For 9 years, Dream Theater was my absolute favourite band and I thought they always would be. I never believed I would discover anything greater. Haken is my favourite because they beat my favourite.
It's very difficult for people, as they get older, to change their ways. As such, bands get "stuck" in a rut. You can see this in people's taste in music who are older (like me) who, after their early formative years, don't seem to change much (not like me). There are always exceptions to the rule but get past 30-40 years old and people will still be listening to the same stuff they were 20 years ago. I believe it is the same for making music. I'm constantly on the lookout for more interesting music (with a heavy bent). Rush used to be my fave band. Dream Theater took over. Now it's Opeth. Haken sounds really good and may end up being my favourite band but then, strangely, I like the sound of Sunn O))). Go figure. :-)
Must say I'm inclined to agree on all points. Opeth's been my fav band for years some years now, with Watershed as their best album so far. Must admit that Haken have some potential though. som parts are really cool. Only just "found them" and i'm a little delighted to find a new band that have this potential :)
This album has to be my favorite progressive rock/metal album ever, tied even with DT's Scenes From a Memory in my book. So musically diverse. Beautiful, yet epic. Makes great use of a lot of music theory that gets neglected in modern music, from the use of harmonic minors, to the use of cadences that only resolve rhythmically. The Mountain is a corner-stone in progressive music, and I deem it a staple album to any prog fans out there.
07:17 - 08:00 - prog metal heaven :) Have been a huge prog fan for 15 years now and haven't listened to Haken yet. I'm ashamed of myself. But this changed today :D

Melodically complex with the quirkiness originally introduced by King Crimson and later demonstrated by Spock's Beard and The Mars Volta. These gents are influenced by the best of Prog and Prog-Metal while presenting an extremely original sound. Overall, very exciting to hear some fresh prog ideas!

I stopped listening to music for a long time. The last band I remembered touching me was Dream Theater... Nothing after that. I didn't know it at the time, but I just couldn't find anything I could identify with. I didn't have those words yet. I was almost completely music free for at least 10 years. I just found this the other night. My mind has officially been blown. I've listened to this song like 20 times, and it's even more mesmerizing each time. Then I listened to Atlus Stone. These guys are the pure essence of what progressive is. Pure complexity. Easily in my top 5 favorite bands, now.
There's a big problem in the Post-1992 Prog Scene: Thinking that everything in the newest prog is derivated from DT music... as if Gentle Giant, Premiata Forneria Marconi, KC, Focus, VDGG and Mahavishnu Orchestra never existed.
The "Problem" is that Dream Theater was the First Prog Band MOST people born after 1983 EVER heard Images & Words was their First Prog Metal Album They never heard of Fates Warning, Queensryche, Sieges Even, Rush, So Dream Theater is their Non Plus Ultra Prog Metal Band
musicisthebestF Just because people have not heard anything else but DT does not make them the main influence for someone else. Imho Haken is more prog then metal (this song is somewhat of the most metal they go on The Mountain. DT is more metal and technical show off then prog and emotion. Even King Crimson and Gentle Giant have had their hard rock moments.
Nisse Hult I think the point was, simply, that Dream Theatre is viewed as the only point of reference for prog-metal fans born post-1983. For me, the first nearly progressive band I heard was Tool. I compared virtually everything I heard to them for years. Fortunately for me, I expanded my horizons and listened to something other than Tool. I started to listen to the bands members of Tool cited as influences, listen to similar bands as they, etc. That sort of intelligent musical appreciation is something I recommend to the dudes saying Haken is a foreigners' impression of DT.

Absolutely Amazing. I listened The Mountain several times and I've to say it is a MASTERPIECE!! Never heard about Haken but now they have all my atention for sure! Nice Melodies, heavy and tight rithms, great great great sound. Is a great idea to play 8 strings guitars but noy always ... Looooove IT!
I don't see how anyone finds this at all similar to SOAD other than the fact that both bands are Progressive Metal/Rock. Definitely one of the best Prog bands I've heard though, very unique and keeps your attention through the entire 10 mins of the song.
Cheers from Toronto fan .... since that , i've seen them on three other occasions , absolutely perfect . Opera House show was particularily fantastic .
The Mountain - best prog release of 2013, perhaps sharing that title with The Raven That Refused to Sing. We've been spoiled this year, progheads. If you don't already own this, do yourself a favor and spin it from beginning to end - it's brilliant (and this track I might even consider one of the weaker ones, minus the instrumental section).
***** The Theory of Everything is brilliant. I had never heard of Ayreon until a few months ago. I can't believe what I was missing! The Human Equation is incredible too.
First band in my prog/experimental collection that has 7 albums (don't tell me that "Restoration" is EP))... and EACH OF THEM are masterpiece! I kneel before you, Haken!!!
The Ocean - Pelagial is amazing. TesseracT's new album is really good as well. Have you heard of Guilt Machine? They only have one album (an Ayreon side project) but it's really good. You can find the whole album on UA-cam.
Been listening to this album for weeks straight. It's been a long time since an album stuck with me for so long. Prog album of the year IMO with the Flower Kings "Desolation Rose" the runner up!!
I like that this album they're much more focused on the vocals than the other albums. ALOT of othe prog-bands should follow this example! Not only supe-malmsteenshred and odd time measures
Omni Codex Thank you sir, to bring another amazing and very unique prog band in my life. I suggest you to listen to 'Bad Salad' as they are very unknown and very good prog as well ;)
i where at at a a Leprous concert in Denmark and haken came and watced the concert with me probaly the best concert i ever been at .. besides the same concert place played Haken last time been there.....
tomorrow the vinyl of it comes to me (hope so) ! haken,i know of u since the first demosongs of myspace, your music is amazing and u top it every new album
Did you see the definition of Pareidolia? I think the band just sat down and went: "Shit, everyone's gonna compare us to anything remotely prog for this one..." - "Well, we don't have a title for this yet, let's fuck with them."
3:44 - 4:42 I can't help but laugh at the imagine of a bearded dude with only pink pants on dejnting this part whilst only staring at you angrily, not moving besides playing the notes, never breaking eyecontact
I don't know if you've listened to their first two albums - they're simply out of this world. It seems like with each new album, they're getting better, enriching their music in thoughtful yet very original. Even if you hear elements of the above mentioned bands, it means nothing. You must hear their music as the complete album, then it starts to shine even more. Fascinating. Much more complex than Tools, much more dedication to the composition detail oriented than DT.
Okay, so we got haken, dream theater, darkwater?, vanden plas, seventh wonder?, subsignal and ayreon left for this year....my god we're in for a treat!
Guys been listening to all the prog greats for to many years to mention and been a musician for all of those years so i know a track when i hear one , and that is one special piece of music .. stunning work !
You guys do realize that Haken is influenced by DT? So why is there a need to bash one of them? So that you can feel more superior for being a Haken fan?
why can people be like me, enjoying Haken as much as i enjoy DT, who cares which is which and who is who? look out to the window, see the crap music all over the place? God, i hope a lot of band got "influenced" by DT and be progressive! "REMEMBER there's no the best drummer/band, there's only favorite" - MPortnoy.
I hear A Perfect Circle, influence in this particular number. Sounds great. I came across this, watching Devin Townsend. Great thing about Prog, is every artist, has a different approach to get monumental results. I will listen to more of Haken, I am right in their demographic. New fan as of this minute.
Before this, the only Haken song I knew was Cockroach King.

Got to love HAKEN, amazing all round... totally original!
Greatgreatgreat!! "Mountain" is another fantastic album of "Haken" and I fell in love with it immediately...
Dude the latest one 'The Mountain' one of the best albums ive ever heard in my life
I respect you guys so much, interacting with fans/other people and shit
When Dream and Tool Unite
I don't see how anyone finds this at all similar to SOAD other than the fact that both bands are Progressive Metal/Rock. Definitely one of the best Prog bands I've heard though, very unique and keeps your attention through the entire 10 mins of the song.
It's like dream theater with a good singer... i LOVE it! :)
Dream theater's singer is amazing, he has an amazing range in his voice and he's powerful.
IncestialBeing ur wrong
Haken was fricking amazing last night in Toronto ! Favorite prog band right now .
Cheers from Toronto fan .... since that , i've seen them on three other occasions , absolutely perfect . Opera House show was particularily fantastic .
I would have gone but I just heard of them. Pretty cool kinda Gentle Giant like
This right here Is the definition of a fantastic ensemble of music
The piece starting at 5:23 gives me goosebumps, so simple and so good. :)
Nothing is simple with prog bands
Simple?
The Mountain - best prog release of 2013, perhaps sharing that title with The Raven That Refused to Sing. We've been spoiled this year, progheads. If you don't already own this, do yourself a favor and spin it from beginning to end - it's brilliant (and this track I might even consider one of the weaker ones, minus the instrumental section).
Agree. But I think Steven Wilson's is THE MASTERPIECE: one of the best records I've heard in many many years.
Jose Fernando Vasco I'm absolutely agree.
***** The Theory of Everything is brilliant. I had never heard of Ayreon until a few months ago. I can't believe what I was missing! The Human Equation is incredible too.
***** Also... you just got me into Leprous. Thanks for the recommendation!
The Mountain is my album of 2013, absolutely love it.
First band in my prog/experimental collection that has 7 albums (don't tell me that "Restoration" is EP))...
and EACH OF THEM are masterpiece! I kneel before you, Haken!!!
I've listened to this album back to back more times than I can remember in these last 7 days. It's very, very well done.
Never has almost 11 minutes passed so fast!
I recently found their track In Memoriam on a sample CD of a local magazine. Since then I'm in love.
'The mountain' is just great!
Literally hearing this for the first time - wow. Lot of lost time to make up, this is awesome. Keep up the great prog effort!
Seconded. Someone posted Atlas Stone on r/progmetal and this was the recommended video after it ended. I may be hooked.
These ten minute plus minute music videos need to happen more often.
3:44 so much Dream Theater, holy shit. I love Haken, though.
Did DT use bouzouki as well?
@@meanangel8114 Maybe in Home from Scenes?
@@talaniel
They Used Sitar In Home...
As Jordan Played It On Keyboard...
Wooow!
The Ocean - Pelagial is amazing. TesseracT's new album is really good as well.
Have you heard of Guilt Machine? They only have one album (an Ayreon side project) but it's really good. You can find the whole album on UA-cam.
I am really hoping that Ross appears on an Ayreon album some day as a singer/lyricist :)
Been listening to this album for weeks straight. It's been a long time since an album stuck with me for so long. Prog album of the year IMO with the Flower Kings "Desolation Rose" the runner up!!
Same here! I've been listening this album like crazy. "Falling back to earth" jeez that song is crazy.
6:10 This is so beautiful ;(
What a revelation tonight
Between the buried and me -brought me here!
BOUZOUKIIIIIIIIII!!!!!
this solo reminds me "outcry" solo from Dream Theater
I like that this album they're much more focused on the vocals than the other albums. ALOT of othe prog-bands should follow this example! Not only supe-malmsteenshred and odd time measures
Its like dream theater with a good singer and without annoying keyboard sounds, love it
One of the best Prog rock songs ........ever
Everyone should check out Native Construct if they haven't already.
You're welcome.
Omni Codex Seconded
Omni Codex Thank you sir, to bring another amazing and very unique prog band in my life. I suggest you to listen to 'Bad Salad' as they are very unknown and very good prog as well ;)
Twilight_Force Addicted I'll check them out. Thnx!
#SharingIsCaring

Blown away. Now a fan. WOW!
3:30 - 4:40 = A change of pants.
may be the BEST ROCK song of decade......so hopeful !!!
Straight in my face... what is the name of the ethnic stringed instrument in the middel of the song by the way?
+ATastic Godless greek bouzouki
NuMeditationMusic : thnx
Vocals sound like Riverside. Awesome.
Loving all of their songs. I just found out about them today and am beyond happy.
Does anyone else find the chorus for this song an incredibly effective earworm?
tomorrow the vinyl of it comes to me (hope so) ! haken,i know of u since the first demosongs of myspace, your music is amazing and u top it every new album
didnt know what pareidolia was - got pleasantly surprised from google images
It is a song from a band to which every listener finds patterns from other bands where they dont exist.
Did you see the definition of Pareidolia? I think the band just sat down and went: "Shit, everyone's gonna compare us to anything remotely prog for this one..." - "Well, we don't have a title for this yet, let's fuck with them."
Don't forget the homage to Alien at the end of the video to top it all off.
Best progessive metal song ever !!!!
Benchmark for 1.000 bands.
Lol it's the intro to Alien at the end.
Sooo... The outro?
metabog We got a sherlock holmes here
So my name has spread, good work my dear watson, publicity is the present day brothels! :D
Ridley Crillos ;-)
3:44 - 4:42 I can't help but laugh at the imagine of a bearded dude with only pink pants on dejnting this part whilst only staring at you angrily, not moving besides playing the notes, never breaking eyecontact
this song is a miracle.
3:44 Fuck!
Is that a Boozooki?
A bazooka?
Haken has become my favorite band this year, awesome progressive metal band, amazing sounds, love the dark atmosphere.
Epic mandoline!
+Joep van den Nieuwenhuizen (MuziekJoep) greek bouzouki actually :)
+Yvan Cluet oh okay. Bazooka it is!
Joep van den Nieuwenhuizen exactly !
+Yvan Cluet ouzo is nice tho
Okay, so we got haken, dream theater, darkwater?, vanden plas, seventh wonder?, subsignal and ayreon left for this year....my god we're in for a treat!
T H I S I S M Y J A M
Guys been listening to all the prog greats for to many years to mention and been a musician for all of those years so i know a track when i hear one , and that is one special piece of music .. stunning work !
You guys do realize that Haken is influenced by DT? So why is there a need to bash one of them? So that you can feel more superior for being a Haken fan?
Nice... i was in the Luna Park concert.. i'm waiting so badly this DVD, maybe i can be there in some section of it. Greets from Argentina !
When DT and Tool married....
+Alvi Achdiyat Is there oriental instruments in DT or Tool 's musics ?
+MakiKata Check out Right in Two by Tool. It has a tabla solo!
+MakiKata Dream Theater - Home. Similar bass line to Tool's 46 & 2.
Tool didn't invent the bouzouki and the 5/8 rhythm. These are Greek influences. The title should've tipped you off.
What an amazing discovery. Progressive Metal at its best!
why can people be like me, enjoying Haken as much as i enjoy DT, who cares which is which and who is who? look out to the window, see the crap music all over the place? God, i hope a lot of band got "influenced" by DT and be progressive! "REMEMBER there's no the best drummer/band, there's only favorite" - MPortnoy.
I hear A Perfect Circle, influence in this particular number. Sounds great. I came across this, watching Devin Townsend. Great thing about Prog, is every artist, has a different approach to get monumental results. I will listen to more of Haken, I am right in their demographic. New fan as of this minute.
Dat electric fan though
