I guess you're leaving in a hot place or too humid.
Anyway, first of all the cake toppers needs to be kept away from sunlight and damp (regarding the humidity you might need to use some desiccant silica gel). This is something that I have been tried and it works really well with me. They normally last a couple of years.
I know that some people use hair lacquer, sprays used on acrylic paintings or PME clear glaze, but I have never tried myself.
However, they never have to be stored in the fridge or in an airtight container.
