNewstead Oh, Enslaved is a must! I´d recommend "Storm Son" for starters. And btw - have you heard of a band called "Thank you scientist"? If not, do yourself a favour and check out "Swarm" - you won´t regret it.
@@HalFischer Just listened to "Swarm" and fuck me once more, this is godly! Thank you lots for the recommendation you Legend! P.S. What would be a good follow-up for me as an absolute 1st timer of the band? Cheers!
@@Lucca-An-Aspiring-Poet hm, to be perfectly honest - thats sort of a hard one. TyS is one of the cases, where I haven't found a single song which I didn't like until now. Stuff's pretty great overall. But the FXMLDR live clip is pretty funny, and live on Audiotree is a quite nice overview on their repertoire, since it's the full session.
Yeah! This is an amazing song off a remarkable album by a really, really great band! Really appreciate your openness to new prog. I'd love for you to get into one of my absolute favourite bands Vulkan who sometimes manages to blend vibes of The Mars Volta and Tool but mostly they're just inventing their own stuff. Try this for a start (on your own or as a reaction if you've got the time and feel) (Off of their debute) ua-cam.com/video/qlqRhL2nh4g/v-deo.html
They're tied with CH for me as my fav too...still can't understand how you can love this album/Haken so much and not really connect with DT...lol Hope all is well Jim! Edit: so much DT influence in this song in particular :)
Hey fella, yup, all is well thanks! I do like a lot of Dream Theater stuff, and I have most of their releases so am slowly picking my way through it. I think the difference is that Dream Theater know they are good, and they have an air of arrogance about them, whereas Haken are passionate about making music together as a band and probably know they are good but don't flaunt it. Dunno, maybe I'm wide of the mark, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of personality to Dream Theater.
@@JimNewstead I think you've put into words the general feeling I've had about dream theater that's kept me from better connecting with some really proficient music. I'm more a fan of the OTHER DT: Dark Tranquillity. It's a really nice & catchy progressive or technical "death" metal (It's just not brutal like dm normally is, thus the quotes). They're one of the original Swedish melodic dm bands, aka the "Gothenburg Sound," along with In Flames & the more aggressive At The Gates. At any rate, this song is most excellent. While I see Dream Theater as POSSIBLY more proficient musicians, I think Haken just writes more interesting & memorable tunes...my OPINION, of course, & those sometimes change, but d. theater has never connected with me in this way.
Visions is THE album, not Mountain, but its still amazing, after that they made Affinity, thats not really that great (still veeeery good) and then all went to poop. In my opinion, their demo album is maybe even the best of their work. Enter the 5th dimension is the name. Aquarius is better than Mountain, no doubts about that and as i said, Visions is a ride. Individual songs from the Visions- meh, its such a shame to listen to them individually, because they are a part of the big puzzle, you have to listen to the whole thing, its just the question if you are that type of listener who likes to spend an hour only listening. Most people cant last more than 5 minutes and even people with passion are not really up to spend an hour in a dark room alone with a single album.
I listen to almost exclusively albums now on the channel….. some people watch one video but don’t have the patience or inclination to watch more. It’s such a shame as the evolution of the listener is a thing to behold! lol…. Seriously, thanks for watching and I agree, albums are absolutely the right way to listen to music, it’s why I now dedicate most of my channel to vinyl album listens.
Virtual re-like again! :)
I'm going to Budapest in February to see Haken live at A38!! :D
So happy!
Glad to have you back Jim.
Haken is the reason why I hunt for prog rock at the record store.
Try Earthside A dream in static.
Will not be disappointed. 🤙
Hey, great to see you again!🎶🖖
Hey, thanks!
Great to have you back Jim, another awesome track from a band I would have never heard about otherwise !

I've seen this cover many times, but it's the first time I noticed the guy pushing his boulder up the mountain.
