Unfortunately, things are not looking good on the Panasonic Lumix S5 Mark II, ESPECIALLY Autofocus.

I recommend reading the instructions and learning the focus priority... page 165 and further in the manual

For autofocus, go into the menu and make sure you have the Eye Detection AF turned on. In the menu, go to Gear, and then AF.

I have the s5IIX and the 35mm 1.8 and I've never had your problem... you have to learn to respect the distance and especially to know your camera to have a good auto focus. I even made a video with it and sincerely, under these conditions, I don't see any difference with my a7 IV

I’ve been using the S5II for 6 months, no issues with autofocus, without you posting/sharing your settings there’s not much anyone can do to help.

I also returned my Lumix S5II and got a full refund. Your concerns are valid and genuine. A number of Fan Boys will criticize your view. I think Fan Boys are more concerned about what is popular instead of what a camera does not do. You made a good video exploring your experience and choices.

If you can’t blur the background with a 50/1.8, you have to be doing something wrong. Your aperture might be closing automatically to preserve exposure. Try shooting in all-manual or even aperture priority.

Followed this channel for ages and you always seem to review tech I'm interested in and absolutely butcher them in a review. Don't ever stop. Your videos are hilarious.

When you first started I thought you were punking us 😅
So many things you are doing wrong man 😂 Bro, I don’t even know where to start.
I shoot Luxury Weddings and have 4 - S5 II all native LUMIX L Lens 😂 rivaling my Sony FX3.
I get it, you don’t like Panasonic..
Because saying you can’t get bokeh with an F1.8 is so unbelievable without thinking User Error 😂
For You, this is definitely not for Point and Shoot minded people, more for Videographers and Cinematographers.
Don’t ever say you can’t get background blur with a 1.8 lens 😅Just stay with what you like.

I think you might be at about the minimum focusing distance for the 35mm

    Wtf man!! 😅😅😅
I can't say if it is a real thing or a weird skecth!
About the AF: it depends on the framerate. I don't remember now but 50fps and over uses contrast detection and below that uses phase detection. Or something like that
