It felt like watching an animated movie live, and hearing the theatre roar of laughter too was electric.
I loved it and found it deeply moving (slightly concerned by the amount of people saying how light hearted this musical is when it deals with LGBT shame/bullying, grief/bereavement and anxious/avoidant attachment theory). But the sheer amount of jokes and dialogue that required an appreciation of Friends and a lot of other musicals really alienated a lot of the other people I went with from engaging in the material. I was having to give my partner who's Hungarian an overview of Oliver the musical in the interval, as that musical/book is just not a cultural thing there.
I didn't like friends and I haven't seen Oliver. The west end live songs were dreadful. Maybe I should miss it. I hope it's successful, if I see another unapologetically offensive classic musical I will lose it.
@@emhu2594 I haven’t seen the King and I, or Guys and Dolls - but as far as the others go, aren’t dated attitudes to be expected and just part of the context of the work? To take Hello Dolly as an example. I totally agree with the person you had dinner with about the connection of this show to "Company". That person must be sooooooo smart!!!!🤣 And so old...to know so much about a 1970 Sondheim show. 🙃 As usual, your review is spot on...thank you so much...
tiny correction- Six was written at University of Cambridge, not Oxford. I was there and saw it at a tiny Cambridge theatre in 2017 before it went to Fringe!
Finally got to see this this weekend, so came back to watch this! I wasn't sure what I was going to think of this. I watched your video about the closing before seeing it, and totally agree that the marketing didn't necessarily show what kind of show it was because even with tickets booked I was expecting two people on a sofa and it's so much more than that!! I honestly really loved it. Completely agree great cast, and Disco Ball is so well done. I think I felt a bit more positive than you but you're probably not wrong considering the closure etc in terms of what an average audience might feel. The one thing I significantly disagree with is the jumper song (Lost) near the end, I had to hold back from full on bawling during that one. Perhaps because I wasn't really expecting that discussion of grief for most of the show, and it was so raw and upfront and just open about grief in a way I feel like we don't often see. So I'd hate to see that song cut.
Saw this in the evening as part of a two show day last weekend. It was the perfect palette cleanser and refresh after seeing Next To Normal for the matinee! Both amazing shows in their own rights
I saw the show last weekend and had an absolute blast. I’m a big fan of Jo Foster after seeing them in & Juliet and initially bought my ticket solely based on their casting! Disco Ball now lives rent free in my head, haha. I definitely agree with all of your critical points though. I really enjoyed the show, but at times, felt it seemed like a work in progress and could use some editing (note: I saw a preview performance). As catchy as the bee song was (and relatable), it seemed really jarring to me. The person sitting next to me looked at me during the interval and we shared a look of “what on earth was that?” Loved your review as always!
I agree with a fair amount of what you said, though I think I came out liking it a little less than you did! It definitely felt like it skipped a stage of editing and polishing that would have happened in a pre-West End run, bringing it in cold def feels like a mistake as I don't think we got the best version of this material. Honestly felt it should have been a one act as the plot is too thin to sustain two and means we end up going round in circles to pad the time. A lot of the dialogue was very cringey and felt like it was trying too hard. There's also a fair few songs I would have done without as I didn't feel they added much (the bee song and the I got off the plane song spring to mind). I really wanted to love this cause I loved Six and the cast and performances here were incredible-but it just doesn't feel ready for the West End and I wish it'd had the opportunity to develop more cause there is a great version of the show in there, it's just not the one they landed on (for me anyway).
I also caught the previous workshop version, and was surprised by how much of the West End version feels like a step down from that. They could definitely stand to make cuts, the most pressing and critical of which is the finale fakeout, which needs to go *immediately* - I don’t think the show would outstay its welcome quite so much if it didn’t literally TELL the audience it is wrapping up so long before it does.
I can see this being an extremely marmite musical. I jived with it and have had "interlude in B minor" stuck in my head for weeks - I can't wait for the soundtrack! But if you don't get on with the humour or the pop vibe isn't your jam, it will just come across as self indulgent or try-hard.
I’m so proud of myself, I made the connection to Company in the comments of your video about the launch! I hope the show comes to the states so that I can see it.
I bought these tickets when they were being marketed as the new musical by the writers of Six. No title and no idea what it was going to be about. Agree with lots that you have mentioned with the marketing and the flow of the show. I think it would have done better with a smaller run to iron some of the issues before coming to the West End.
I absolutely loved this show. Leesa is absolutely incredible and her and Jordan (Jo was on a night off) had such an amazing connection that I was absolutely hooked. There was a stage stop due to Leesa hitting the champagne bottle too hard and the confetti going absolutely everywhere but the way she handled it and the person that was the bin that came out cleaning it fully in character was hilarious and absolutely made the night
Saw it tonight. For me it's the most exciting new musical i've seen in a while. It's fun, actually funny. And the music is as beautiful as it is catchy.
I see people in the comments talking about a song in the show that is called Interlude in B Minor, and for the love of all that is sacred I hope it's not the one about the bee, for the simple reason that if it's about a BEE entering a FLAT, B FLAT (as in, the key of Bb) was RIGHT THERE.
I LOVED it. Of the roughly 30 West End, touring, and Broadway shows I’ve seen (which I’m aware is not a lot for some), this makes it to Number 5 on my list. I haven’t seen ‘Six’ as I’m not usually a fan of minimalistic stage production, and the music doesn’t seem to be particularly to my taste from what I’ve heard (ergo, the show is probably not for me), so I’m not coming at this from a comparative perspective (at least not to ‘Six’). But I can say I found ‘Why Am I So Single?’ to be hugely relatable (to its intended audience of LGBT people and women in their 30s or under; I can imagine older people not being as captured by it but it’s okay to write for a specific audience), and, in fact, there were certain truths that I had never heard articulated as well as they were there, if at all. I found myself laughing and grinning throughout, due to, both, the script and performances, and I think it’s funny in a way that feels very natural. And, though the sets themselves are fairly minimal, I loved the way it utilised its ensemble cast as the set. Also, I’m no expert, but I have never watched a show and thought about how much work the dancers are putting in to their routines. Maybe it comes from the writers’ background in a more concert style of musical, but regardless, I was in awe. Lastly, it is rare that I am so taken by a soundtrack in its entirety. Usually, there are a couple of songs you’ll think about afterwards, but I enjoyed every number. I do agree it would have been good to see Faye Ginn again before the finale, especially considering the show sets up that return in their first appearance. I didn’t forget that the characters were meant to be writing a musical, but I think that reminder would have given the initial premise a stronger sense of throughline. My only real gripe though is that I would have liked more of a pin to be put in the point that “men are trash” is just a superficial, online hashtag, and isn’t actually true. Because that is how I feel towards that mentality - as cathartic as it may seem to resolve your feelings with a basic generalisation, and as wonderful as it is that we feel able to criticise men in a way that we didn’t 20 years ago, that sentiment is obviously not true, and the flaws of publicising such ideas should be evident at this point (by the ongoing increase in men feeling isolated, and the way this is used to radicalise some people). So I am glad the show followed that musical number up with a line to contradict it, but it was so momentary and casual that I imagine most audiences left the theatre remembering “men are trash” as the point.

Its a definite winner for me and I've told all my friends to go see it, we're the exact right age for all the in jokes and references and the perils of online dating. I saw this show the week it opened during previews and i thought it was fantastic but needed slight editing. I felt some of the songs went on a bit too long and it sometimes felt like they were repeating or re-treading a lot of material, i had wondered how the jump from a one act show to a 2 act one would go for them and I do think the show needs some edits and cuts but overall its a very fun time. The leads are fantastic and there are some standout musical moments, the writers know how to write a catchy song so im excited for the cast album to be released, definitely go see it if you can!
I really enjoyed it. It was funny, fancy and out there. The bee song was so random 😅 enjoyable but so out of place. Not sure whether I'd prefer A different act 1 finale... Definitely want to see it again towards the end of the year to see what changes they made. I do have to disagree on the marketing. I think they've done brilliantly. Everyone was talking about it for months! before it opened. The targeted ads on Instagram didn't hurt and with their amazing performance at West End Live? I genuinely believe they'll have no problem getting people in to see the show. They need to be recognised at the Olivier Awards ❤️❤️
Sounds like my kind of show. I do not understand the bee thing. I feel like we love bees now...but I dunno. Is having a bee in the flat good? Bad? Weird? It just doesn't invoke a single reaction from me, personally, and I have no clue how others would react.
I saw it in previews and really enjoyed it however want to go back in a few months in the hope that feedback has been taken on board and it’s been tightened up. I love all these performers, huge fan of Leesa and Rhys and can see this going far if they take audience feedback on board. There are some things I couldn’t appreciate for example the friends references as I’ve never seen an exposed of friends (I know, kill me now!) and I’m still baffled at the bee song 😂 but overall I feel this could do well.
Also, to be honest, why Friends? Whilst it is a pop culture juggonaught it's also, these days, used as comfort streaming and I'd actually argue as a result, has become even more niche and is even less appealing to me with the only exception being the banger of a theme tune. Oliver, I get, and I think that's awesome they've leant into that. Friends, meh, to the highest degree.
LOVED this show and I'm in my 50s, so think it works well to have universal themes that would be relevant to everyone. My only slight criticism would be that the second half of Act 2 just got slower and slower and needed something to boost it to the end. The cast were AMAZING and loved the originality about the show. Disco Ball was on another level and loved the Bee song ending Act 1. When I saw it the Bee was a bit too enthusiastic and ended up shooting off the stage into the audience. But both bee and audience members were fine. I would definitely recommend this show to anyone looking for a fresh new exciting musical. I cannot wait for the soundtrack to be released.
The material is SO strong is the thing - the songs are some of the best I've heard in years, and it's still a great time at the theatre with a terrific cast, I'm coming down quite hard on it because it could (and should) have been even better.

As "Friends" and theatre fans, we enjoyed the references throughout. We think it could be edited further, especially the 2nd Act to make of flow a bit better. Perhaps a song or two cut or shortened to stop it from being slightly too long... Overall, an enjoyable show and definitely worth watching, but could be better with tweaks..... We agreed 7.5 out of 10
I'm not really drawn to this musical. I'm not from the UK and I personally don't think I'll invest travel and accommodation costs for it. The first song they released I'm not really a fan of and although I like the second one and adore Leesa's voice it just doesn't really excite me enough. Hope that with some changes it still becomes a success!
I was waiting for this video. I have yet to find the right person to go to see this show with but at this point I’m tempted to just say fuck it and go on my own 😂 This show is right up my alley haha
Go on your own - I went with my partner but we genuinely spent it talking to everyone around us it was such a good atmosphere before the show, during the show stop and the break.
I didnt enjoy this one sadly. The plot wasnt plotting. It felt longer than it was because nothing happens, it was trying almost too hard to be funny and while there was intelligent comedy and brilliant references in places, i maybe had my hopes a little high after the fantastic concept and clever writing in SIX. Also felt it relied too heavily on friends, possibly trying to gain brownie points with a millennial audience. That being said it covered important themes, ft representative cast, and Disco Ball almost had me in tears…quite All U Wanna Do coded???- so it did hit in this way. But largely underwhelmed and i was SO looking forward to it as a certified Marlow & Moss stan.
To answer its question with another - “Why are young people so self-pitying and self-indulgent?” It calls itself “a big fancy musical”, but I can’t fancy it much, nor even any of the cast. And I doubt it will be as big as Six.
Wanted to leave at interval, though it would get better it didn't, yhe songs meat market there's a bee were terrible 😕 really poor show so disappointed, avoid at all costs
@@MickeyJoTheatre some people can't handle anything resembling criticism of things they like. Honestly I wonder why they even watch reviews of it's going to upset them.

The first song they released I'm not really a fan of and although I like the second one and adore Leesa's voice it just doesn't really excite me enough. Hope that with some changes it still becomes a success!
I was waiting for this video. I have yet to find the right person to go to see this show with but at this point I’m tempted to just say fuck it and go on my own 😂
This show is right up my alley haha
While it’s still theatre week, at least on TodayTix, I’d just say screw it and go haha, it’s such a good time.
@@pkminpkmonthe temptation is very real 😂
I went solo last weekend and had a blast! You should go on your own - you’ll have a great time! 😊
Yeah, solo theatre watching is very fun too.
Wasn't it bad ,the songs like meat market were so bad ,and I never seen friends why did they keep going on about it 😮
Greetings Mickey.....and last video for that " hat " .
Is this basically Gimme Gimme Gimme the musical? hehe
From what I’ve seen of it so far I’m not fan, that “8 Dates” song I absolutely hate, and clips I’ve seen I just didn’t resonate with at all.
To answer its question with another - “Why are young people so self-pitying and self-indulgent?” It calls itself “a big fancy musical”, but I can’t fancy it much, nor even any of the cast. And I doubt it will be as big as Six.
@@mikerichardson1695 none of the cast? Wow.
Wanted to leave at interval, though it would get better it didn't, yhe songs meat market there's a bee were terrible 😕 really poor show so disappointed, avoid at all costs
It’s not a critic’s job to re-write a show.
Its a writers job to write a good show, so here we are.
Did I do that?
@@MickeyJoTheatre some people can't handle anything resembling criticism of things they like. Honestly I wonder why they even watch reviews of it's going to upset them.
SIX was awful. Just awful. Let’s be real.
@@Sanchordia it's a hugely popular global hit?! 😅
Wouldnt say it’s awful, but definitely don’t think it’s as great as the hype and mania surrounding it would suggest. I thought it was mid, fun show but a bit cringe, at times just painfully gen z.
Oh! So edgy!
Six is great fun ,this is terrible
I like Six. The recent sister act musical panto was awful. The lion king was awful.
